Up there with the best of his recorded output. Criminally under-rated album. DiScuss.
Can't say enough good things about it.
It's a modern classic.
nothing comes close to Heartbreaker.
his worst record
but an album of am radio US rock was never going to go down well with the critics/knobheads.
Gold > Rock 'N Roll
Sure it's no masterpiece but it's great fun. I prefer the version of Anybody Wanna Take Me Home on RnR than LIH.
While we're talking about underrated Ryan Adams records, I really don't get why so few folks seemed to like III/IV. Some awesome stuff on there.
I like RA playful.
Agreed? I can't get into the second disc at all.
and I have a soft spot for both Numbers, and that other pop-punky one later on.
Which one is Gracie on? Love that one.
or 'IV' if you will. 1st disc is really good bust 2nd one is just ace from start to end. Death & Rats is bloody lovely. And Icebreaker makes me smile like a massive idiot.
That makes it better
Record company hated Love is Hell and told Mr Adams that it was too dark to sell, so he was told to go back to the drawing board. So he pissed out R&R in about 10 days, slung it back to the label bosses, who thought yea, much better. R&R was then released to not much acclaim, and didn’t sell all that well either. Love is Hell was then released afterwards (firstly as two EP's) and was pretty much critically adored, and I think probably sold more copies to boot. Shows what the label bosses know.
but then again, another story goes that when Lost Highway (which is a pretty straight up country label) signed Adams they expected him to make another LP similar to Heartbreaker, but he went and made Gold instead.
I like stories.
I daren't say the 2nd best because I can understand why people don't like it.
For example, Burning Photographs is almost perfect to me. I love every single note of it. But when he goes "chk-ah!", I can get why some people cringe at it despite the fact it arouses me.
First Ryan Adams song I ever heard: Luminol. 10/10
I do skip 1974, Anybody Wanna Take Me Home (LIH version is so much better) and Miss America like but still, 10/10.
Anybody Want to take me home is my favourite RA song, if not my all time favourite song. What is this LiH version you are all talking of?
It has a longer intro and is generally superior to the RNR version. I can't remember if it fades out then back in again like it does on RNR though.
as opposed to the pt1 and pt2 release? I did not know that.
It's not even tacked on at the end as a bonus track or anything - it comes right after 'This House...', just before the title track.
and then the edited version was put on Rock n Roll.
The production on it is perfect. Drenched in reverb, sounds much less clean and more Smiths-like.
...and fill me full of joy. I thought I was alone. Thank you, brother and sisters. Chk-ah!
That album is a masterpiece.
