If I was interviewing him, which I'm not, I'd maybe ask him "Deww yeww prefferr Tetsz...or Fennesz?"
Tim Hecker, Ben Frost, Final, Birchville Cat Motel & Kevin Drumm as a good start.
apart from Panda Bear, if he counts?
But willing to be persuaded....
Pandy Bro rocks a geetar
I think he just needs to develop more. Or I have shit taste.
A table of equipment and a bag of random instruments and this is what you get. Probably the worst thing I've ever heard.
He started following me on twitter once. I was new to the whole game and followed him back, but it seemed a bit pointless after a while.
We'll stage an intervention!
but you're such a big fan
They could use a guitarist and a keyboardist
Maybe the one bloke would step away from his rack and get towards the front of the stage for the songs w/ vox, as much as I like seeing them nod at each other and and fiddle around with their toys in ambient lighting
but it sounds not unlike a couple of acts I saw at the Godspeed ATP.
I guess I'm going to have to rework the soundtrack to my pseudo-mumblecore rom-com.
I'd completely forgotten that mumblecore existed.
with the 21st century response to 'axe-wielding'
with those Yamaha keyboards that had the 'DJ!' function.
his album the roots and leaves is actually very solid and he has a good vocal, the remix version of the album is even better.
I'm particularly fond of this bomarr remix
but my first thought when watching that video was "he has nice hands".
... so, so fucking bad.
The guy has basically one (1) idea, and that's a sort of 2001-ish sub-Múm cutesy naive broken-toys-playing-themselves thing that wears out its welcome good & proper by the 3 min mark, and yet he's still going at it after 10.
It might work if (a) it wasn't so hopelessly derivative, (b) he didn't have such a limited sense of melody, (c) his drum programming skills weren't so profoundly shite, (d) his idea of what you can do with loops wasn't so lame and one-dimensional, or (e) his whole compositional approach was something other then "hey let's see what else I can drag out of the toybox to tootle on next".
I mean it's not as though I'm a laptop genius, but you did post this to invite comment. Actually I'm not sure what infuriates me more, the music or the fact that he looks like a fucking Thunderbirds puppet.
It all just demonstrates what a two-edged sword modern music technology has turned out to be: on the upside, it means more people than ever before can make music, while on the downside, it means at least three hundred million of them are po-faced fucktards like this guy.
Oh, and he plays a blue guitar. Blue!! here's the twat playing a sensitive song on it:
but i simply don't get the hate, i think the OP track is alright if i just listen and dont watch, bit minimal for my tastes and now and again the beat goes a little eclectic but nonetheless alright for a live performance and as for persecuting the guy for daring to play the acoustic guitar - how fucking dare he! - what?
i.e it's a genre where, yes there's some amazing stuff, but one where "artists" can definitely get away with a lot of shit and bluster, especially with the zeitgeist being on their side: But this case just sounds so poorly executed: Sounds like he's jumped on some bandwagon without actually having any interesting sounds or ideas at all: that's the rub for me, man...Not that I tend to hate much on these boards...actively avoid that, but this stuff...jesus...touched a nerve.
and i can understand the sight of slightly gangly bearded guy blowing on a green plastic keyboard has the potential to get up anyones nose but thats more about the look of his live performance than the beat istelf which has admittedly been done in various ways various times, but none-the-less wasnt done that badly. (and his album and that remix album i linked up there by the the likes of Bomarr monk and polyphonic has some pretty decent songs on it.) It was more blisters early morning tirade that confused me.
Obvs this is purely a response to that performance..Haven't heard his other stuff but will do, purely out of curiosity
Do you think?
