Charlotte Church
this compilation's great
http://open.spotify.com/album/0P8qRRnAdhpVphAJHELCCB
Creed or some shit?
Low are mormons
most early country and blues artists talk about god constantly.
get this guy

does this count?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNddVWzACU4
i liked this band.
Here goes...
Anberlin, As I lay Dying, Underoath, The Devil Wears Prada, Norma Jean, Becoming the Archetype, Extol, Blindside, The Chariot, As Cities Burn, Showbread, Emery, Zao, Training For Utopia, With Blood Comes Cleansing, Tourniquet, Believer, The Almost, Showbread, Close Your Eyes, We Came as Romans, Times of Grace, Flyleaf...basically a lot of metal but not much indie/alternative.
A good shout is Starflyer 59, and then The Prayer Chain, The Choir, All Star United, Future of Forestry, Relient K, The Throes and lest we forget, Delirious. I'm sure I've forgotten something really obvious in all that lot (no, not Cliff Richard!!!)
The "really obvious" one you've forgotten
is dc:talk.
Yup.
And I forgot Steve, Athlete and Jars of Clay. I know nothing.
Cheers
for taking the time to reply with so many suggestions!
Most of the pop-punk/emo/hardcore/metal bands wot you mention I'm already aware of. It's the more indie-rock related genre stuff that I be after, which is a total shame because, as you point out, this seems to be the specific area which is lacking anything relatively decent.
First As Cities Burn album is fucking incredible
Second was absolutely terrible. Love the first Showbread record as well, should check out more of their stuff. It's funny cos I'm pretty "anti-religion" by-the-by, but I guess it's kinda irrelevant when it comes to music. I find Aaron Weiss's lyrics fucking fascinating just because they're about personal struggle I guess.

Lift to Experience
comes to mind.
Came here to say this.
If this was what was played in church....
This
is exactly what the kind of thing I was after
Then this thread has been a success!
Just as was told, justice will unfold.
Anal Cunt
Jars of Clay
are about the only Christian band I listen to. Most others I tend to find pretty lame tbh - although, not necessarily in the cliched "all Christian rock is rubbish" way, more in a "well, this is about as good as the Foos or Blink or whatever they're going for, but that's not my kinda music". Lots of earnest singer-songwriters too, who may well be as good as other secular artists on the scene, but again not my bag. Although if you're counting Sufjan, then you should maybe count Shad - if you like your Pharcyde-style hip hop, he's definitely worth a listen. Otherwise, yeah, blues, some soul, lots of reggae... I dunno. Oh, and Dylan's "born again" trilogy get a lot of flak, but Slow Train Coming's actually a good album.
Oh, there was fairly decent band called Quench kicking around a few years ago
(well, ok, more like 10). Album called Afterglow. I still listen to it occasionally, which is more than I can say for a lot of the other indie-ish stuff I was listening to then.
Aye
Generally I avoid listening to Christian stuff unless I specifically want to listen to worship stuff. I shall revist Jars of Clay though, my dad use to play them loads when I was younger and I can't remember enjoying them that much but maybe they'll be more up my street now I've had a few more birthdays.

Hey guys, this song is incredible, alright?
Jackson Waters - 'Center Of Attention'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zsujzgnvpd4
Iron & Wine
Sam Beam is an Atheist, but the songs are so steeped in religion that they could be considered pretty Christian.
Current 93
Coldplay, U2, Athlete
The message is cloaked but its still there.

would judee sill count
she's not technically a Christian but a lot of her music is informed by Christian mythology -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jp1qAh4n128
Mars ILL
Okay, they're a rap group that happen to be Christian, but still pretty decent:

whilst we're talking about hiphop
the first two GRITS albums are great. like, classic.

Surprised no-one's mentioned Belle & Sebastian!
This is a lovely one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9-fTBTgfT4

Gospel Funk
I've just bought this compilation:
http://www.numerogroup.com/catalog_detail.php?uid=00262
And 'sweet jesus' it's good. Doesn't meet the criteria of being indie but a lovely roots record with a nice CD inlay covering the history of gospel.
The Welcome Wagon
Similar to (infact produced by) Sufjan, but more Christian-centric. Their debut Welcome to The Welcome Wagon was excellent and deserves more attention.
There's some good ones here

LOVE that thread <3

Steve - Falling Down
http://open.spotify.com/album/3eEULDjSKfl1XynZlcYKpW
I love that album
Not so cunningly released on 9/11 though, which is possibly why success eluded them...
this one's about heaven

Danielson
I'm a big fan (although not slightly religious).
Bruce Springsteen - The Rising
Spiritualized? No!
No mention of Pedro the Lion???
I love his stuff. His solo album Curse Your Branches is amazing stuff. And he has lost his faith now!
I came here to say this ^
Cities by Anberlin is one of my favourite albums
And my other favourites are Velvet Underground, My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division, etc., so they're in good company.
To paraphrase CS Lewis, Anberlin don't write songs about Christianity, they're just Christians who write about other things.
