Emergency & I (I think?)
For Your Own Special Sweetheart
pretty ambitious by any standards
The Crane Wife by The Decemberists
Tim by The Replacements
Was actually their first album on any record label too.
if you can stick the production.
it sucks all of the life out of the songs.
yeah, there are records that have been glossier, but then again they weren't made by the band who had just made Bleach, who would go on to make In Utero, and who didn't then go on tour and play those same songs with a million times more dynamism, intensity and speed.
if you've never heard it, i can highly recommend a bootleg recorded for Dutch radio at the Amsterdam Paradiso in 1991. as it's a professional recording the quality is great, and the live renditions shit all over the recorded ones.
Think about it, you have a bank of songs ready to go which you know are ten times better than anyone else of your time. Why would't you record them like that?
then you just haven't been listening hard enough. It used to get way more flack than Nevermind (and, yeah, rightly so). Even the band were vocal in their dislike of its production/mix - hence why we got a complete Brendan O'Brien remix a couple of years ago.
Dookie's alright isn't it? Idk
It is a masterpiece and definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, my favourite album of the 00's.
Also, being pedantic, Emergency & I wasn't a major label debut.
sure, it didnt have the punch of earlier stuff, but it was much more ambitious as a whole and in my opinion overshadowed only by the 'tides of tomorrow' ep.
