Could be worse
Howlin' Wolf knew how to title an album.
Love that album.
I've heard maybe a dozen of these (there are a couple I think I might have listened to once but it's been a while). Pretty good list.
75.mclusky < mclusky do dallas >2002
I really pity anyone who hasn't heard this!
Still, some good albums in there, even if the title is misleading. Nice to see The For Carnation and Jarcrew in there.
Are we playing that game?
If so, me = 21 iirc!
I've got 25 of these
I think it's a pretty decent list
Missed one - it's 26
yay for clor
this is awesome
there are a few duds for sure
the guy from Metronomy
nah way!
Chick Corea is decent. The first 2 Return to Forever albums are pretty ace. Having said that, he has done some pretty terrible stuff as well (The tune 'Bud Powell' for one)
This'll be nothing but great for the 14 year old who picks this up and tries to listen to every album on there...
Guess thats the idea.
I really don't understand what you're getting at here
as that's typically the point of lists.
there's a lot of stuff on this i haven't heard, and i'm not a 14 year old, thanks.
not what I'm saying.
fair enough. i originally read it in an 'obviously i've heard everything on here, but this might be useful to someone who hasn't been exposed to music' kind of way. which would have been a bit wanky.
love the whole "only 14 year olds buy the NME!" thing
anyone know what their actual main demo is?
Yup. It's 14 year olds.
Sorry.
actually no, thinking about it.
14 year olds don't tend to do much print media (in my experience) but they look at the nme online site a lot.
Who buys the actual physical magazines I have no idea.
i used to buy the NME when i was 14, definitely
stopped when i was about 15/16
that's the best top 100 list the NME will ever print
Indeed.
It's an excellent list.
The albums I've heard from it are nearly all sublime.
Picked it up today, very impressed
not least because the NME is being edited by someone who liked Clor. Nice to see The For Carnation getting some love from Mogwai and a page of Kurt Cobain recommending Shonen Knife, the Wipers and Half Japanese to a whole next generation. Hopefully it still gets sales and they can keep on putting the decent music that their writers obviously care about into the magazine rather than the kinds of shit that they think they have to cover to keep people interested.
As someone who wants to listen to Half Japanese and hates greatest hits compilations
where should I start?
would also like to know this
Out of the things available on Spotify Bone Head is very approachable so
maybe start there, then Sing no Evil, much less accessible but brilliant, more what Half Japanese were about as a band.
Sing No Evil
obviously
Blimey, didn't know NME had it in them.
*no longer edits Top Gear Magazine
Magazine yes, website no.
Yep, but she needs to have a look at the NME website. Poorly written, unedited yesterday's news and a load of articles and related comedy Facebook comments relatng to Noel Gallagher's every fart. Shoddy.
Surely...
...'Howl' by BRMC would be on the radar of most NME readers.
Man alive, Clor self-destructed their own career.
This is a good list!
Not sure why Cocteau Twins or John Cale are in there, but otherwise a lot of good names and stuff I haven't heard of. Wonder that Jeffrey Lee Pierce album sounds like now, as I'm a fan of the Gun Club.
Good list (what I know of it)
but I do have a natural hatred of any list containing the phrase "you've never heard". How presumptuous.
and patronising
Oh god! Get a grip.
CLEARLY it's a general title referring to lesser known titles.
its not a big deal alright, throwaway comment.
mccarthy! felt! 16 lovers lane!
excellent stuff.
i wish momus and disco inferno were in there but you can't have it all.
This is an awesome list
I would have absolutely loved a list like this in the NME when I was 14.
I've heard 3.
I feel a Spotify playlist coming on.
Someone do this, please?
Not me, I'm lazy
Oh man
What a SHIT bump. Date read fail.
I've got one of these albums
Woooo.
Yay to Go-Bs, Junior Boys and Associates
Just waiting for someone to complain that they've heard one of those albums.
really happy Clor is number one
Since that album came out most indie bands in this country try to sound like them to an extent. Great record. I've really got into Felt as well recently so it's nice to see them on a list.
I've heard a total of 16 records on that list, another 10 or so I've been meaning to listen to and the rest I've either never heard of or have no desire to listen to in the near future. A pretty good list though, and if it gets some kids into the likes of Magazine, Cluster, The Cocteau Twins et al then that's pretty amazing.
Also a little off tangent but it's sort of accepted that NME is a lot better than it was with Conor Mcnicholas gone, right? I should pick a copy up and judge for myself soon.
my albums of the year
Clor "Clor" (2005)
Cocteau Twins "Heaven or Las Vegas" (1990)
and Wipers have been criminally ignored; greg sage should be an indie-guitar legend
Chuffed McCarthy got a respectable mention
Always thought they'd have more of a cult DiS following.
that Clor album is awful.
no.
60ft Dolls?
oh dear
That was Nicky Wire's pick, to be fair
I've got about four of those.
On top of that, there are a few artists on there where I've got, or heard other albums by 'em. Plenty of stuff I've never heard of though. So depending on how the article's wirtten up, I might actually buy that issue.
All subjective innit? So I'd wager that I could come up with an equally 'valid' list of 'cusp' albums.
Kinda ties in with the thread on Social at the mo. SO. MUCH. STUFF. SO. LITTLE. TIME.
i just want to broadcast
try #73 Skinnyman - Council Estate of the mind. It is THE urbany/hip-hoppy record par excelence.Very accessible.
A masterpiece.
This is an interesting list. People please post what you think are choice cuts from it.
Yes
Cordless Mics at 20 Paces is one of the finest hiphop tunes I've ever heard
Here's mine;
the shaggs <philosophy of the world > 1969
One of the greatest outsider albums of all time. Beautiful, frightening stuff.
6.the wipers < is this real > 1980
Great post-punk album.
25.magazine <real life > 1978
One of my favourite post-punk albums of all time. Magazines first three albums are all phenomenal but Real Life is just utterly, utterly sublime.
48.motorbass <pansoul >1996
One of the first French House albums, creating a path for the huge wave of stuff to arrive in the few years proceeding this.
62.jens lekman < night falls over kortedala >2007
Shimmering, stunning pop music. The sort of thing that's perfect to listen to laying down in the sun watching the clouds go by.
71.this heat <deceit >1981
Along with their debut, one of the most frightening, original and stunning pieces of post-punk / heavy electronica of the 1980's. This heat sound beyond their time and truly revolutionised music. The whole record seems like music you'd listen to in a bunker, waiting for a nuclear attack.
76.suicide 1977
Another post-punk classic. A record drenched in paranoia, confusion and anger: the musical equivalent of a musical breakdown with a few charming synths in the background.
75.mclusky < mclusky do dallas >2002
One of the best punk records of the 2000's. Every song feels like it needs to be chanted over and over again in a dinghy bar as you raise your fists. Incredibly good fun really.
I've heard only a few others, but not enough to warrant a "choice cut". I'm going to check out a few more of these I've been meaning to listen to for ages, especially XTC.
Eater?!
Cool. I've never actually heard a single note of Eater's music but the singer released a book about his time in the band which is a mighty good read.
King King
woohoo!
What a balls list
I've either got or heard a lot if these, and I haven't heard of anything. Bloody hell.
Sorry, (half asleep when I first commented!)
I think it's a surprisingly good list on one hand, as it's promoting stuff beyond the usual NME remit. BUT - I really don't know who it's for. If it's aimed at 14-year-olds, then great, as it's giving that aspect of the readership some great material to build on. HOWEVER if it's aimed at their broader demographic, then I'm not so sure. I'd say I wasn't as necessarily clued up on music as most people here, and I'd imagine a lot of their readership too, which makes me wonder if it's doing it's job without being patronising.
The Clor album was great...
...but it was hardly this obscure curio, was it?
YOU REPRESENT EVERYBODY IN BRITAIN. WELL DONE.
How nice :/
how is this being ranked
as in.. who decided what goes in the top 10 etc, when it's based on interviews with people in bands? i'm not sure i understand. why is Felt say at 10 and not say 67 or something.
Numbering is just the order they are in the magazine
choices made by people in bands and some by NME journalists. Some people have a page or two of recommendations (Kurt Cobain, Manic Street Preachers Mark Ronson)
I learned about The Wipers
from the covers that Nirvana did of them
Really happy to see that Cardigans album on there
- it's a gem.
Heard about 10
Not sure this is a good list for NME's readers really but who cares! Good to see them plugging music a bit outside of the usual tosh they promote.
what constitutes NME tosh nowadays?
for the past year, it's been fairly diverse (at least if you look beyond the front covers).
is the for carnation
the only suggestion from mogwai?
has to be said since Krissi Murison
took over there's been some brilliant stuff in NME (that lyric writing feature earlier this year, the Malcolm Mclaren issue etc). it's been better than it has been for years.
Even Elliott Smith got a front cover earlier this year
which I was really happy about - although NME typically went a bit tabloid about it, claiming to reveal "finally the truth about rock's unsung genius". But still, a massive improvement!
yeah, she's pretty aces
Good idea
I have got a fair few of these but haven't really played them too much. IS it not a bit early for something like The Walkmen to be albums you've never heard though?
whatever happened to pop levi, heard so much hype about em at the time
Little Barrie
is now the guitarist for Primal Scream
Isn't Pop Levi a solo thing for someone in Ladytron?
I might be completely wrong here...
Was their bassist at one point…
…and was also signed to their label, I think.
I got Pelt confused with Felt and thought this list was a lot better than it actually is.
elaine radigue tho! that's cool. who suggested her, do we know?
Ex Chelsea striker and West Ham manager...
Zola Jesus.
that would make sense.
Never heard of them. Shit list.
Spotify Link
http://open.spotify.com/user/rattlebag/playlist/5Mu0IA8Lkg7i1WgRFZjEpj
I'm realy glad to see Cardinal on there. That albums a favourite of mine.
Thanks for putting this together.
Surely people have heard Mobb Deep's 'The Infamous'
It's totally essential hip hop. Jens Lekman seems kind of obvious as well. And Scott Walker is nowhere in sight. And I think Penis Envy is better than The Feeding Of The 5000 as far as Crass is concerned. But otherwise pretty good.
really great list of stuff
obviously dont know it.
all picked by bands, journalists, etc? might pick my first copy of nme up in about 4 years
dont know a lot of it*
61.michael hurley< have moicy > 1976
Michael Hurley was the name of a notorious middle-aged shoplifter in Cardiff about 5 years ago when I worked in MVC and had access to a storenet radio to listen in on police/other stores surveillance who would 'pass on 'shoplifters as they made their way through the town centre'. I once caught him trying to nick CSI box sets. I hope it's the same person.
he's an american man
he's an american maaaan
he's coming to your town
he'll help you party down
he's an american man
What i'm saying it if that man was an american man then it might be him
Maybe!
Most shoplifters only grunt when you collar them. I wouldn't recognise an American grunt from a British grunt
He didn't look American, alas. But was the rrght age.
We Americans sound like this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jz1ZvOcmBQs
I've heard 7 of them in full
really surprised to see 'Bona Drag' there!
There's quite a bit of stuff where I've heard a few tracks but not the whole album- Jen Lekman, TV personalities, Young Marble Giants, Magazine etc.
On the whole this is one of the best lists i've seen in a while
Some odd choices though
Isn't Odyssey & Oracle part of the pop music canon?
& Mobb Deep's 'The Infamous' is an established rap great - I mean, most NME readers wont have heard it, but by that logic you may as well have Illmatic or Paid in Full on there.
Also, the P4K friendly indie pop such as The Walkmen, Junior Boys & Jens Lekman have all rated very highly in that publications lists & there seems little logic in including them over and above various other records to feature in the Top 20 or so albums of the year list from their respective years of release.
Good list, baffling entry criteria IMO.
Gonna check out loads from this
Though I'd have chosen a different Television Personalities album probably. 16 Lovers Lane is a great shout too
This is a great list.
I am glad to see that the NME has improved since Conor McWhatever found a more suitable job.
There is some stuff on the list I've heard, and some I own. There is also a lot I've never heard. This does not make me 14 years old or a moron. Everyone complaining about it being too mainstream or obvious is a fucking try-hard indie bellend.
Cheers.
Bonus:
I've been in love with 'In The Morning' by Junior Boys for years (it's in my top five played songs of all time according to Last.fm, mainly because I would play it every night when I used to DJ in Manchester). I also love Wild Beasts. They recommended the album said track is from and now I'm listening to it and really enjoying it. GOOD WORK.
ALSO they totally ripped off 'The Funpowder Plot' from 'So This Is Goodbye'
Well, a little bit.
one of my favourite albums of the 00s
inexplicably left out of all the major end of decade lists.
last exit is also brilliant.
...
if this list does nothing more than make me aware of the existence of that leadbelly record, then it will still be one of the all time great lists.
fuck-ing-hell.
i wish someone had told me about that sooner. amazing.
I have 26
Listened to about 40 of them
I WIN 1000 INDIE POINTS
Although
Hasn't every shoegaze band since 1990 been influenced by Heaven Or Las Vegas?
The only thing that *really* stuck out for me was Bona Drag
Even prior to the reissue, pretty well known and loved, no?
2011: where "they look like a poor man's Oasis" is a positive press point
I'd only heard of Suicide
And not because of MIA!
listening to 90 Day Men, as recommended by Mr Deez...this might take a few listens.
Interpol took me 7 years..
I've heard 52 of them. If anyone cares about that sort of thing.
I'm kind of surprised (and disappointed) that nothing Luke Haines-centric cropped up.
I know the Auteurs got a fair bit of NME loving back in the day, but I'd liked to have seen something like The Oliver Twist Manifesto in there.
Should have shoved this in the DiS users thread I suppose...
Never mind. Also: AMAZING ARTWORK http://www.lukehaines.co.uk/oliver-twist-manifesto/
no list like this is
complete without mention to the subliminal Mesh album "We Collide" released in 2006
this weeks issue is the same thing
what's the point?????????
is it exactly identical?
p. much
http://www.nme.com/layout/magImageSmall.php
deary me
however, the previous list did turn me on to Red Crayola, Clor and Young Marble Giants, so if this one isn't totally the same I'll still buy it.
It's got different albums on it.
It's not like it's exactly the same?? This was a really good issue last time so it's good that they're doing it again surely?
I haven't heard any of these
I did come quite close to buying Howl by BRMC when it came out but decided against it
maybe it's an annual thing then?
i wonder if It's Immaterial's Life's Hard And Then You Die will be in it this year.. i bet not.
Quite a good list, to be fair.
Nice to see 97.SUN RA < THE HELIOCENTRIC WORLDS OF SUN DA >1965 on there, abit surprised though.
If number 2 are who I think they are, then their vocalist lectures at my university.
... and it's a fucking shame for their audience if Cocteau Twins are an artist they've apparently 'never heard'.
Ditto, The Go-Betweens
I wasn't sure if it was just me, but you know they're hardly obscure bands and the albums they've chosen for each (Heaven or Las Vegas and 16 Lovers Lane), while not being chart toppers, were the most commercially successful for both of them.
The Field Mice should be higher
Suuuuuch an underrated band.
My girlfriend's friend's brother was/is in Orphan Boy. I think they're fucking shit.
It's not ranked in any order
If you actually read the article, the bands are bunched together dependent on genre, which artist nominated them or both.
doesn't matter
they should still be higher
And why the fuck would I want to read an NME article?
jesus christ, i know you're only a bairn but seriously
grow up
I'd pay 37.simple minds <reel to real cacophony >1979
really, though, a list like this, for a primarily UK readership, should be made up of heaps of non-UK bands (probably also non-US), rather than less popular albums of otherwise massively popular or well-known or influential acts.
You could easy fill the 100 slots with great Australian & NZ albums "you" have never heard. Ditto, I'm sure, Canadian, European, and (ahem) RoW albums.
So can someone post the list from this latest edition?
Be interesting to see how different it actually is.
a new thread for the 2012 list might make things a bit less confusing
and yeah has anyone seen the list yet?
even Twitter's coming up with very little except this actual thread!
The latest issue only came out today
Someone'll type it up on another forum eventually
As with the first list for the most part they've asked a load of musicians to pick one each. One of Grimes picked Aqua and couldn't even justify it to themselves, which somewhat brought the tone down.
I've listened to about 40 of those
I think it would have made more sense as a list if it didn't include as many contempary albums.
I'm sure we could have a better stab at this.
These would be my picks for some of the more obscurer albums that are mindboggling awesome - most of which are not on Spotify.
Fingers Inc "Another Side" (1988)
- The first and greatest Chicago House album from Larry Heard and Robert Owens. It was a double album, and spooky and brilliant from start to finish.
Anastasia Screamed "Laughing Down the Limehouse" (1990)
- Boston band, who took the hardcore/artcore sound and created an album that is sounds unique and beautiful. Chick Graining's vocals are all over the fucking place, in the most brilliant way. He went on to form Scarce, and had a brain aneurysm in 1995, went into a coma, but recovered.
The Intruders "Cowboys to Girls" (1968)
- One of the first philly soul groups to sing Gamble and Huff. They were awesome because they were not actually that great at singing, it always sounded a little strained, but the song writing was amazing.
Melanie "Candles In The Rain" (1970)
- Melanie Safka was a flower-power folk singer, but her songs were not really protest songs, just idiosyncratic musings on life and love. And her voice is completely amazing, like a child singing about worldly things - a precursor to Liz Fraser or Kate Bush.
CLOR!
There were quite a few people involved
They were each nominated by people in bands and NME writers
It's not a centralised list at all.
not listened to a single one of these
had a quick leaf through this one.
It includes Five Leaves Left.
i'm damned if i'm writing this list out
are 'scans' allowed on DIS? i'm guessing not..
biggest 'but surely everyone's heard that' moment comes at no 12 for MBV's 'Isn't Anything'.
nice to see Frankie of '.. and the Heartstrings' fame vote for 'Welcome To The Beautiful South', a record i was convinced NO-ONE in the entire world but me liked.
MBV, Mum, Five Leaves Left...
loads of stuff people will have heard.
Mum aren't that famous
Five Leaves Left is, IIRC, the choice of Lana Del Rey.
she's gone up in my estimation if that's so.
anyway, if it gets a few kids into Nick Drake it can only be a good thing.
That's a question that needs an answer.
The answer is YES! It's a slightly different beast to Loveless, a little more conventional but absolutely beatiful. It's got so many good songs, you can really hear them developing as a band exploring new sounds and experiments, some of which they'll unleash on Loveless and others....c'mon Kevin where are they?
Here's the opening song (and one of my fave MBV songs) for a taster (although it's not really representative):
Soft as Snow (but warm inside):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdF4lfdd2NM
...and that's enough brackets for one post.
magazinedownload.com
that doesn't make any sense there
but NME pdf's are on there, updated weekly
I'll try typing this up in a bit
actually my bad its Ecstasy And Wine but the photo next to it is of
Isnt Anything, just to confuse blind old bats like me.
lots of stuff i've never heard of in this list too mind.
I will definitely have a fun weekend with this
great shout on jarcrew!
pretty decent list there in all.
Chick Corea?
Jesus.
Here's the new list

Julian Casablancas???
other than that, looks good
I like how
Wretch 32 has, asked to name albums most people wouldn't know, has picked a top ten album from last year.
and an absolute stinker as well
'London Town' does deserve more love though
Equally, Justice
Picking The Prodigy. Surely most NME readers would know them? (Or are they an old people's band now? I'm so old, I don't know...).
Generally pretty good though; lots of stuff I don't know and I'd guess even more stuff that an average NME reader wouldn't.
great little record
agreed, but hardly unknown
true
but unfairly derided. could do with a little push!
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs (Billie Joe Armstrong)
I wondered what Sam Kilcoyne was doing these days
get in...
...Swirlies get some love, at last!
current NME readers don't know Late Of The Pier
:'(
Animal Collective - Feels
seriously?
these are mainly albums that NME fans won't have heard
but are fairly acclaimed, popular and well... known.
Aqua - Aquarium (Claire Boucher, Grimes)
:DDDDDDDDD
17
down on the last list. boooo
The Zombies - Odessey & Oracle... again??
Love Cole Alexander's pick though, garage rock, yum. And SCUM & John Lydon's picks.
Again, some overly obvious 'uns, but lots of good stuff too.
The Feelies are a good shout
but I haven't heard most of those, get the feeling they're scraping the bottom of the barrel a little bit/people from shit bands with a shit taste in music are recommending shit albums which "you" haven't heard cos they're awful (e.g. My Beauty by Kevin Roland)
If you haven't heard most of them it's worked
what's worked? just that it's lived up to the title "100 albums you've never heard"?
Yeah I guess, but surely it's meant to be recommendations of great albums, rather than just guilty pleasures or what have you? Like, if I went on and recommended the first Menswe@r album it would defeat the point, despite most NME readers not having heard it.
But saying that, there are a few albums on there I will definitely check out. I guess I'm just being grumpy cos the first list doesn't have any semi-ironic recommendations, yet this one has a few (fuck OFF Grimes)
In fairness, Grimes/Claire's full explanation was slightly more precise.

Barbie Girl - the witch house of its day
Late Of The Pier
