still listen to the album quite often, and they played at some of the first ever gigs i went to and were incredible :-(
She can't have been that old. I always liked them and saw them at leeds festival 2000.
Can't think of any bands getting touted by the music press nowadays that sound as exciting as they did back in 199whenever and I was 17.
Gonna pop it on the iPod for a full spin tomorrow. Big shame.
if anyone has mp3s of any of the early bsides i'd like them actually - i only seem to still have physical copies of the album and Resurrexit single
That blog post is pretty sorrowful.
I played the shit out of Nature Creates Freaks* for a good while after it came out. It's always a good go to when putting a mixtape together, and only within the last week I listed it/Cay as a choice in that 'Fantasy Don't Look Back Line-up' thread (not being lucky enough to ever catch them live at the time).
spotify has the album AND the princes and princesses single with bsides
There's a dearth of any actual video on YouTube, but here's a fairly standout clip of them live @ Exeter Cavern from 1999.
According to http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/1878779#r2723155 "Cay closed the show every night except in Exeter where they let Muse headline as it was their nearest to a hometown gig".
at portsmouth wedgewood rooms. great night. I think Crashland were meant to be third on the bill but pulled out for some lame reason.
I thought Cay were great and couldn't stand Muse - opinions which haven't changed in the years since.
And this has happened after a decade of inactivity.
Whereas Muse are now multimillionaire "rockstars" with A-list actresses for girlfriends and regularly sell out stadiums/headline major festivals.
Not that I wish death on Matt Bellamy.
A friend of mine went to it, for Cay, and left after two Muse songs, although he loves Muse now.
Only ever saw them once, at the end of 1999, headlining The Garage. Crashland and Seafood supported them that night, plus a cameo appearance by Rothko. Just found a review: www.skippyscage.com/reviews99/091299.html
I used to read that all the time.
From that blogpost, sounds like it might have been a long hard road to the end too. Sounds horrible.
They will forever live on in the background of the Spaced episode where Tim & Daisy go to the pub. They're on a poster behind Dwayne Benzie's head playing the Barfly the same week as Muse and Coldplay.
very sad, saw them supporting in Feeder in '99. R.I.P.
Saw them many times in the 90's, great band. I think I have physical copies of most of their singles including the limited Organ series disc. Will rip and post them up in the next few days for those wanting to hear the often hard to find b-sides.
Saw them a few times, including Reading 2000 when they had the tiniest banner in the world. Once at the Barfly too. Were always great.
I saw them supporting Feeder in Cambridge (October 1999?) and thought they were brilliant. Think I've got everything they ever released as well, even Resurrexit somewhere.
Will stick Nature Creates Freaks on when I get home.
I saw them supporting Idlewild at Exeter Lemon Grove, they were really good. I think I saw them play at Reading as well sometime around 1999/2000.
Here is a collection of singles and b-sides from the band Cay. If you enjoy these be sure to buy the album Nature Creates Freaks.
1. Better Than Myself
2. Hooked On That (Early Version)
3. Princes & Princesses (Early Version)
4. Seven Schizo's Sat On A Bench
5. Neurons Like Brandy
6. Ashley's Diary
8. Princes & Princesses
10. Cool As You
11. Nature Creates Freaks
12. Radar-Eared Rat Psychosis
13. Skool (Live At Steve Lamacq's Evening Session)
15. Cheap Talk
16. Elastic Ocean
Tracks 1-4 taken from the Better Than Myself EP (ORG-AN-ISED Single ORG048CD - Limited to 1000)
Tracks 5-7 taken from the Neurons Like Brandy single
Tracks 8-10 taken from the Princes & Princesses single
Tracks 11-13 taken from the Nature Creates Freaks single
Tracks 14-16 taken from the Resurrexit single
The early versions of Princes & Princesses and Hooked On That (with a totally different chorus) are particularly interesting. Much rougher than the polished album versions.
I had no idea anyone still cared about Cay. For those who are interested I've uploaded an early live gig and radio session from our pre record deal days.
cheers. and thanks for the great shows and records.
Enjoying both live sets that you've posted up :)
Still love that album and caught them live twice at Reading festival. Heartwarming to see there's still plenty of affection for them here :)
Apparently she got hit by a bus http://sinkofswirlingstars.blogspot.com/2011/06/anet-mook-2011.html
Crumbs. She'd probably had enough.
