Proper gutted. :(
Was not expecting this at all. :(
I don't think he was in the band when they recorded SATS, but according to the Cookie Mountain credits he plays drums, guitar and piano (talented guy) on this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-hS9qX0JI0
Often, positive announcements about public figures in ill health are just ways of ensuring that the ill party is able to get on with treatment or, if necessary, plan for the inevitable without any press intrusion. The rally driver Richard Burns took this approach when he had his brain tumour, with his manager releasing several statements to the media suggesting that treatment was progressing very well. In reality, Burns simply wanted to be able to prepare for what he knew from an early point was a terminal condition without being constantly hounded by journalists about how his condition was progressing.
If so he must have really been on the mend, making this news even more of a shock.
I think the drummer was taking his place and someone else playing drums.
So far they've only cancelled the next 5 shows, pretty brave of them if they're gonna carry on from the 29th.
will probably still be good, but he was an awesome bassist (and player of a load of other instruments) and will definitely be missed.
I must have missed all the original announcements so didn't see this one coming at all. Their new album got delivered today aswell.
'Tonight' is still monumental.
Just horrible. I read a piece somewhere this month and knew he was having treatment... had no idea it was that bad.
really horrible - RIP - cancer is such a horrible thing.
So talented, so young. It's truly tragic. Thanks for the music Gerard.
Why is everyone dying at the moment? :(
Return to Cookie Mountain was, to me, the finest indie record of the last decade by a distance. Some incredible music to leave behind as his legacy at least.
Unexpectedly so - not that I expected this news after previous reports which made no suggestion that things were so serious.
Not that I knew him. I think it's my age. I'm 31. This guy is 34. Was 34. Has what must still feel like a life ahead of him. And he's in a great position to make it so. And it's robbed. Feels a bit like when Heath Ledger died - you get that feeling that somehow it's wrong that it happened. Just leaves you... me... cold. Numbed.
as above, such a tragically young age to die, for someone with so much more to give. R.I.P.
Sad new, far to young to die. RIP
There's a lovely, funny scene involving the whole band in the film they've put together for their new album. Really worth a watch:

RIP Gerard Smith.
Saw this dude play an absolute blinding show with TVOTR a couple of years ago at ABC in Glasgow. Will always remember it. Great gig. Sad news.
This is terrible....
RIP young man
terrible to hear this, 34 years old, no age at all.
