There I said it.
but it's also nowhere near their best
(clearly clouds taste metallic)
but i will add i think Embryonic, whilst nit quite what i was expecting, and i found it to be hard work at first...is actually "up there" as one of their best.
confirms it's not the travesty I remember. But not the best you berk.
"for the first time in more than 15 years they've made an album that is difficult to consider great, regardless of how it's approached."
It was only really a disappointment for a band who set themselves such high standards, and luckily Embryonic was one helluva comeback.
But I have a hunch that it's not AS great as other FL albums. It's a victim of back-catalogue comparisons.
I am indeed going and I am rather excited.
if the mastering wasn't so fucking terrible, ear bleeding is very much imminent whenever I put this on
but listen to Soft Bulletin next to one of your 'regular' CDs. Not the first time they pulled that trick sadly.
...let down by the production. Clouds Taste Metallic is probably their best, and it's no coincidence that it's probably their last album to not be given a full studio treatment. Until Embryonic that is; good return to form...
The songwriting is so damn perfect, the world just wasn't ready.
At War With The Mystics isn't bad at all though, it's much, much better than Yoshimi. As a major Lips fan with all their albums Yoshimi was a crushing disappointment when it came out, especially since Do You Realize? was so good.
...Mystics' only problem was that it was their 3rd go at the Soft Bulletin formula (4th if you count Zaireeka) and their sound badly needed an overhaul.
but At War with the Mystics has plenty of great stuff, but yeah it doesn't quite hang together...
Oddly Embryonic by deliberately being a big mess almost works better today (but never really try listening through in entirity heh) than the unintentional mess of Mystics.
Clouds taste Metallic is good, but never grabbed me all that much.
is definitely Clouds Taste Metallic. The first Lips album i bought, not sure it will ever be bettered in my opinion. Almost perfect. At War With The Mystics was unfairly maligned, had some really great songs, just felt slightly like a retread of Yoshimi, even if it improves on the sound like some have suggested. Still one of the best most original bands making music today.
and just thought it couldn't really compare to Transmissions From The Satellite Heart. But I've just put it on and it is actually really really great.
Any particular reason why you think Mystics is better than Clouds, Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi, Embryonic, et al?
It's a good album (with a few of their best songs, WAND is a beast in concert) but it's not in my Top 3. (or likely anybody's)
it was the first one I bought by them and I just realise every now and then that's really the one I enjoy the most from start to finish.
The Soft Bulletin is great but when I'm not in the right mood it can feel a bit cold and too piano-y. Yoshimi is great but loses momentum a bit, there are 2 or 3 tracks that don't really do much. Embryonic is great but after a great opening the first half goes very flat, until the second half brings it back to awesomeness. Clounds I've not really listened to enough to be honest, when I have it's sounded great but started to feel a bit samey near the end without many individual tracks jumping out at me. All their albums took a while to grow on me though so we'll see where that goes. Transmissions is great and I often cite it as my favourite but I've realised I sorta need to be in the right 90s-slacker-indie-rock mood for that too. I've not listened to any of the others. Mystics I've realised is my go-to Flaming Lips album and is the sound I really associate with them in my head. And it makes me nostalgic for the period of time when I bought it and listened to it loads. And I enjoy the weaker tracks more than I enjoy the weaker tracks on the other albums. I REALLY LOVE IT.
can't believe people still listen to this band
The Soft Bulletin is the best album by absolutely miles.
You can then work your way backwards for five albums for the next best five (which are all great too), then its up to you.
Is quite cringe inducing though, isn't it?
Sounds quite fresh to me. But, at the same time I can understand someone hating it
Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung was one of the highlights in fact.
'Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung' is maybe my favourite song of theirs, not my favourite album though. But I find all of their albums a little patchy to be honest, if always enjoyable. Live though they can rarely be beat (unless they spend more time calling the audience 'motherfuckers' than playing songs, see the set at Primavera last week)
They didn't even fit in Race For The Prize. :(
And yeah you're right about all the albums being slightly patchy. I think Mystics is the one I find least patchy and that's why I enjoy it most.
it was the best album of the year it came out as well.
Still not my favourite though.
