Jan-March 2011 - 1st Quarter Favourite Releases/Gigs/Remixes/Mixtapes/etc
Hallo!
So it is very nearly the end of March. The year is broken down into neat and tidy quarters. And whilst reducing music down to 'lists' is a little predictable for peoples like us (and hatred of lists, is probably more prevalent amongst those who love to read and create them) these threads are often very good at helping to find out what is utterly awesome, that others might not have caught onto or given a chance.
Feel free to format yours however you like with as much or as little explanation as you like. Here's mine:
Ambient sounds with their hovering textures have been pretty much the dominant sound pouring from my speakers/headphones. Something about the gentle clustering of pixelated sounds that helps me think, that and the fact the Tim Hecker and How to Dress Well albums have been so utterly gorgeous. Having said that, away from my desk my headphones haven't really stopped playing Kurt Vile on trains, Bright Eyes on fist-clenched walks and Cut Copy when I attempt to run. Then again, pulsating beats have never been too far away...
3 Songs I've been obsessed with:
1. Austra - Beat And the Pulse - pretty much what I'd imagine a Matthew Dear and Ladytron collab would sound like. http://soundcloud.com/austra_midi/beat-and-the-pulse
2. Gang Gang Dance - Glass Jar - be stunned if 'Eye Contact' isn't in DiS' top 5 albums of the year http://www.ganggangdance.com/
3. The Veils - Bloom - can I have Finn Andrews re-sing every song I like? Such a voice http://soundcloud.com/drownedinsound/bloom-the-veils
Favourite DiScoveries
- http://soundcloud.com/christianaids - ebbs in that land between Blondes and The Field
- http://edinburghschoolforthedeaf.bandcamp.com - their Mary Chain-fi popped up in a thread about DiSser bands.
- http://soundcloud.com/foe-mania - really looking forward to seeing her again tomorrow. Brash 'tude of Uffie with a healthy Kills/Polly Harvey lust.
- http://soundcloud.com/halls - ambient-ish, has remixed Gold Panda, join the dots
Things I'm most looking forward to in next few months: M83's new lp, seeing Gang Gang Dance play this record live, the return of Jeniferever, debut album by memoryhouse and the DiS stages at Great Escape and Liverpool SoundCity. And maybe new records by The Stills and Justice, if they ever materialise...
...and all the stuff I'm going to remember seconds after posting this.

PJ Harvey
Radiohead
p.s. made a playlist of some of this http://open.spotify.com/user/seaninsound/playlist/3q18uzsyFKv3AzjyJYxGZd
Totally agree on Halls - he's the best new artist I've discovered this year
just ahead of Two Inch Punch and Mode Moderne.
Best albums: PJ Harvey, Josh T. Pearson, Braids and British Sea Power.
Best songs: Metronomy - The Look
tUnEyArDs- Bizness
So far this year I've been relying on Jon Hillcock to tell me what to listen to through his fantastic podcast (http://newnoise.tumblr.com/)
a great start to 2011
Albums by:
How to Dress Well
Nicolas Jaar
Josh T Pearson
PJ Harvey
Radiohead
SONGS AND DISCOVERIES THIS YEAR
Tyler the Creator - Yonkers! the whole OFWGKTA thing has got my attention
The new One Nation LP form Hype Williams - The Throning is a great track
The Burial/FourTet/Thom Yorke collab was a great surprise
The new SBTRKT album should be great - Living like I do...nice!
Battles - Ice Cream!
I usually end up spending the first few months of a new year
listening to releases from the previous year but:
Favourite albums (so far):Josh T Pearson, PJ Harvey, Braids, Action Beat, Tim Hecker, Radiohead and Earth
Looking forward listening to: The new Young Widows album, the Burial/Four Tet/Thom Yorke collaboration, The Fen album and EITS's forthcoming record.
oh also
Favourite gig so far this year: Anaïs Mitchell's Hadestown at the Union Chapel earlier this year
I enjoyed The People's Key
but srsly, Okkervil River's new one blows it out the water, in my humble opinion... COUGH (http://jazzmonroe.tumblr.com/post/3853712040). Kinda like Black Sheep Boy, but with the darker production of Goodbye Sweet Dreams off the Roky Erickson collaboration.
Only heard Gazelle Twin recently too... British Fever Ray crossed with These New Puritans, maybe. Her album's streaming in demo form online, good listening. (http://www.elizabethwalling.co.uk/listen.htm)
Then Kurt Vile, Radiohead, PJ Harvey, the usual... Good year so far.
I've been very much enjoying your blog
re: Okkervil. Can't wait for the new album to drop.
:)
Been writing and thinking about 10/10 recently, re Okkervil. Have never done that before. Still not sure if I’m overexcited or onto something... Cannot wait for Will’s St Pancras Church gig this Monday.
Strong words. I'm getting very excited.
I can't go to his solo show i'm afraid, but am at the Heaven show for sure.

Teeth - Shawty [502]
Teeth - Vibrate [Unknown]
S-X - Woooo [Butterz]
How could I forget haha
Amazing!
Probably wrote too much, sorry.
Bands
Damages - hardcore punk from Michigan. Sounds a lot like Give Up The Ghost/Wes Eisold project. It absolutely kills though and the lyrics are suitably tormented as you'd expect. Pretty brutal.
http://www.myspace.com/damageshc
Robocop - grindcore noise stuff from 3 dudes obviously mucking around, but some actual songs in this mess of sound - somewhere. Free download as well.
http://www.grindcorekaraoke.com/album/robocop-ii
Snowing - I've mentioned these dudes before, do really love this album they've released (AND FOR FREE DOWNLOAD!) Decent 90s-style American emo that sounds proper sweaty and passionate. Ex-Street Smart Cyclist as well and they were totes good.
http://countyourluckystars.bandcamp.com/album/i-could-do-whatever-i-wanted-if-i-wanted
The Black Spiders album, 'Sons of the North' is worth getting - it's pretty standard, but what they do rocks hard; got a southern-swagger to it as well.
Also worth checking out:
Such Gold (Set Your Goals speed punk)
Ken MODE (noise-rock hardcore)
The Royal Republic (sounds like the most fun band EVER)
The Joy Formidable (excellent voice)
Daytrader (Latterman-style punk)
Lemuria (just ace)
Amplifier (seriously heavy awesomeness)
Loving that new Battles song btw, tis ace-o.
Gigs
Hardly been to any - saw Dinosaur Pile-Up back in Feb and they were great, as were Japanese Voyeurs, who I don't really like on CD, but were proper grimey and heavy live.
Rob Zombie was pretty great as well.
Yonkers has stood head and shoulders above everything for me
it's been the year of OFWGKTA thus far, and shit's only gonna get crazier when the albums start dropping
other great traxs & records though:
The Smith Westerns - Dye It Blonde
The Go! Team - Back Like 8 Track
XXXY - Ordinary Things
The Strokes - 2/3rds of Angles
Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring For My Halo
Gil Scott-Heron vs Jamie xx - I'll Take Care Of U (probably second to Tyler atm)
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
Toro Y Moi - New Beat
second half of Radiohead's King Of Limbs
Teeel's Amulet - a really nice surprise, lovely little album
The Vaccines - All In White
oh also
Jamie xx's remix of Rolling In The Deep
Josh T Pearson
Radiohead and Tim Hecker have been on pretty solid rotation.
Gig wise Interpol were great last night and I had a fantastic night in some basement bar in Dalston watching Let's Wrestle (whose new record is FANTASTIC)
Albums wise
Records by PJ Harvey, The Go! Team and The Young Knives have been really good so far.
The Radio Dept compilation was also aces.
Josh T Pearson and Cut Copy are on the must listen list to come
Best Songs
Women - Bullfight
The Strokes - Life Is Simple In The Moonlight
Radiohead - Little By Little
Metronomy - The Look
Good start to year
PJ Harvey album was good! (though I'm not sure I love it as much as a lot of people seem to)
REM album was good (though still not great)
Radiohead album was excellent
ELbow album is growing on me (and were awesome live)
James Blake album would be my pick though atm
For songs, Burial Fourt Tet - Ego is AMAZING
James Blake - Wilhelm Scream is on course for song of the year
Radiohead - Seperator blew me away.
Oddly though I haven't really heard lots of actually weird / obscure stuff yet this year. Been fairly mainstream for me so far.
...
Tom Williams & The Boat - Too Slow
Just Handshakes (We're British) - New Adventures In Pop EP
Bright Eyes - The People's Key
British Sea Power - Valhalla Dancehall
Half The Vaccines album
Singles:
Dry The River - New Ceremony
The Decemberists - Don't Carry It All
Elbow - neat little rows
That Naked & Famous song which sounds like Passion Pit/MGMT and is the perfect for the NME tent at Leeds Fest
Gil Scott-Heron vs Jamie xx - I'll Take Care Of U
So far...
a bloody great year of music. I've loved:
Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die
Radiohead - King of Limbs
Vessels - Helioscope
Rival Schools - Pedals
How To Dress Well
Conquering Animal Sound - Kammerspiel
not many singles, though I did love this EP by Autorotation: http://autorotation.bandcamp.com/album/jesus-bolts
not new but new to me discoveries so far:
Sonino, worriedaboutsatan, Blondes, Lullatone, The Winchell Riots
it's been a great year so far, but...
there are three albums that stand way above the rest:
Parts & Labor's 'Constant Future'
William Tyler's 'Behold the Spirit'
and The Mountain Goats 'All Eternals Deck'
Okay, maybe Tim Hecker and Nicolas Jaar. There's a few brilliant songs on the PJ Harvey album, and Josh T Pearson is still working on me.
Fav albums
Destroyer's Kaputt
PJ Harvey's Let England Shake
Kurt Vile's Smoke Rings
Fav pop songs:
Adele's Rolling in the Deep
Lykke Li's Youth Knows No Pain
Best unsolicited email:
Creeping Weeds http://creepingweeds.bandcamp.com/
...someone with more time want to pick this up for review? tis good
Best Japan tribute/donation record ...I'm hoping
The Morning Benders Japan Echo EP
Most looking forward to hearing:
The War on Drugs (great live the other night...really tight)
Most awesome "lost" record:
David Bowie's Toy
So far so fairly good for me
Lots of 7/10 records but few better than that.
Rem, Twilight Singers, Esben and the witch, Cut copy, Gruff Rhys... all very decent but just lacking that something.
Three best records for me so far have been PJ Harvey, Mogwai and Wire. All very good, 8/10 albums I'll probably only grow to love more.
Really enjoyed The Shipments end of year mix tapes and the OFWGKTA compilation too.
If Gang of Four and James Blake were both as good as their highlights they'd be top records. Sadly they're both patchy records with huge highs and lows.
A few good gigs so far with Janelle Monae the highlight.
So far 2011 gets a 7.5 from me.
Best songs?
Probably the awesome 20 minute one on the second CD of Mogwais record in most normal years. However I just can't get over how immense that latest Fever Ray tune was. Very special indeed.
My quarterly mix of newish stuff
is currently going to feature many of these...
Hunx & His Punx - Lover's Lane
Super Melody - I Want Your Blood
Chain Gang Of 1974 - Make My Body
Oblique - Without Making Noise

Lykki Li - Sadness Is A Blessing
FNU Ronnies - Valley Of Wastoids
ANR- Don't Fear The Get Out

Project Jenny, Project Jan - Nadine
Cold Cave - The Great Pan Is Dead
Lia Ices - Little Marriage
Zoey Van Goey - You Told The Drunks I Knew Karate
The KVB - It's Too Late
Telekinisis - Car Crash
2010 has been pretty unbelievable so far
All of these are brilliant
Higuma - Pacific Fog Dreams
Grails - Deep Politics
Tim Hecker - Ravedeath, 1972
Six Organs Of Admittance - Asleep On The Floodplain
Belong - Common Era
Deaf Center - Owl Splinters
Earth - Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light I

Bee Mask - Canzoni Del Laboratorio...
Natural Snow Buildings - Waves Of The Random Sea
And LPs from Grouper, Evan Caminiti, Jon Porras, Alexander Tucker, Mountains, EITS all to look forward to in the next couple of months alone. I really can't remember a year like it...
Higuma's probably the best of those, though
Super deep ambient/shoegaze textures
http://rootstrata.com/release/RS73
agree on Belong - Common Era
really loving that.
Isolée, Tim Hecker, Sandwell District, Earth
Albums and Gigs
PJ Harvey stands out for me as a great one, but Rise Against and Endgame is growing on me. The single and video from that are really powerful.
As for gigs I was able to go to Canadian Music Week in Toronto...
The Canadian Music scene is brilliant much like the UK.
Some great bands played, but the stand out gig for me was by
Your Favorite Enemies in Cabin 5
Awesome stuff...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GikLMqoOfY

an uncool person speaks
The name of the act and the few examples of its work I’ve previously had the misfortune to encounter make me want to beat to death the nearest available trustafarian. Slowly. But ‘Paper Romance’ by Groove Armada is an absolute gem of a single and as good a refutation as any of the jaded fools who continue against all evidence to insist that they don’t make ’em like that any more. Best ignore the silly video with a girl writhing around in her pants. I’ve nothing against girls writhing around in their pants per se, but there’s a time and a place for everything.
Despite the fact that the act has the worst name since Groove Armada, the fact that the title of its album makes me want to hide behind a cushion and the twin facts that the act’s music sounds like it was designed by a computer programmed to distil a checklist of thirty years of indie-cool reference points into thirteen bite-sized chunks and contains not one single original idea, I cannot stop playing Passive Me, Aggressive You by The Naked and Famous. To have so brazenly re-written ‘Time To Pretend’ this soon after the event takes some chutzpah. To have thrown bits of ‘Kids’ into the same song is very cheeky indeed, in the best possible way. But to have made all of the above work is nothing short of genius. I love this record unconditionally, without ruling out the possibility that I’ll have forgotten about it by October.
No danger of that with Forward Russia, who haven’t released anything since 2008 and may well never do so again, thus not technically qualifying for a place in this thread. But I’m slow readers’ group all the way, which must be why it’s taken me until now to recognise that this is comfortably the greatest British guitar band of the last twenty years. Second (and better) album Life Processes available for 49p plus postage last I looked. You’d be a jaded fool not to.
