Whats the big deal about this record? Is it up there with Kanye's?
is that he doesn't have the band set up to do it. He still performs with the old gang he played with way back when. It was Richard Russell who created the music on I'm New Here and it's mostly electronic. It would be utterly fantastic though if during his show they rolled out this laptop with some other stuff and Gil would start tripping with that.
Fantastic album indeed
Still good though.
Start from the beginning. I know it sounds sarky but I think that's the best way to get into him. Basically, buy 'Pieces Of A Man' and 'Small Talk At 125th Street'. Small talk.. is just a poetry album really but its a really good one, whereas Pieces.. is more poppy and contains his best songs.
still not really sure why.
At the time I think it was only The Wire I remember giving it a lukewarm review and they were pretty spot on. There are moments that are really good (like the smog cover!) but it's damn patchy.
Deffos album of the year. And the end where he goes 'I love you mama, and thank you'. OH GOD IT KILLS ME.
