The 'Trumpet of Death' is a nickname given to a variety of edible black mushroom that is normally found in North America. However, it is in the rich, fertile soil of Leeds’ underground music scene where you can also find Trumpets of Death, and these Trumpets are ready to launch their brand new album Teeth + Teeth = Teeths on Coventry-based Tin Angel Records.
Using amorphous instrument sounds, drawing from a eclectic range of influences, esoteric and unpredictable though not devoid of humour, the four-piece comprised of Ben Wetherill (with a widely-revered solo album, 2008’s Laura, under his belt), Karl D’Silva, Laura Wetherill, and Alastair Neilson (brother of Trembling Bells’ Alex), have created an unconventional avant-rock sound that is based around Wetherill's high and tremulous tenor voice, shifting and experimental song structures, propulsive rhythms, noise jazz and free-form melodic experimentation.
The band worked meticulously in the studio to create the unnerving, tense wall of sound that will draw the listener into Teeth + Teeth = Teeths - a densely layered and dynamic record that demands repeated listens in order to fully unravel and appreciate its full drama and cinematic scope.
