The role of experimental/avant-garde music within society
Hey..
What role do avant-garde artists such as Sunn 0))), Frank Zappa, The Velvet Underground, Merzbow, Mike Patton, Earth, Throbbing Gristle, Sonic Youth’ SYR projects etc. have within society, culture and even the human senses? In other words, not to ask what the point is of making and listening to such music, but instead, what are its social implications on culture and people? Does such music go beyond mere “rebellion” against the masses? Does such music even challenge the beliefs of other people? Why does “noise” piss people off? Is it because of the deliberate loud/violent/experimental intention? Why is it even considered an “other” type of music?
Just a few thoughts going around in my head that may open up some sort of interesting discussion..
