That synth in the back definitely does. I'm liking it though; it has that same tendancy to mutate which made Seek Magic such an exciting listen.
Looking forward to the second album.
I'm just glad he didn't quit like so many people speculated last year, Seek Magic has become one of my fav albums ever.
definitely NOT liking it. Lasted about a minute on the song
...as it's just after about a minute in that the song completely kicks off.
Wonderful stuff, effortlessly shifting and sliding into new ideas and styles with seamless and thrilling transitions. Exactly what I want from Memory Tapes, and if it's an indication of what the next album has in store, I'm excited!
but then it all goes a bit generic indie pop... I loved the album cause there were quite a few more ambient moments, but this is a bit too POP for me.

But...like a few people it seems, ever since Hawke mentioned it would be a "pop" album, I have worried it wouldn't be significantly less subtle than seek magic.
With The Antlers/Wld Beasts' new "electro" records comng out soon, t seems the best new(ish) acts of 2009 are conspiring to eventually produce the same record (to paraphrase a pitchfork comparison of sigur ros and radiohead some years ago).
