It's 1999, I'm in halls in Norwich mid way through my first term at Uni. We're enjoying a spell of weather you'd not normally associate with autumn and I can hear a bunch of people outside on the grass. Most of my corridor have gone home for half term but a few people have stayed on. I open my door to see who is up and hear this song echoing around the halls. It's shimmering and beautiful, and I take a few seconds to recognise it, and I just lay there in a slightly hungover state listening to the slightly ethereal sound of it reverberating around those white, knackered walls, noticing the two other people left on my block doing the same.
Such a great song. I still shiver every time that shimmery bit comes in after the refrain.
I was properly addicted to this record as a whole, but especially this track. It was a beautiful set closer the following year and it became the unofficial anthem for some of us folks in the first year around those corridors. It reminds me of so many things; the excitement of student loan payment day and the beginning of the 5 for £20 offer Virgin Megastore did, trekking out of town to get a ticket for the band's UEA show, the video at the subsequent gig of this swirling whirlpool. But more than anything it recalls that amazing feeling of lying around in the sunshine having naff all to do with some new friends and thinking 'yeah, this is pretty sweet...'
