Death Grips
Haven't seen anything on the board about him yet.
Anyone else heard of him?
I only discovered him the other day. Pretty aggressive US rap featuring Zach Hill of 'Hella' fame to some degree (although I can't find any info as to how much input he's had). I know he recorded the drums for the following song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFmZ6WDkuj0
and his latest mixtape is up for free at http://thirdworlds.net/exmilitary.php
Awesome stuff.

Sorry but no one cares apparently.
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4283021
there was a proper thread about it aages ago where people did
But yeah, do really like that track...
Think Death Grips is a group including Zach Hill rather than a rapper featuring Zach Hill. Or I read something that led me to believe that.
Interesting ideas, interesting to listen to, but
I just found it all too abrasive on a production level. Its a tough listen, thats for sure.
I could see a lot of folks around here liking it though.
That Guillotine track is fly though, more like that, and I'd be in.
The abrasiveness
is almost what attracted me to it in the first place, but I can see where you're coming from.
Fucking love that 'Takyon' track.
Just not something I am presonally attracted to.
I could see grime fans liking it too, maybe.
Takyon is the other track I liked.
i on the other hand wish it was a part of a whole massive genre of hiphop/rap even more abrasive and psychedelic
:/

please provide names/links!
always on the lookout for this sorta stuff. i've certainly never encountered a massive genre of it.
THIS IS FUCKING AMAZING
that's all
ok two things
this is miles better than fucking Odd Future
it doesn't need the Interstellar Overdrive song to be 6 minutes long (my only criticism)
yes, yes it does
that could go on for another 6 minutes for me. Why has no one thought of sampling that before. amazing.
ok I am now of the latter opinion
one of my fav albums from last year
should be good at primavera :D
Can I maybe just....umm...my Dis review. ahem...yeah.
http://drownedinsound.com/releases/16426/reviews/4143291
still great
Really enjoyed this record
Love the almost punk like aggression on some of the tracks. Any record that starts with a Charles Manson rant is worth a listen .highly recommend
Brilliant record
one of my personal finds from year-end lists.
Just downloaded it last night by coincidence
It's bloody brilliant. I'm a sucker for this "abrasive hip hop" stuff (see above) - like Anti-Pop Consortium, Dalek, Ice, Techno Animal... what am I missing???? (I know I need to get Cannibal Ox, just haven't yet)
i think you'll probably like this
ffs

death comet crew. i love all that stuff too and i only discovered these guys recently. they had members of ny no wave band ike yard and that^ track features rapping from rammellzee. 85, hot damn.

Thanks, will investigate!
oh yeah and...
sensational

I'll Sleep When You're Dead by El-P
it's basically all rhythmic clatter and angry shouting and DEAD GOOD
Not all so aggressive but somewhat related and really good =
Mike Ladd
Negrophilia is one of the angriest noisiest rap records I have ever heard
musically..the rappign si actually more mellow than his other stuff
El-P and Company Flow
I like Death Grips, but Coflow get the same effects with 1000x more subtlety.
y'see that El has finally finished his new record
it better be good
They were amazing live (when I finally managed to see them, after the initial XOYO/ATP winning combination of failure)
Tried to imagine a sound more annoying than the dude's voice.
I couldn't. He sounds like Immortal Technique strenuously taking a dump. I've tried and tried to give these dudes a chance but I just can't stand them. Beats are alright, but I'm definitely getting a 'rap for people who don't like rap' vibe from these guys. I'll stick with Flocka and Rozay.
This is def for the crossover rap crew that
really like Dalek and like Anticon and the like. Thats not a bad thing tho, there's a lane for this stuff, its just not really what I go for with rap these days. I would have been all over this about 10 years ago. The last thing we want to do is start throwing up fences again, I mean, its not like DG are screaming about 'wack emcees' or 'back in the day' nonsense, he's just pissed at *the man* or whatever.
I dont think this stuff is comparable to odd future, its really a completely different pallet.
Agree with this
Although I am on the pro-Dalek side of things. Dalek is the closest comparison I can come up with.
I don't think it's an anticon/defjux kind of thing at all
and only barely dalek-esq.
People who go for the former are consuming a a specific subset of the established hip hop genre and do act as a crossover act for people interested in wider rap.
Dalek has roots in hip hop yes but its most popular with people who have NO INTEREST in hip hop at all and would not be using them as a 'stepping stone' band. Dalek have been lauded by many who are actively hostile against hip hop in general. Depending on age the same type of people go on about ICE/Techno Animal....interesting that people have to wait for 10 years between releases to find hip hop they like.
Death Grips on the other hand haven't made any 'genre' claims and they have released through a number of free netlabels from grindcorekareoke to northamericanhardcore to mp3death as well as forums. From my own experience of them live they have attracted a diverse crowd and everyone in the audience were familiar with the band and have come to this band through online channels that they were comfortable with. A dalek gig , on the other hand is no different from the fat cunts you see at a Melvins gig or something
What's with the anti-Dalek feeling here?
While I agree Death Grips is much less rooted in a sonic haze and much more centred around creative use of samples and beats, there are similarities in how the records make me feel. Death Grips are more fun, obviously, and less emotionally heavy, but the sonic vibe - aggressive, psychedelic hip-hop - is similar. I'd also say it takes a lot of courage to make an emotionally heavy record - it opens an artist up to all manner of criticisms from defensive not-in-my-name listeners.
Besides, the opening and closing tracks of Ex Military are VERY Dalek-esque in terms of sonics.
lol
``...like Immortal Technique strenuously taking a dump```
:D enjoyed this description
his rapping style reminds me of
Eugene Oxbow. That's the first comparison the hit me when I heard it, over anything else.
yeh
they're both black
well spotted.
not what I meant, as well you know. IMPOSING. and it just kind of sounds the same.
'imposing' black men who are all 'the same' eh?
that's it.
carruthers
death to false rap, eh?
cheers
I AM THE BEAST I WORSHIP
:'D''''''
Listen to these. Go on.

Nice.
An amazing band
and really blew me away live.
I don't think they are in any way pretending to be anything other than what they are and they draw different crowds.
I thought the london show would be full of rockists/dalek fans but that wasn't the case.
I love Death Grips
I don't think they're for 'people who don't like rap' at all really; I think it's something new. Aggressively hilarious, but there's a subtlety to the beats and the repeating lines and patterns. It's the same as Waka in that respect- lots of disparate little bits coming together to make the tunes.
New video!
http://youtu.be/WpxZdL2hQVc
ace!
rap and vocal fx fuckin' like machines
Xrin Arms might be worth a listen re:psy/noisy hiphop
http://grindcorekaraoke.com/album/human-hallucinogen
see this is what i mean
I lvoe mr arms but this is pretty much standard (but really fucking good) hip hop but it's 'cool' because of his weird digital hardcore/grindcore background
PROJECTING
Two records out this year apparently, with the first dropping in April
Also got a guest spot on the new Bug album...
WIN WIN WIN WIN :D
WHEEE
hope they play live in London somewhere other than XOYO/ATP-related.
signed to EPIC, a line of Sony Music.
VEVO shit all over youtube videos :/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIrKSqb4H4A&feature=youtu.be
weird one to sign with...
oh well, looking forward to the two records
So, now the streams up...
What does everyone think?
Honestly
Incredible.
Listened to next to nothing else for a month-plus.
How about a link and make that post useful?

Or, instead of everybody reading this thread doing their own google search:

You're welcome.
Stuffs on youtubes but maybe more convenently elsewhere?
http://www.youtube.com/user/deathgrippin?feature=watch
I haven't had chance to properly listen yet but sounds promising! ^__^
Enjoying!!!
I am obsessed with this band
The new album sounds incredible. I'm sorry but Oddfuture is like Disney in comparison
Review on these pages, soon.
(cos I wrote one this morn.)
Words are up now.
Go read them?
wow.. 10/10 eh?
good review though. lokoign forward to them at primavera :D
it is an excelelnt record. will buy next week I think.
Too excited...
Seeing these next month in Nottingham, can't wait! Should be interesting to see whether they play the new album entirely or mix it up a little with stuff from last album, either way my nutts will be exploding all over the place.
just finished listening to the record
the room seems incredibly quiet now
SOON YOUR CREW WILL BE SERVING SANDWICHES NAMED AFTER ME
They were so good at Coachella
Zach Hill fucking killed it. Need to hear the new record.
Is it just me
or is the record quite murky? Like, both the vocals and the beats quite drowned out?
This is excellent and Hacker is a song of the year candidate
...but I still think I prefer Ex Military, just about - it's wilder and weirder, with amazing segues and genius samples as well as the brilliant original music found on both records
a few listens might change this
I still don't care for Exmilitary
But I've been pretty much won over by The Money Store. More variety in the vocals and the music is a lot more interesting. Pretty huge step up as far as I'm concerned.
Takyon is such a great tune though.
I can't go to their gig in Dublin.
It fucking breaks me. So much
I love that you posted this twice
and STILL didn't correct the terrible grammar
