Apples In Stereo
Of Montreal etc
Then I'd have to go and I really don't want to
he would have some e6 bands there (who make varied and joyous music), some big league indie names, and the loads of mental stuff like the throat singing, world music, experimental sound collage stuff he is into. opposite of dull
dull is obviously subjective, but in the context of criticising an atp dull is usually refering to the samey line up and repeat appearances of bands, I really dont think jeff's atp will be dull in that sense, he has hugely eclectic taste so it wont be samey and will have stuff that is quite un atp like, and he has connections to some big hitters which is also necessary because you need some big names to get excited about and too much of the weird stuff would also get samey (im looking at you godspeed atp). I geniunely think this will be the most enjoyable atp for some years
but its about time Calvin Johnson curated one of these!
i think you're talking about calvin harris.
He would get all the girl bands to play.
be radiohead or nick cave...
That's the most stupid thing I've heard all day.
but they're too expensive to book. Still, a Radiohead ATP would be quite amazing, I'm sure.
who probably wouldn't watch any of the other acts.
I'm not 100% sure about that, though. The whole style of it and the cost would make people think it through.
I would like that very much. I need to go to ATP soon.
Although not sure how the line-up would shape up. Probably be Deerhunter or someone of that ilk.
I doubt it will be him.
imagine radiohead is very unlikely. Still, they could be doing it for love, not money. They do things like that. and the timing coincides...
Not in terms of how much they'd charge or whether they think it would be beneath them, but rather because they have so many fans that it would sell out immediately and be full of no one else but them.
Considering that they'd be playing to a venue with a tiny capacity (for them), tickets would be going on e-bay for £500 quid each, easily.
For entirely selfish reasons i'd like it to be someone else. Otherwise the money i've already spent (and will continue to have to spend) to see them in NJ will seem a touch over excessive and very hard to justify.
before that carefully delayed announcement was released.
Not that i would change any of my plans, i am very very excited about the whole NJ voyage.
I may have misinterpreted the tone of this morning's ATP statement.
It did say 'soon' though.
I assumed it meant today too.
I did think it may not be today but was hoping it would be. Kinda hoping it's someone crap, as I can't afford it at all atm
but I reckon sufjan would be a good choice, he is a big enough crowd puller and has a lot of connections, but to artists that are a bit outside of the normal atp pool
and scott hall please.
between the merch and the pavillion stage.
to weave the wwe/atp dream together for us. i mean, everyone loves the wrestling right? yes. and everyone loves atp? correct. it's staring us in the face people.... aidan moffat for wwe champion.
Where's the fucking data patch cunt? Please.
failing that, Pat Nevin. a weekend of 5-a-side with a couple of bands on the sunday afternoon.
make it happen atp.
and couldn't stop our team from losing convincingly?
IT WAS GREAT.
Losing convincingly is second nature sadly :(
Have they done it before?
I've only just finshed paying for my May ATP and I'll Be Your Mirror (London) tickets. Hope it's no-one too amazing that it sells out stupidly fast.
If anything, it's a bit late to be announcing it!
Mark E Smith
I'm not voting for those first two.
Surely this is far too early??!
every year. I remember being at the Fans ATP in May 2007 and they announced Portishead as the December curators on the final day, then they did them in April, now it's February. I genuinely have no idea what I'll be doing in December, so unless it's somebody stellar (Sufjan? SFA?) then I'll be leaving it.
*Sam from Youthmovies was running around Holnicote shouting it
They have a pretty big following. Merely wishful thinking on my part, mind.
it probably is wishful thinking but i'm enjoying the hell out of it...
I am absolutely skint and am really hoping to hit one of these, after the disapointment of the AC one (not a criticsim of the festival, just not a band I like)
Would Dirty Projectors do a good weekend?
My wish-list would be for Trail of Dead, David Gedge, Luke Haines (Auteurs reform!), Mac Macaughan, Venetian Snares, Bjork - Even if Damon Albarn curated ATP or even a Meltdown that would be an interesting line-up!
They normally get someone who'll choose a line-up that's a bit metally / noisy / psychedelic / experimental. Most of the suggestions in this thread are kind of on the indie-pop end - possible curators for a May ATP, but less likely for a Nightmare Before Christmas. Though I suppose if they're doing 2 weekends again, one may be more poppy (like Bowlie last year).
My guess would be something more along the lines of Sunn O))), Swans, Julian Cope or possibly Liars or Battles at a push.
are a possibility, after they couldn't do release the bats.
you're quite right it's a 'Nightmare before Christmas'. It's very unlikely to be 99% of the suggestions on this thread thank christ. Swans would be wonderful.
but if that's true, how do B&S fit in last year?!
with the "Nightmare Before Christmas" beardfests.
i dunno if they're doing one or two this year. there was talk about switching to a 1 in May, 2 in December schedule, which is a shame as when the weather works it's really nice there in May...
Nightmare Before Xmas, it was a Bowlie anniversary thing. The NBC was curated by Godspeed, and previous years have been people like Portishead, Thurston Moore, Mike Patton, My Bloody Valentine. It'll be somebody like that again this year since NBC is the only December one.
It's definitely true that most of suggestions in this thread would be better for May. Even SFA, who I mentioned, wasn't really a guess - they don't fit with NBC at all, I was just trying to think of somebody who I like enough and that I'd be confident of them picking a good line-up to justify buying a ticket ten months in advance.
kraftwerk (though BH said he'd want Florian S back in band)
wes anderson? (mentioned before, but poss more likely for US event)
Seems a little late for Kraftwerk to start angling for it, especially on DiS
remeber for the fans ATP, Kraftwerk were too expensive.
maybe not as curators.
would be as expensive as pavement/my bloody valentine i reckon.
i think, though as much as i love them i'm not sure how good they'd be as curators- maybe a bit insular. Would be an awesome don't look back act though!
...surely it's either Coldplay or U2.
^ guffaws ^
The dream would be Bjork. Aphex... Yeah, that'd be sweet too.
failing that, Suge Knight
but our last show is actually Friday April 1st at The Windmill in Brixton http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=126390810759689
Would be happy to curate though.
I'd spend the entire budget on flying over Guided By Voices and Archers Of Loaf. I'd then get loads of old British bands to reform and play for free like Seafood, Warm Jets, and Bros.
then i'm there
at least not where you'd think.
What's an ATP member? Why am I not one? I don't understand anymore.
JEFF MANGUM (from Neutral Milk Hotel)
THE OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL
YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS
THE MAGIC BAND
THE RAINCOATS performing The Raincoats (debut LP)
A HAWK AND A HACKSAW
THE APPLES IN STEREO
If this is it i am so there.
Magnum exciting... rest are fine, not THE most out there announcements. Still - GOOD START ETC
Get Guided By Voices and Archers Of Loaf and Sebadoh involved too!!!
Yesss a tuneful ATP!
maybe just a song or two?
I know the announcement says solo acoustic set, but aren't most of the other NMH members in various other bands on the bill??
producer in The Apples in Stereo
others sometimes in The Olivia Tremor Control
I'd be surprised if he headlined solo!
if they did a secret full band set and you didnt find out about it.
otherwise that's what it would be (as in Neutral Milk Hotel rather than Jeff Mangum).
2 December ATPS then?
Second one on sale in 2 weeks. Wasn't expecting 2 this December.
They were pretty boring at The Fans Strike Back...
The room was pretty much empty by the end of it though.
that is all. i'll be calm in a moment, promise.
NMH! RADIOHEAD! ELECTRELANE!
So tempted to sell AnCo tickets to pay for this one. Terrible approach, but priorities and all.
Lineup so far is okay but not purchase-worthy for me.
But why can't they announce them both at the same time so we can compare and contrast without missing the chance of an early bird? I think, what with it being feb, we could have waited a fortnight and had them both announced at the same time.
Regardless, Mangum and Superchunk is really fantastico.
Don't want to be accused of whinging, but the same happens for every double ATP with the reason generally being that they weren't ready in time and they would if they could. Starting to seem less likely.
Sometimes leads to mistaken choices, like buying earlybirds for Godspeed when ultimately preferring the Belle & Sebastian line up announced afterwards.
Nevertheless this is a great line up so far.
But yes, no good reason they couldn't do them at the same time, they just don't want to cause it boosts ticket sales to stagger them.
Belle and Sebastian ATP announced 26/03/2010
Godspeed ATP announced 09/04/2010
It seems to say arrange by email - is this only once tickets have gone on sale?
seperate to the tickets thing, deposit schemes seem to be in house (but they add the fees anyway i think)
I can get my deposit tickets today then? Got an email that suggests so
it'll be a wegottickets-style e-ticket thing, so when you get to butlins give your name and your chalet stuff/wristbands will be there for you to pick up. you pay rest of ticket money in september or something.
disappointingly small crowd though, I think everyone was watching that film where Vincent Gallo gets a blowjob.
They're not calling this one the Nightmare Before Christmas so hopefully the other weekend will be a bit more experimental/noisy. Gutted to have missed the Godspeed one last year.
How many times are ATP going to ask Jeff Mangum to curate ATP before they realise that what fans of ATP really want is a weekend of unknown dubstep acts?
the absolute best thing about ATP is that it's a weekend of bands you know and bands you don't.
which, thankfully, ATP never is. curators for the last year:
May 1: Matt Groening
May 2: Pavement
December 1: Godspeed You! Black Emperor
December 2: Belle & Sebastian
they can't be arsed trying to please the unpleasable
AC is very very unlikely for me, so if the other weekend isn't noisy fun then i'll have to do this one maybe. can't see it being 100% my cup of tea despite liking NMH/JM but it's always fun anyway
I absolutely hate that word, but this line up is pretty...
Has there ever been an ATP where most of the line up didn't consist of bands from North America or Scotland?
that I go to 0 ATPs. Wish I could go to Animal Collective.
here's hoping Jeff's professed love of Boredoms and Robery Wyatt saves the day
unlikely. I hope he does decide to do gigs again but Butlins is no place for a Wyatt comeback.
nothing on Youtube sadly. I was at this last year though.
He was on the bill but I assumed he'd play some trumpet. When he actually started singing I nearly did a man cry. Maybe you're right. If he's popping up here and there to do vocal performances then maybe a proper live show is imminent. I can't imagine for a second it would be at ATP but if it was I'd be really pissed off.
that's what happens when you get old.
and take pictures of each other on their generic smartphones. No flippin way. The only way Wyatt can play ATP is if he does some shows in proper music venues first, anything else would be a travesty. Don't know why I'm getting so worked up. He 'aint playing.
i desperately want to see him but not sure I can afford 170 pounds for this
ATP don't seem to tend to get people on exclusivity deals so you can bet there will, at the absolute minimum be some London shows.
i thought as he plays so rarely this might be a one off thing
But seeing him in that Centre Stage, up to three times, with proper good fans and no London mega-chat is worth the ticket price already.
And I suspect Superchunk were partly booked on the strength of their surprisingly MASSIVE gig at Primavera last year. They are going to blaze the mainstage.
The Pavement ATP was announced on 7th October and the first Pavement London date was announced on 20th October. So...maybe just maybe there will be some announcement in the middle of next week?
Stop being negative Nellies.
and I don't think Superchunk have either, and if so it was probably about 10 years ago. Apart from the Raincoats and the Magic Band don't think any of the other bands have played any of the last 10 ATP's.
I know you're just trolling but this is a stupid argument anyway. If you don't like the lineup then just don't go. It's not like Mangum has to select a lineup of bands that have never played before.
Reading festival seems to have the same bands again and again but no one seems to care about that.
Who's doing weekend two?
Deerhoof vs evil?
Deerhoof chose 20 bands
EVIL decides the rest
Would be good headliners and that's who I'm going to go for. I've been correct the last 2 years saying Pavement and Jeff Mangum before either had reformed so am on something of a roll with my predictions
are a good shout, Battles maybe too. Both would pick great lineups I'm sure.
i honestly can't think of a better (less cringeworthy) word, but the previous nightmares have been curated by mike patton/melvins, mars volta and my bloody valentine to name just three...
if they booked jeff mangum and tv on the radio atps i would argue that they're not splitting the crowd in the same way they did with bowlie/gy!be.
really hope this continues to develop nicely, and that it doesn't sell out too quickly (surely not that many people in the real world know who Jeff Mangum is, right?). Haven't been to an ATP in 2 years but I'm dead keen on this one.
