Wow. I can always depend on DiS threads to have a modicum of good taste.
There's always an exception to the rule.
I'll add the Wrens' Built in Girls to help balance the scales. Seriously, I'd rather have bedbugs crawling in my ears than listen to these songs. *exit thread*
i'm sure that, like many other people on here, i used to listen to nearly nothing other than pop punk and nu metal. therefore i actually know more pop punk songs than i do songs from any other genre. picking a favourite pop punk song is a painfully difficult question.
therefore i'm not going to answer, i'm going to ask another question... what's the best cover of a pop punk song ? i say this, i listened to this several times a day last year http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDZxZzNk848
oooh here are the revillos....not exactly the 'best' pop punk, but a template for future pop punk girl voice copies (unless someone knows of an earlier one)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lLNL51NAoc
you may think that this lot are more manufactured....but are they really less punk than green day (who I do like)? Green Day are a reliable corporate stock market business proposition, after all.....far more reliable to 'invest in' than one of malcolm maclaren's influenced bands.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPjfD8ulnpw
who are....a bit wild and crazy? but also too sensitive to be metalhedz?
I love this video sooooooo much, the contrast between wholesome cleancut looking american teens (in clean black tees) idolising 4 armenian satan lookalikes :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSvFpBOe8eY (SOAD - chop suey)
can this be called pop punk? or is it limited to greenday/blink 182/sum41 sort of thing?
but I actually prefer Scott's drumming a lot of the time, Travis is undoubtedly a better more versitile drummer (eventually) but I'm just a sucker for the d-beat
1. Alkaline Trio - Armageddon (first time I got dumped I listened to this like a hundred times in a row)
2. Blink 182 - Dammit (a genre benchmark)
3. American Hi-Fi - Flavour of the Weak (best chorus ever?)
4. New Found Glory - My Friend's Over You (so so so amazing)
5. Brand New - Okay, I Believe You (when it drops OH GOOD LORD when it drops)
6. The Offspring - Staring at the Sun (best song ever for speeding down the motorway too)
7. The Get Up Kids - Don't Hate Me (this whole list could just be GUK songs)
8. Reel Big Fish - Beer ( I love it, the last chrous is so good)
9. The Descendents - Hope (the template for the whole genre)
10. Piebald - American Hearts (because HEY! YOU'RE PART OF IT!)
Did anyone else go to the 'Movielife' show with Vinnie at The Peel a couple of years back when Gabe turned up and played Become What You Hate? I met them both at New Slang after and did a shot with Gabe, he gave me a huge hug as well. My 15-year-old self would've probably died if that'd happened at the time.
the starting line - the best of me
allister - somewhere on fullerton
fenix tx - threesome
midtown - become what you hate
new found glory - dressed to kill/my friends over you
the movielife - walking on glass
i always thought boxcar were a bit of an underrated side project, i remember my friends at school being a bit 'meh' over the album when it came out but i was spinning it for weeks.
are busted too camp/boy bandy for pop punk fans? i was never really sure because although there was a lot of contrived boy band gimmicky stuff about them, the songs were basically polished versions of blink, etc. if you ignore the awful ballads they did. anyway, i don't mind admitting that i like air hostess, and i really like charlie (watch the busted documentary on youtube, it's wonderful)
maybe better categorized as ska, but it's definitely in the 90s american ska/punk tradition. in terms of breakneck, joyous singalongability, it's pretty fucking difficult to beat this.
My little brother is a huge Blink fan so I took him to see them a couple of times - they were always fun live and those two albums are great but in general I just never got into them in the same way I got into bands like NFG for example.
Y'know I hate to fly but i feel much better occupied my mind writing you a love letter, I messed my pants when we flew over france, Will I see you soon in my hotel room for a holiday romance?
Air hostess.
But other than that I always fucking loved Alkaline Trio.
Dammit though DiS, reading through this thread has got my nostalgia going pretty severely. Haven't listened to Millencollin or Saves The Day (or Get Up Kids, or good Green Day, or NOFX) for at least 6 or 7 years.
I still put on this album from time to time, it was the first 'proper' album I ever got alongside Green Day's 'Warning'. And these guys were way ahead of Busted/McFly, were genuinely pretty good as well and not childish and manufactured (although McFly did have some pretty awesome stuff at some points, like this for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDO-X9im7m8).
This album sadly started the trend for shit bands like ADTR blending hardcore and pop-punk in a really obvious way (rather than, say, NFG) but holy shit did BNO get it right. Make Yourself Sick and Trainwreck are incredible records.
This is a good start
Fenix TX - Threesome
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNotaBtMORM
You dropped a contender in the first post

Nah
Phoebe Cates innit

I hope this is a joke
one of the worst pre-american idiot songs
this is the best green day song(s)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNq9gmY_Oz4
Pretty mainstream
But id actually say this is a contender. Green Day made a few great songs before they went shit in the 2000's.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8dh9gDzmz8
you're not wrong
because it's best, i'm going for this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F-ipYpd53I

Note to self:
holy shit, these guys above me have picked some horribly shit songs. meh.
Erm, and below me here
Wow. I can always depend on DiS threads to have a modicum of good taste.
There's always an exception to the rule.
I'll add the Wrens' Built in Girls to help balance the scales. Seriously, I'd rather have bedbugs crawling in my ears than listen to these songs. *exit thread*

Well i raise you M&M's
Which definitely gets the title for best pop-punk riff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZs88WWGDoo
Seems like i'm re-living primary school comparing pop-punk, ah nostalgia.
Not to mention the lyrics
"There are only so many ways, I can make love with my hand"
Sums up most guys teenage years. Ahhh memories!
Political Candian pop punk featuring member of The Weakerthans
for bonus indie points. Propaghandi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5YZ7FELtCI
Pop punk pretty much sucks
So probably some Blink 182, or something.
you go girl! tell these losers!
Millencolin - No Cigar
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6NXR3flU-I
GREAT SHOUT THIS
quick, everyone, Tony Hawks, now!
I should probably say something by like Screeching Weasel or something, idk
but the answer is probably The Starting Line's seminal cover of the J. Lo and Ja Rule classic, 'I'm Real'.

dunno if objectively pop punk though
yeah the verses are a bit declamed rather than sung
but the chorus and riffs are undeniable
Extremely tough
I'd have to go for New Found Glory - hit or miss
or Jawbreaker - do you still hate me?
I've always had a soft spot for
Private Eye, by The Alkaline Trio
i'd probably have to say most of goddammit
by alkaline trio. great album amongst all the shit in the pop-punk genre.
97 from their first EP is absolutely fantastic.
Gotta love A3.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnMuzvwbXQ0&feature=related
and yeah
Goddammit probably takes the title for best pop-punk album ever.
I heart '97 SO BAD
I don't deserve this
dumdumdumdumdum dum de dum dum
18 MONTHS SEEMS LIKE FUCKING ETERNITY!!!
It's got to be 'Basketcase' by Green Day
Perfect pop punk song that is internationally renowned and still as fresh today as it was back then.
its probably the weekest song on Dookie though
Just don't get the love.
Bouncing Souls - True Believers
always
thread shouldbe renamed
remember p-rock? prove it.
I'll just do a list of loads of earlier pop punk (Im not sure if you can call modern bands pop punk...as it is soooooo corporately marketed)
I'll include an elvis costello song cos he was punk in essence early on
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpprOGsLWUo
oooh here are the revillos....not exactly the 'best' pop punk, but a template for future pop punk girl voice copies (unless someone knows of an earlier one)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lLNL51NAoc
babylons burning - the ruts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCkNu9OxThc
I guess that a lot of the clash stuff was more pop perhaps london calling being the best of their pop punk
of course the buzzcocks were the first AND the best perveyers of pop punk with this being the pinnacle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bif2q_Zo3-4
although my absolute favourate from them is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ63Ite4l7g
of course john peels favourate the undertones
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAtUw6lxcis
the only ones
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvO7HNQPFRI
I feel that in memory of poly styrene i should also include

Bow wow wow's drummer Dave barb was also in republica later on
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_R0Kvk7G9U punky peon to recording your fave music on cassette
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4Gh-GH8Miw....this is more poppy
you may think that this lot are more manufactured....but are they really less punk than green day (who I do like)? Green Day are a reliable corporate stock market business proposition, after all.....far more reliable to 'invest in' than one of malcolm maclaren's influenced bands.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBP64ZssRNY
I guess the sex pistols are also pop punk
Im not including lots of bands cos im not sure if they are pop.
oh...sorry you guys....did you mean the genre of music that is marketed to teenage american kids
who are....a bit wild and crazy? but also too sensitive to be metalhedz?
I love this video sooooooo much, the contrast between wholesome cleancut looking american teens (in clean black tees) idolising 4 armenian satan lookalikes :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSvFpBOe8eY (SOAD - chop suey)
can this be called pop punk? or is it limited to greenday/blink 182/sum41 sort of thing?
SOAD are nu-metal
but nu-metal and pop punk were both big at the same time
audio karate - nintendo 89
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jk9cm3RTmpw
The only Audio Karate track I know is 'Jesus Is Alive And Well

SUB THREAD: Best New Found Glory Song?
Sincerely Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLIepUI465o

Zulu
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9k7LnlV3DAo
or Wendy Clear
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIC6TQedvBE
I think actually now
it might be Josie (which someone mentioned) and it has a hilarious(ly tacky) video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6kfin-UeAQ&feature=related
I know all blink videos are essentially the same but this is pretty special
also, I know its more generic
but I actually prefer Scott's drumming a lot of the time, Travis is undoubtedly a better more versitile drummer (eventually) but I'm just a sucker for the d-beat

It's gotta be Blink - Going Away To College. It's GOT to be.
well
either Blink 182: Dammit or The Exploding Hearts: I'm a pretender
Armageddon
Alkaline Trio
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CP55zSLhLGY
As a man who runs a pop punk and nu metal revival night, here is my expert opinion
I'll give you a top 10, in no particular order
GUK.
Even the mention of them has once again ruined my playlists for the next month or so.
ONE NIGHT, DOESN'T ME-
No. *No.* I will be strong.
stellar choices
top list
My Friend's Over You
I didn't even realise they were going out.
Might by Archers Of Loaf
Probably doesn't count, but it sounds like it could have been referred to as a pop punk song if they weren't a REALLY GOOD BAND.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrfpNboPj-I
mm
interesting shout, but this is the best (though obvious) AOL song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnIBBbWFJ38&feature=related
No way you could call that pop punk by any definition though
or even assert it sounded a bit like it, which is what I was doing.
Web In Front is just a stone cold indie rock classic!
yeah right I kinda see what you mean
both indie really though right
A couple more classics:
The Movielife - Hand Grenade: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MwCIXadLDE
Midtown - Become What You Hate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcF-b0srD3c
Did anyone else go to the 'Movielife' show with Vinnie at The Peel a couple of years back when Gabe turned up and played Become What You Hate? I met them both at New Slang after and did a shot with Gabe, he gave me a huge hug as well. My 15-year-old self would've probably died if that'd happened at the time.
ah man, The Movielife were ace
<3 Hand Grenade.
Jamestown was a tune as well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FS0JRdOEleg&feature=related
are busted too camp/boy bandy for pop punk fans? i was never really sure because although there was a lot of contrived boy band gimmicky stuff about them, the songs were basically polished versions of blink, etc. if you ignore the awful ballads they did. anyway, i don't mind admitting that i like air hostess, and i really like charlie (watch the busted documentary on youtube, it's wonderful)

maybe better categorized as ska, but it's definitely in the 90s american ska/punk tradition. in terms of breakneck, joyous singalongability, it's pretty fucking difficult to beat this.
That Bowling For Soup song is an absolute tune.
I was never really a Blink fan, but that Box Car Racer album
was fucking amazing. Best thing Tom Delonge has ever done, by far.
did you hear the self titled blink album?
it's kinda similar, better even
Yeah, I enjoyed that one and Take Off Your Pants...
My little brother is a huge Blink fan so I took him to see them a couple of times - they were always fun live and those two albums are great but in general I just never got into them in the same way I got into bands like NFG for example.
yeah, was always more into Green Day and NOFX
particularly during enema of state era
AIR HOSTESS I LIKE THE WAY YOU DRESS
Y'know I hate to fly but i feel much better occupied my mind writing you a love letter, I messed my pants when we flew over france, Will I see you soon in my hotel room for a holiday romance?
Air hostess.
Na Na Na Na

REALLY SURPRISED no one's mentioned Jimmy Eat World
If they count? They definitely used to...
Blister, innit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBeDRwDG-gY
But other than that I always fucking loved Alkaline Trio.
Dammit though DiS, reading through this thread has got my nostalgia going pretty severely. Haven't listened to Millencollin or Saves The Day (or Get Up Kids, or good Green Day, or NOFX) for at least 6 or 7 years.
(still love JEW actually, I've just put Clarity on)
I guess I alwasys thought of JEW as more 'emo' than 'pop punk'
I'm seeing them play Bleed American and Clarity back to back in June - it's going to be the best gig ever.
yeah, but those two genres are pretty tightly linked really
so great shout, shame on everyone :P
Their name abbreviated is JEW
hurh hurh.

If we're gonna talk about Busted, let's talk about the Dum Dums
You Do Something To Me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uk8K48kd0kc
I still put on this album from time to time, it was the first 'proper' album I ever got alongside Green Day's 'Warning'. And these guys were way ahead of Busted/McFly, were genuinely pretty good as well and not childish and manufactured (although McFly did have some pretty awesome stuff at some points, like this for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDO-X9im7m8).
Ctrl + f Self Esteem
What!!!! You are all mad.
all the songs i'd thought of have already been mentioned but if Less Than Jake are pop punk
then Gainesville Rock City...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwEW2x-UI_c
I listened to this again recently
it wasn't as good as I remembered. I think it was the production and the vocals being kinda nasally and that. Still great in my memory though
The Get Up Kids

"Pep Talk" by DESCENDENTS. Every other suggestion is wrong. Some of them are REALLY wrong. This is not opinion. This is fact.

The Middle
By Jimmy Eat World. Surprised it hasn't been mentioned
cuz its shite
probably
Almost said it's their worst song
But then I remembered the two (three?!) albums since Bleed American. :(
hah, even futures
has better songs than the middle.
If you're going Bleed American at least go for that well known Clarity b-side, which is up there as one of their best ever
I think
it's good
Boys Night Out - I Got Punched In The Nose...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOdl7A5y6wQ
This album sadly started the trend for shit bands like ADTR blending hardcore and pop-punk in a really obvious way (rather than, say, NFG) but holy shit did BNO get it right. Make Yourself Sick and Trainwreck are incredible records.
ahh haven't heard this in ages, cheers!
such a tune
