unfortunately it's the american version.
hope he curates chrimbo atp or something
All this mean.s is that it will cost me a whole lot more £££ or rather $$$
There is no way i can miss this.
and would assume any come back show would be the first of many to be announced in due course, but with mangum I dunno it could be a genuine one off, im tempted
i wouldn't even consider flying round the world at great expense. I just feel that if this was a one off and i missed it, i would never forget i had the chance.
he's touring Europe in the aumtumn too
it's fun to do bad things like rhyme about handguns
an opportunity to stalk Bruce Springsteen and Jeff Mangum at the same time? asijdsfdsfo;k
just sayin', like...
i've always said i'd pay a small fortune to see him, but there's no way i can afford to go to America this year.
i don't have much hope of a tour atm either, all his surprise appearances have been in or around NY.
very, very tempting
The new venue looks pretty cool though-http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.exit109.com/~mstevens/Panoramas/pan7.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.exit109.com/~mstevens/panoramas.html&usg=__EndmtCHC7m79mZyAl8u_TIUN32E=&h=2457&w=6696&sz=2399&hl=en&start=24&zoom=1&tbnid=ze_vQnayvhDrDM:&tbnh=70&tbnw=192&ei=pending&prev=/images%3Fq%3DConvention%2BHall%2Basbury%2Bpark%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG%26biw%3D1016%26bih%3D626%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:10,795&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=526&vpy=387&dur=464&hovh=70&hovw=192&tx=130&ty=52&oei=JgtATeTXBZKwhAfLh8mlAw&esq=3&page=3&ndsp=12&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:24&biw=1016&bih=626
What exactly is an I'll Be Your Mirror event, and how is it different from an ATP event? Is there no ATP:NY this year then?
ie, no accomodation. there's one in Tokyo (w/ GY!BE) and one in London (also Portishead) this summer, and then this.
Just booked my tickets. Cheers
but now that it's no longer at Kutshers I'm not sure as that was part of the attraction. Heard great things about that place.
Might check out more of NMH to see if it's worth going for Jeff Mangum. I know everyone on here loves them but somehow I missed them.
European dates confirmed
Well, they played them in the Pizza Hut once. Nearly the same.
(please let them/him be doing the Xmas 11 one, would be so perfect)
first DFA 1979 and now this, 2011 is shaping up to be amazing
Might try to get to one of those.
Now everywhere I see it's Mangum. Weird.
FOR FUCK'S SAKE, HOLLY, IT'S MANGUM, NOT MAGNUM. Jesus.
Please please please don't book his own headline show at Koko though. Please. In fact I'm struggling to think of a venue big enough for the demand that would work. Royal Festival Hall perhaps?
Is it going to be with a NMH style band or just him on his own?
ten years ago this would have blown my mind. It'd be cool if these new dates promised all new material, particularly since he hasn't released a record since 2001, otherwise how many more times do you need to hear an 'iyyy luurrrrve you jeeeeesuss chrsiyyyyst!' whine?
but, especially after reading that 'The AWL' link (though obviously it was kiiinda tongue in cheek) I still don't get how obsessed some people are. Aeroplane is an amazing album, but I don't quite see how it could really MEAN so much to someone, y'know. How it could actually make someone cry...it's just acousticy shambolic indie stuff with amazing songwriting.
its never made me cry, but i have NO IDEA why i like it so much. i just do.
If there was ever a singer in the "indie scene", for want of a better phrase, that sings like he means it, it's Jeff Mangum. I'm not really sure what a lot of it actually means, but he really means it! I've choked up at Two Headed Boy part II a couple of times. I've tried to learn it to play at solo gigs, but I have never played it as there is always the nagging thought that I might burst into tears at the bit where it goes "AND WHEN WE BREAK WE WAIT FOR OUR MIRACLE ... GOD IS A PLACE WHERE SOME HOLY SPECTACLE LIES...". Just the way he sings it. Or the way you have to sing it. Hard to explain.
don't think i'm a fan anymore
He has the kind of reputation that can only be tarnished. Whatever.
Reunions/reactivations generally seem to go about:
20% - rather good
20% - satisfying in a nostalgic way
60% - shitter than it was in your head
even if the shows were shit, nostalgia would make them out to be legendary, and the balance of the universe would be restored
If he goes on Jimmy Fallon we're gonna have problems.
A Hawk and a Hacksaw have been added to the bill. A Hawk and a Hacksaw features NMH's drummer...
rather than just a nostalgia-fest of 13 year old songs. I think that would upset me. I guess I mean I'm hoping for a Swans-style comeback rather than a Pixies/Pavement etc. job.
I recall reading in the Aeroplane 331/3 book that he was saying things before he disappeared along the lines of how he'd like to be a kinf of Robert Wyatt figure, going off the radar for years and years and then returning with a load of awesome new material. So I mean, it *could* happen...
Seems like a troubled guy coaxed out of retirement for some financial security
real life is depressing
Got the three day and the Monday show. So excited.
Now i just need to figure out how i'm going to fund this voyage...
