that're better than Mandy Moore covering Rihanna's "Umbrella".
and maybe I didn't explain the premise very well. You know, like how Flaming Lips covered Kylie's "Can't Get You Outta My Head"? But like nowadays-- a contemporary artist covering a recently released song by another contemporary artist.
On a more sensible level, Mr Tamborine Man
Like in the 70s, Bowie would cover Tom Verlaine, Springsteen, etc. In the 80s, Fun Boy Three covering the Go-Go's, etc. In the 90s, the aforementioned Flaming Lips and Radiohead.
Doesn't happen that much anymore, eh? I mean, there was the Deerhunter/Jay Retard song switch single...but not too much stuff on the whole. I wonder why.
Ryan Adams - Wonderwall (originally by Oasis)
Franz Ferdinand - All My Friends (originally by LCD Soundsystem)
cool to know
The original's on Spotify if you're interested. It's very similar to The Walkmen's cover version:
Hope Sandoval did Air's Cherry Blossom Girl.
Iron & Wine did Such Great Heights.
The Shins did We Will Become Silhouettes.
The Twilight Singers did Hyperballad (Bjork) and Live With Me (Massive Attack).
That fella did Heartbeats.
jay reatard doing becks 'gamma ray' is brilliant
also there was that spilt that will sheff (okkervil river) and charles bissell (the wrens) released of them doing a song of each other that was pretty good
I think Zykos did a version of On Tour With Zykos
It's So Hard to Fall in Love
Brand New Love
Does that count?
There's a few on the limited edition of the last album, with Casiotone for the Painfully Alone etc.
For the record, Mandy Moore's cover of 'Senses Working Overtime' is both ridiculous (concept) and awesome (execution)
(ignore the rubbish Naruto video)
Trail of Dead covered GBV's "Gold Heart Mountain Top Queen Directory" on Century of Self but I guess that's not a particularly recent song.
Adem covers loads of stuff on his 'takes' album from smashing pumpkins to deus to aphex twin
johnny cash's cover of i see a darkness (bonnie prince billy)
Meastro echolplex and solander both do acoustic covers of A prayer for god by Shellac
cocrosie cover ohio by damien jurado
delta mirror cover blind by tv on the radio
The split single with Sonic youth covering Touch me I'm sick and Mudhoney covering Halloween.
the split single with Loop covering Godflesh and vice versa
a couple of years ago.
Foals covered Super Inuit:
and Holy Fuck did Balloons(no youtube link so here's a hypemachine one):
Okkervil River got some of their favourite contemporaries to each record a cover of one of the new tracks. A good idea, except unfortunately most of them weren't very good. I liked the Casiotone cover of Love Connection by Parenthetical Girls. I've seen Thom Yorke sing the chorus of Maps by YYY's at the start of Everything in its Right Place when he needs vocals for Jonny to loop- I'd love to see that turned into a full cover.
I watched it on TV. I was so excited to go see both Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Radiohead. I'd had my tickets from the pre-sale since the year before.
I got gut rot the day before the festival. I spent the duration of the festival weekend shitting, wretching and throwing up; kinda like Reading but without the music.
Seeing him play that, on TV, knowing I could be there, BROKE MY GODDAMN HEART.
It Was suprisingly good
i used to have the split 7" they did, no idea where it's got to though :(
The Books' cover of Eluvium's 'Leaves Eclipse the Light' is very fine indeed.
The Wave Pictures did an album of André Herman Düne songs
Did he do a couple of Low songs last year or did I dream it?
from indie bands trying not to sound earnest (and failing), the trend did lead to Elbow covering Destiny's Child's Independent Women:
You often get bands covering other band's songs when they stand in for them at festivals. eg The Flaming Lips doing Seven Nation Army (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHsLZ7zYKsQ), and this surprise guest coming out to replace the Beastie Boys after they had to pull out of the All Points West festival due to MCA's cancer treatment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftLgL-89B-0
It probably doesn't.
Have Gorillaz covered the xx? Huh?
I think my initial impulse for this thread was that-- even though artists nowadays do it live-- they don't tend to put covers on studio records.
Or am I wrong again?
I really like it.
thankyou for bringing this into my life.
