The National
Suede
Foals
Caribou
My Morning Jacket
Had a feeling that National and Suede would headline
But with 4 headliners does that mean that there is a joint headline act?
I suppose we will find out at 7pm anyway!
weak headliners
but some decent if maintstream stuff down the bill. especially glad to see my morning jacket back in the country!
maybe one of those bands is going to headline the big tent
That would be my guess.
The National headlined that tent last year
This looks really good for an off-the-bat lineup, lots of good stuff there and they always add more interesting stuff as it goes on. A little sad I can't go this year!
Meh
All in all
That looks pretty disappointing to me.
Apart from Deerhunter.
no way
The National, Suede (probably), Foals, Avi Buffalo, Bright Eyes, British Sea Power, Caitlin Rose, Caribou, Crocodiles, Deerhunter, Esben + the Witch, Everything Everything, Fight Like Apes, Glasser, Gold Panda, Jenny and Johnny, My Morning Jacket = great stuff
for an initial announcement it makes the festival look way better than last year
To be fair
I don't recall the initial announcement last year, as I got tickets quite late on. I know when I did see last year's line up I thought it was brilliant, whereas this one just doesn't have as many artists that appeal to me.
Reckon I'll still get a ticket though, and fingers crossed they add more artists that I like, because at the end of the day it's all about me.
First announcement last year
was the three headliners of both main and Arena stages, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Empire Of The Sun, the Horrors (don't remember them playing at all) and Charlotte Gainsbourg. It's basically more as opposed to greater.
they
just pulled the thread from the latitude forums with the 'leak' in it, so it looks even more believable now...
Foals will surely headline the second stage...
Foals and Paulo Nutini with bigger billing that Bright Eyes.
What is the world coming to etc etc
There's only a handful of bands on that list I'd be desperate to see (and some of those I've seen before) but I had a really good time there last year, and some of my favourite bits had nothing to do with bands.
So I'm interested. Very interested.
I'm no fan of Mr Nutini
but he's massively more popular than Bright Eyes.
Even to a Latitude crowd?
It just seems to be a bit... HeartFM.
I can understand it, but I don't have to like it.
latitude is very heart fm / radio 2 friendly
Hmm.
I think there's only so many times I can see The National and Caribou in one year... HOWEVER. I really want to see My Morning Jacket again. Might be between this and EOTR.
Having chosen a year off
it doesn't seem, bar my uncanny knack of finding new ways to miss seeing Foals and Edwyn Collins live at every juncture, I'm missing out on that much. Some eyebrow raising stuff, but not pumped up enough that I'd pay £160 or whatever it is for.
Bellowhead are playing every single festival as far as I can tell.
Who's been before?
Can someone pitch it to me as a general weekend experience? I mean, are there late night discos, is the beer/food cheap, is it a nice location etc. etc?
food and alcohol is standard big festival pricing
you won't generally get a meal for less than a fiver and alcohol is generally £3.50 to £4.00 a pint.
the site is really lovely - the sunrise stage is in the trees at the top of a hill, as is another smaller (theatre i think?) stage there and they have art exhibits in the woods as well.
late night entertainment veers between being pretty good (Mark Lamaar has done a curating thing the last few years and sometimes books good stuff, and there's usually decent stuff at the Sunrise after bands finish as well as a lovely ambience in the woods generally as they hang lights in the trees) but a lot of it is pretty standard 80s/cheese type stuff. i remember walking around one night and hearing that f'king Queen song from Shaun of the Dead three times in three different tents.
the atmosphere is usually pretty relaxed and friendly and a slightly older crowd, although last ytearspectacularly last year with a number of rapes and also hordes of teenagers (presumably because Latitude is the 'safe' festival) milling around and looking bored of everything.
there's plenty to do beside the music as well, the comedy stage is usually top notch and there are literary and poetry and theatre events and stuff.
i'd recommend it over any of the bigger festivals really, i've been three times and aside from a few quibbles with last year that i don't think will repeat this year I had a really good time every year.
oh and it's also pretty hard to get to unless you drive
i've always been lucky as my only friends who drive really like it as well. they run buses and stuff but really who wants to get on a coach with stinky festival people on a monday morning after a weekend of excess?
That bus back to the station in 2009 was horrific
Can't have been as bad as the train ride back to Ipswich.
They bussed us to some middle of nowhere station on the presumption there were quick trains to Ipswich, thus taking the pressure off Ipswich. Needless to say, we waited an hour on the platform, crammed an unsafe number of people onto a two-carriage train, then crawled for an hour an half to Ipswich. Physically painfully, spiritually destroying, after what had been a good weekend.
However, my friend who left really early Monday morning had a flawless trip back, so I'd recommend that.
i
had no issues with the coach back monday morning to London. Nice and easy`
Was nothing to do with the organisation or anything
just my hangover and being in close proximity to lots of smelly festival goers.
not as bad as the train from london to edinburgh afterwards. though on the plus side, nae cunt sat next to me because i smelled so bad
Ah, but
last time I went, on the little minibus to the site from the station, I was sat behind Lucy Porter. The famous person. So...
Isn't this the festival where you're not allowed to take your on booze to the stages with you?
If so, fuck that.
I'll think you'll find this is every single festival over 8,000 capacity
except for Glastonbury
Also that means no My Morning Jacket for EOTR headline slot
:"((
i've just about convinced myself
that they could play as a non-headliner.
If it doesn't happen
then you're going on my list.
just got my ticket
National and Deerhunter. Best things evvaaarrrr!
+AC ATP its allll goood : )

Deerhunter and Esben & The Witch!
you're bit thin on the ground after that, you know a fest is fucked if you can see the most fun to be had after those two headliners is in The Literay Areana: Bristock, Thomas, Sayle, Gorman... maybe you just need rid of Pappy's and you're back on track... Wait! Richard Herring is there too, Tim Key and Saul Williams, good stuff.
Not really a very inspiring line up
even the arts stages seem pretty familiar names.
big up all the artists trying to make it fun though, can't beat a chalenge.
it does tend to be a lot of the same comedy/arts stuff each year
but I guess what a comedian does/can do is a lot more varied to a band.
like say Daniel Kitson doing an early version of his Edinburgh show last year and it being rammed
Can you imagine if a band had tried to play an unfinished version of their new album and nothing else?
That was one of my highlights of last year.
Trip Q&A with Brydon and Coogan
:) x millions.
holla
yep, have been getting really excited recently.
yoohoo
I'm going yeaahh.
Dylan Moran just added to the comedy stage :)
I think all the bands I want are gonna clash like a mofo. Oh well.
Super excited, even if I havent found anyone to go with yet - 100% of my friends either have work commitments or are on holiday. Fucking LAME
I'm going!
whhoaaayeah
every year is fun
it is a fun festival.
this year will be super fun!
in terms of arrival
does it fill up pretty quick thursday? it's still not sold out is it?
a mate wants to go after work Thursday to save his holiday days...am i going to be stuck in some shit area of the site?
Depends what you like.
We camped relatively far from the arena entrance, but still only a ten minute walk or so, and it was amazing, really quiet, really spacious, you could have turned up on Saturday and got a comfortable pitch.
aye its never been a problem
I've camped in the same spot for 4 out of 5 years and its always been the easiest thing to just rock up at mid afternoon on Thursday and start enjoying yourself : )
I am so excited now!!!
I hadn't noticed all this new stuff
looking forward to Joe Dunthorne and Sea of Bees
There's only a few bands I absolutely love
but I'm doing my obsessive thing of going through and listening to all of the bands now, to see what other possible new bands there are for me to love/want to go and see.
are they going to release set times before the festival?
Friday is looking horrible for clashes
I think they will
but maybe not for a couple of days yet. Hope it's soon though, as I'm wanting to try and attempt a proper plan of stuff now.
(belatedly want to show my approval of your Vonnegut name - have recently been having a binge of a whole bunch of his books. Great stuff!)
Secretly really looking forward to bright eyes

No reserve. Go crazy.
:'(
bugger
really wanted to see Yroji Ikeda. Must gawp at Brad though...
oh, only just clips the beginning off of Ikeda. just trek to the other end of the site and catch the next half hour or so...
i guess if you're got to go you've got to go, but i will say ikeda is mindblowing live w/ full a/v stuff going on.
i really loved caribou live last time i saw him, but yeah he tours a lot, and at best he's going to be fun, whereas ikeda will be make you question your very existence (err maybe). i'd just pick depending on how jolly you feel at the time/how jolly you would like to be afterwards tbh.
not too many clashes
My weekend is looking like this
Friday: Avi Buffalo, Yann Tiersen, Deerhunter, Caribou, Bright Eyes, The National
Saturday: Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Villagers, The Walkmen, Dog is Dead, Dels, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Foals
Sunday: Dylan Moran, Adam Buxton, Gold Panda, Crystal Fighters, James Blake
I'm currently planning on:
Friday: Gary Nock, Phantom Band/James Spankie (not sure which), Yann Tiersen, Still Corners, Bright Eyes/Cloud Control, Admiral Fallow/Glasser, The National (wanted to see Cat's Eyes though)
Saturday: Phildel, Villagers, Reverend Billy And The Stop Shopping Gospel Choir, Fight Like Apes
Sunday: Anna Calvi, Treefight For Sunlight, When Saints Go Machine, Sea Of Bees, Clock Opera (although quite want to see Oh Land as well), Lykke Li (but clashes with Hidden Cameras), Eels
and I think that Braids might be playing too, but aren't announced yet? Hope so anyhow.
ta!
on which day is that?
thanks again
I'm driving up from London on Friday morning. Here's hoping I can get there in time then...
balls
I just hope it'll be dry on Thursday when I put my tent up
I might go and buy a gazebo.

someone give me a lift from london friday evening? ta.
Yeah, BBC and Metcheck are differing quite a lot, but there's definitely going to be quite a bit of rain at some point.
In fairness...
...the forecast last year was fairly dire in the week leading up to the festival and then it turned out right nice. East Anglian weather is notoriously difficult to predict.
/blue sky thinking...
the rain
WHY :(
goddammit
i'm going friday night > all day saturday > leaving sunday.
it's gonna rain all day saturday isn't it?!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/4186?area=Halesworth
http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/dayforecast.asp?zipcode=Halesworth&day=2
fuckshitbollocks
Everywhere you go...
...you always bring the weather with you.
STAY OUT OF SUFFOLK LOMAX!!!
this may well be true.
going to My Morning Jacket at Somerset House on Sunday night and it's due to slash it down there as well.
although again, BBC and Metcheck are different
http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/dayforecast.asp?zipcode=WC2R%201LA&day=3 = sun
http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/2574?area=WC2R = rain
WTF.
basically
Metcheck puts a sunny spin on all the BBC's shitstorms
I just took a wander through Liverpool Street Station...
...at lunch and it is absolutely teeming with folk on their way to Latitude. None of them looked particularly equipped for thunderstorms.
Hang on,
there was another rape? What on earth is it with that festival?
I got to interview Caitlin
after her performance, she is super lovely, we ended up just geeking off about music, she is a massive music geek, the interview made my weekend.
was awesome
arrived Friday evening, left Sunday morning - great time. Didn't really see many bands but highlights include...
Buzzcocks (well worth queuing in the rain!)
The National
My Morning Jacket amazing early evening set - could have watched them all night (they were even better at Somerset House last night!)
People just generally having fun and smiling when Paolo Nutini was playing.
Foals destroyed the tent Saturday night.
Forgetting The Walkmen were on then going over to the tent for the last four songs - which were typically awesome.
Amazing comedians - Jon Richardson. Phil Nichol followed by Jason Byrne for two crazy sets Saturday afternoon. Doc Brown was suprisingly really good too.
Stumbling across Cerebal Ballzy.
Guest camping.
Bit of rain didn't really spoil things - wasn't as muddy as I thought. Had to pay a £30 "compulsory donation" despite being on the guestlist, which was a bit weird. Didn't say who the charity was. The promoter I guess.
The £30 donation isn't compulsory.
If you choose not to pay it, you just get an ordinary wristband and therefore can't use the guest facilities. They did have a few posters up at the guest entrance regarding the system and how much money they raised for various charities - I think the main one was Water Aid.
I was close...Action Aid, not Water Aid.
http://www.festivalrepublic.com/charity/
wow
that totally wasn't explained at the gate. the bloke was a bit of a dick actually and was just like "you'll have to go to the cash point". Didn't mind though, the campsite (and private entrance/exit) was great, and it's only £30. I was just a bit perplexed by the "compulsory" donation. surely that's a straight up charge, not a donation?!
all festivals do charity donations for guestlist
ranging from £20-£50 in my experience.
better than paying £200 and none of it going to charity :)
Spent most of my time in the poetry tent
And all I can say is John Berkavitch was so good he caused a power outage and it all went dark and it was late and amazing.
Key was amazing.
Cerebral Ballzy were lol.
So many great acts in the poetry tent, shame I somehow managed to miss Linton Kwesi Johnson, the man's been something of an idol for me for a long time.
Yeah, The National slayed it. Suede were also great. And Braids.
It was great!
and...
I smell bad.
The gazebo held strong. £16.99 well spent.
I feel like I saw and did a massive amount, so I'll keep my review brief with some key awards:
Highlight of the festival: The National making a massive headline slot feel at the end, like an intimate acoustic singalong.
Beard of the festival: E from Eels, and all of his band.
Song of the festival: James Blakes' Limit to Your Love has been in my head all the way home.
Discovery of the festival: Caitlin Rose was pretty awesome, as were Braids.
Celebrity encounter of the weekend: Arthur Darvill, aka Rory from Doctor Who. Long story, but he was a very nice chap.
Non-musical moment of the festival: Buzzcocks or Dylan Moran.
Food of the festival: Roast dinner in a Yorkshire pudding wrap, served with a pot of roast potatoes and gravy.
Disappointment of the festival: Iron and Wine playing an hour of dull jams in an inward facing circle.
These awards were sponsored by MUD.
Also, special mention for Bellowhead for being the most fun set of live music I've seen in ages.
From hipsters to middle aged lecturers, everyone was loving it.
And did anyone get into the Trip Q&A? If so, you either queued like a bastard, and I salute you, or you cheated, and you're a prick.
I was there, and I didn't queue or cheat.
The trick was to get down there about 90 minutes before it was due to start. That did however mean I had to sit through some fairly bizarre Russian cartoons about butterflies soundtracked by a live folk band.
Fair enough, I count that as queuing like a bastard.
You must have gone to the film tent as soon as the arena opened? I went to watch Braids, and left early to get to the film arena with about 40mins to spare, but it was clear that it wasn't happening. About the only thing I wanted to see that I missed, though I saw some quite good comedy in the meantime.
Not sure what your point is there.
Ah, sorry, I thought you were being snarky about the term hipsters or whatever.
There was definitely a smattering of Shoreditch twats among the yummy mummys and public school kids celebrating the end of their GCSEs.
I don't think I'd ever buy a Bellowhead CD, but in terms of energy, fun, and musicianship, I'd definitely recommend them as a live act. There's just not enough country dancing in alternative music today.
All the Hipsters got washed away
in the rain. True story. Thursday/Friday loads of Hipsters. Saturday, rain came Hipsters disappeared. Muddy denim shirts.... not a good look.
Wow.
That was some weekend. A million times better than last year for me. I think the crowd were much more Latitude friendly - unlike last year's hoardes of Inbetweeners that were attracted by Vampire Weekend and Florence.
Never experienced a problem all weekend. I was much drunker than last year, but I think I actually saw more bands! Highlghts include:
The National. They owned it.
Foster The People - I never realised how good that rather average album is when played live. Fantastic performers and great sound - if a little bit Jake Shears-y.
Jason Byrne in the comedy tent getting two lads to share his pants with him, then triumphing depsite a power cut.
'Moving Stuff Around' in the Cabaret tent - did anybody else see this on Sunday?
The Walkmen.
Baby Guinnesses.
The barman who gave me £25 worth of drinks for £7.
Everything. It really was immense. Buzzing now still, despite the 5 hour drive home!
Shush
Vampire Weekend were great last year.
awesome weekend
GOOD THINGS:
The National's amazing acoustic ending and playing Secret Meeting and About Today and generally being brilliant
Braids - wasn't a huge fan of the album before but they were excellent live and I liked it when they all had a big hug before they started
Caribou - Sun was fucking amazing
Gold Panda
James Blake - couldn't believe he played CMYK live and his DJ set was good afterwards even though hardly anyone was there and he finished with Purple Rain
Dylan Moran
Pure Pie
When the bar people forgot to charge us for the cups so we got free money when we took them back
The DJ on Thursday who played
NOT SO GOOD THINGS:
The cunts camped next to us who randomly ganged up on me and my friend and tried to fight us on Thursday and spent the rest of the weekend trying to sell us MDMA
Fucking Tuborg
When they just took away the drinking water taps from our campsite with no explanation and there were only like two taps for a campsite for hundreds of people
People talking over James Blake, I literally could barely hear the first song because of the two guys in front of me facing away from the stage and shouting about how they needed a piss
*The DJ on Thursday who played the Jungle Book song and Bring the Noise
Caribou
So it was a good show by them. I saw them at Glasto and Sun was the closer and was unbelievable. left me speechless
Did people really rate that set by the National?
I thought it was a bit shitty compared with last year.
They turned the water off because it was identified as being full of bacteria. I think that the idea behind turning it off was to make sure people didn't die of cholera. Cheers.
Really? We were told there had just been a major fault with supply,
which was a bit lame when they seemed really proud of their new mains-plugged water as part of some long-term lease for the festival. Was pretty painful when Friday was baking hot and the only water was paper cups being handed out. Still, by Sunday, I never wanted to see water again.
Music wise bar The Walkman,Eels and Submotion Orchestra
It was a shocker of a festival. Weak line up mixed with a teenage/parent crowd. The alleged assault thing was pretty bad as well seeing as I was only 2 tents away from it.
enjoyable weekend
Caribou, The National, Hypnotic Brass Orchestra, Foals and Everything Everything my top moments
Enjoyed Yans Tiersen, The Walkmen, Lykke Li, Eeels
Not so keen on the crowd though, small children everywhere, tons of public school teenagers!!
Such a good time.
Good things included:
Finally getting to see The National and being about a foot away from Matt Berninger at one point. Total fangirl moment.
Foals, apart from the excitable children shoving everyone around near the front.
Briefly meeting Mark Watson after his set.
Staying at the Sunrise stage all afternoon on sunday and seeing Caitlin Rose, the Bees and a bit of Gold Panda in between drinking vodka and chatting with many good people.
Caribou finishing with Sun.
Dylan Moran.
Meeting the most well-spoken drug dealer ever, i regretted not being able to afford any geahhh from him.
Getting free fish after Suede, when i'd completely run out of food back at the campsite.
Not so good things:
Iron and Wine were a bit of a disappointment - i knew his live sets tend to stretch songs out and explore them, but i wasn't expecting every song to feature an extended jazz freakout. The massive black clouds rolling in over the stage at the end of his set were pretty awesome though.
Our gazebo being a piece of shit and getting completely fucked by the weather.
Missing British Sea Power through my own incompetence.
i rubbed his beard!
that was my festival highlight!
Pretty good weekend but the music line-up could definitely have been better.
Good: Caribou being amazing on Friday afternoon. Sun was brilliant.
The Walkmen playing a really good set to a fairly big audience.
Jason Byrne working through a power cut and making me cry with laughter.
British Sea Power being British Sea Power.
Kele being surprisingly good on Sunday afternoon. His album is poor but it played well live.
Gold Panda getting everyone dancing in the Sunrise Arena.
Mark Watson spending most of his set in the audience, having lots of fun with the sign interpreter he was given.
Ghostpoet being my favourite thing all weekend.
Bad: Deerhunter were a little disappointing, ending their set abruptly, not engaging with the audience at all and not playing Nothing Ever Happened.
Iron and Wine were just plain boring which is a massive shame.
Everyone else seemed to love Dylan Moran but he seemed unfocused to me and I was left slightly underwhelmed.
Saw half an hour of Hurts. What a load of rubbish.
I was a little disappointed with Ghostpoet
Cash and Carry Me Home was pretty good though. I thought Deerhunter were great too but they did end a little suddenly
