I personally began with Death to the Pixies, the compilation, then went onto Doolittle, then Surfer Rosa. To be fair in this instance the comp was pretty damn good at breaking me in, but if you're an album kinda guy then Doolittle is first up.
Just work chronologically I'd say.
By reccomendation from a friend I'm giving DOolittle a try and really enjoying it. Will take your advice next Charliepanayi, cheers.
i mean, really? come on..
seriously, a lot of people consider Trompe their finest hour, a lot consider it to be Surfa Rose... by the same token people also consider it to be Doolittle or Bossanova.
bossanova was my first pixies album, and it completely put me off them for at least 3 years
it's a great album. It may not (arguably) be the best Pixies album. It might even (arguably) be the worst Pixies album. But it's still a Pixies album — by which I mean it still rates at least an 8.5.
and you only had one shot at convincing him of the pixies' greatness, is bossanova the album you'd use? no.
seriously, though, m-dizzle doesn't seem to need any convincing.
I'd probably start with Sufer Rosa since it's so much more accessible, but probably the one that stands up least well to repeated listens. Trompe Le Monde on the other hand I'm still hearing new stuff in there to this day. I'd say it was their best but Bossanova's got the surf thing going for it which pushes it over the top
Probably my favourite Pixies album.
fair enough, personal opinion, but you still don't go round saying 'well if ever there was a band where it doesn't matter where you start, it's oasis!' you have to be a bit responsible about these things and look at the bigger picture. a lot of people don't like bossanova for good reason, but you won't find many people who have bad things to say about surfer rosa
which freaked me out,but made me wanna hear more. I was actualyl at school when Trompe Le Monde came out, and a lot of my pixie-buddies hated it and so, being a nipper, so did i! BUT it's now my favourite album by them by a LONG way actually, followed by a Surfer Rosa / Come On Pilgrim double album Ive got. I still love Bossanova, but weirdly enough I'm a bit bored of Doolittle. I chaneg my fave every few years or so, they're all blindingly awesome albums anyway! OOH OOH - Get the BBC sessions too! That is SICK!
Doolittle -> Surfer Rosa/Come On Pilgrim -> Bossanova -> Trompe Le Monde
I would highly recommend this order.
Although I possibly favour Trompe Le Monde over Bossanova just slightly. All essential though. The B-Sides collection is well worth your time too.
to all the replies.
but still pretty good.
for me they are nowhere near as good as Pavement and Sonic Youth. I would get Come on Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa and Doolittle and not bother with the last two albums.
I haven't bothered with the last two. Maybe someday if I feel I need more I'll get them, but I doubt that will ever happen.
Trompe is an awesome album! get involved...
So maybe that then? But if you've already got to Doolittle then you're doing fine
You can get through their entire discography in about two and a half hours. As long as you start with something that isn't Trompe Le Monde you're fine.
dive in, get wet.
I BOSSANOVA WIT' YA
but for Pixies water wings go Doolittle. And try and at least once hear Pixies At The BBC.
once you're filled up on pixiesque goodness check out Kim Deal's band the Pixies, start with Last Splash.
with a boittle of red for company.
Their most abrasive, but also their most pop album(s). Perfect and they never bettered it.
"which is better: Surfer Rosa or Doolittle?" debate.
(Hint: the answer's Doolittle)
it'd be their best album by a mile.
I've only ever listened to it as part of Surfer Rosa/Come On Pilgrim
I used to not rate Surfer Rosa very highly but then I started listening to just that part of the CD, leaving off Come On Pilgrim and I started enjoying it much more.
That's not to say that I don't rate Come On Pilgrim, but the two lumped together as one album is just too much for me, whereas Doolittle is the perfect length — and, indeed, perfect in every way.
its called Surfer Rosa.
don't bother starting with a best of. As Stevesomenumbers said above, you can get through their entire back catalogue in about 2 and a half hours, plus both Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are widely hailed as classic albums, which you'll be wanting to listen to in their entirety anyway.
Just pick one of their albums and go for it (keeping in mind that some people don't rate Bossanova, and even Trompe le Monde, all that highly). If you like it, you'll be straight onto the next and through their back catalogue in no time.
Normally on these threads I just want to shout BUY THE Best Of/Singles/whateveritscalled REALLY LOUDLY. I love a good Best Of.
T'Pixies are one of very few bands where I'd not recommend one.
means the jury is out... because it's all strong.
Anyone who says otherwise is a try-hard indie bellend.
Then Rosa/Pilgrim, then the rest. Get the B-sides album too, it's a belter.
be like shoving your face in a delicious cake.
I don't think I've found someone who really dislikes / hates them online or in real life.
