Song of the day: MOGWAI - 'Rano Pano' (song of the year 22/25)

AdamB [Edit] [Delete] 22 replies 08:41, 10 July '11

“One riff spun out for five minutes in true Mogwai style, but it’s developed in such a precise, well-judged manner, it doesn’t need anything more. Those fuzzed-up guitar tones are also quite, quite wonderful.”

By Michael Brown

  • it's an ok song off a decent(ish) Mogwai album

no higher than 6.5/10 I'm afraid.

  • A resounding 10 from me

I don't just like it, I like it a lot.

  • this song 9/10

off of one of the contenders for album of the year.

I would point towards the previous track 'Mexican Grand Prix' as the true 10/10 moment on the album though.

    • This,

MGP, and San Pedro all absolutely blinding, as good as anthing they have done. The rest of the album pretty average.

      • Boy, do I love San Pedro

I can listen to that alone on repeat and never get tired of it.

  • Best Mogwai song, probably. Let's say 9/10.

Really like the new album too. It has less boring parts than most of the others.

  • Epic, irresistible stuff.

  • 9/10 - really love this track.

was the opening track on our Q1 best of podcast http://drownedinsound.com/news/4142358-dis-radio-returns-q1-2011-report-by-sean-adams-amp-mike-diver

we'll be doing the q2 show soon (hopefully this week)

  • Bump for non-weekenders

I'll always love Mogwai, but this leaves me a bit cold - feels like they're going over old territory. I imagine it'd be amazing live though.
    6/10

    • This pretty much sums up how I feel about it

When I heard the mp3 of it they released ahead of the album I had no high hopes for the album at all. Pretty forgettable, sounded like they were on autopilot. One of the weaker tracks on the album.

  • the new album is their best in years

but, that sadly, is saying very little. still, one of the best things they've ever been involved in was that Zidane album/film so that might colour my opinions.

    justanothersheeldz | 11 Jul '11, 16:02 | X
  • love it

the track didn't grab me on first listen but it had enough in it that begged at least one more play. From then the whole track unravels into a glorious piece.

When the guitars come crashing back in something moves in my heart. I wish I knew enough about music to know how that shift happens, but damn, if that isn't one of my favourite moments in music this year..

  • it's a 9 or a 10

    and it's phenomenal live too.

  • 8/10

    whole album 7.5/10.

  • 8/10

totally solid, and those guitars do sound incredible.

Preferred The Sun Smells Too Loud though

  • 9

    10 live

    GrandMoffTarkin | 16 Jul '11, 14:33 | X
  • good song

not the best on the album though. As with others I think that credit goes to Mexican Grand Prix. Really looking forward to hearing the new stuff live next Friday in Bexhill (of all places).

    weeber | 17 Jul '11, 09:03 | X
  • its good

mexican grand prix is the only mogwai song i can think of that i definitely dislike though. Werewolf and San Pedro are the picks off Hardcore... for me

    Christophales | 17 Jul '11, 10:16 | X
  • Awesome tune!

Im gunna give it 10/10 purely for the guitar tones ha
