Luminaire closing
http://www.theluminaire.co.uk/content/blog/THE%20LUMINAIRE,%202005-2010/109
It is with sadness that we have to announce the closure of The Luminaire and The King's Head on 31st December. It's been a labour of love for a while now, and at this point it makes no sense for us to continue. We hope to be able to do some final farewell shows, probably in late March, and we'll let you know about those through the usual channels.
To all those who supported this independent venue, and the great artists who played here, since we opened back on 1st March 2011; you have our grateful thanks.
We were nothing without you.

Can't they just sell their time machine technology
and use the money from that to fund the venue?
This is a disaster
I can't think of any more to say.
:D
Zapsta you fucking LEGEND.
:D
This is really sad news.
I've had some great nights at The Lumi.
This venue had signs
saying that if you wanted to talk over the bands, you should bugger off. I'll miss it.
THIS
the world needs more signs like that. Sad times.
wasn't SS spose to be there this new year?
apparently still is
CLOSING PARTY :D
What's SS?

fuck
one of the best, soulful and important venues in London. Fuck
looks like something serious might be its swansong then.
Let's send it out in style guys.
Highly weak.
One the best venues in London. So many of my favourite gigs have been there.
I hate you, London, or something.
i swear guntrip posted this thread.
and i commented in it. weird.

Very sad about this, saw some great gigs there. Was a great venue to see a band u liked at. For a while Kilburn felt like it had a bit if a buzz going on. The Luminaire going isnt going to help that. The Kings Head next door was a great pub too, be just as sad to see that go.
Shocking. Absolutely shocking.
Top 10 Lumi gigs of all time:
1. Barr + No Age + Munch Munch (April 2007)
2. Final Fantasy + Grizzly Bear (May 2006)
3. Akron/Family + The Acorn + Hush Arbors (September 2008)
4. Foot Village + Pre + Vodka Soap + Drawlings (October 2008)
5. Battles + Semifinalists (February 2006)
6. Okkervil River + Jaymay (December 2007)
7. Jason Molina + The Singing Adams (April 2006)
8. Casiotone For The Painfully Alone + Plug + Concern (April 2009)
9. Mark Eitzel + David Hurm (October 2007)
10. Marnie Stern + Trash Kit + Tartufi (July 2009)
I'd second your no. 2 & 10
and I'd add Liars + Celebration + Semi-Finalists (sometime in 2005), Liars were absolutely astonishing that night - the (new) Drum's Not Dead stuff sounded so exciting. I'll never forget Angus towering over everyone chanting 'BLOOD!'
Mika Miko + Times New Viking last May was pretty great too.
Wish I'd seen that Barr gig.
I was at 7!
The Singing Adams covered The Constantines!
"since we opened back on 1st March 2011"
If I hadn't just fired myself, I'd fire myself.
No, we needed something to raise our spirits out of the gloom.

This is tragic
In my opinion, the people at the Luminaire exemplify how to run a music venue - with great expertise, skill, grace and humour. The fact that even a place of this calibre can't survive paints a very depressing picture indeed. And so, Another of the dwindling number of great music venues in London disappears... Absolutely tragic news.
Nice people, good gigs, rarely many people there
Was only awkward to get to when both the underground and overground lines were out, which happened occassionally. Seen some brilliant gigs there over the years, Midlake (and Natalie Imbruglia) immediately spring to mind, but did feel like diminishing numbers of late fo shure unfortunately.
This is gutting
Seen so many good acts here: The Chap, Part Chimp, Aidan Moffat, Electrelane, Future of the left....
:(
It is sad it's closing, I loved it as a venue.
But I do feel it was struggling to find decent bands and other promoters for some time. Maybe East London's success was instrumental in it's demise.
But I did see some wonderful gigs there.
Final fantasy + Grizzly Bear.
Oxes + Lords etc.
Volcano + Tape.
Lightning Bolt.
Viking Moses + Little Wings.
And many others I can't remember.
Thats a total
fucking disaster :( :(
shit
should've gone to see jess bryant there tonight
so many amazing shows, particularly remember stanley brinks and pictish trail from the last couple of years
What a shame.
As him out of Parenthetical Girls said there in May, "I can tell how good a venue is by how long they let me stand on the bar": he did a whole song wobbling his lanky frame upon it.
I'll miss the "shut up" signs. But also that little moat in front of the stage - nice touch.
Sad, really sad
Absolutely love that venue - the people that ran it were great and the signs were fucking brilliant.

Terrible, terrible news, I absolutely love the place
Now Something Serious NYE has the responsibility of being the closing party. Big task
Not for you, man. Not for you.
Can't believe this
Only been twice in the past year but seen so many great gigs there. Lightning Bolt, Volcano!, Final Fantasy, Former Ghosts, The Ballet, Sunset Rubdown, Mark Eitzel, The Field & more. This is shite news.
I went there for the first time this year to
see The Warlocks, great little venue.
If I don't get back there again
then the Ben Frost show in May will serve as a monstrous swansong for me. One of the few venues with the positive philosophy of attempting to serve music well. Sad news.
I'm pretty gutted also
Having a look at Songkick, it looks like The Luminaire is my most visited venue (joint with Union Chapel at 12 times a piece).
Jens Lekman, Get Well Soon, Benni Hemm Hemm, Hjaltalin, Fujiya & Miyagi, Angil & The Hiddentracks, Laura Gibson, Musee Mecanique, Antarctica Takes It!, Orphans & Vandals, Throw Me The Statue, Stars & Sons, A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Gregor Samsa, and The Sleeping Years were the bands I enjoyed there.
It would have been great to see Beirut play there, but he called off his performance on the night, and so A Hawk And A Hacksaw did a bigger main set. Which was good, but Beirut would have been amazing before they started playing bigger venues.
One favourite memory of mine was at the Benni Hemm Hemm gig. It was a night of Icelandic music, and wasn't especially busy, and so it was a debut of some special Luminaire deck chairs! There were maybe four or five of them at the front, and so us early birds got to sit in them. I remember the Luminaire chap saying that they'd bring them out for the less busy nights, but I never saw them again. Unless I just went to busier shows there afterwards. More gigs should have deckchairs though.
I had tickets for Beirut and didn't bother when they pulled out
Hawk and who? ;-(
I remember that Hawk & A Hacksaw show
after Beirut pulled out. He got ill in Europe as I remember, and couldn't even get to the UK that night - AHAAH only found out when they got to the venue, they were meant to be playing as part of his band I think. They were so upset, but they put on such a great, wonderful show that night, and I think everyone who used their tickets anyway and saw them knew how special it was.
The deckchairs did come out on a few occasions! As you say, the quieter shows. I loved those deckchairs.
this news sucks
Today was a bad day
and it just got a lot worse.
Sleepy Sun doing The Chain will live long in my memory amongst many other things.
Is there no saving it at all?
I can’t really pick out a favourite show (Marnie Stern, perhaps? Or seeing Festival for the first time maybe?),
But for personal reasons, the ones we put on (Ben Frost, Tall Firs, Matt Elliott and Cave) were some of the most wonderful nights of my life. The Ben Frost show in particular, will live long in the memory.
Really really gutted about this....
Some great times there-
Final Fantasy and Grizzly Bear
Stars of the Lid
Fucked Up (NYE show)
Memory Tapes
Cougar
White Magic
Hawk and a Hacksaw
Comets on Fire
Not to mention Tim Hecker next week. You will be sorely missed Luminaire as much for your intimate atmosphere and great music choice as for your militant policies ;-)
Comets on Fire
was AWESOME. And that Fucked Up show was insanely brilliant.
wtf?! gutting news. had some great nights there.=
Never a total fan of the Luminaire
but this is very sad news. It's always a shame when a brave and innovative venue closes.
FUCK
saw one of my favourite ever gigs at the luminaire.
cheers.
My favourite Luminaire moment happened when I wasn't even there –
Towards the end of The Hundred Handed's last gig, when a DiSer who shall remain nameless was standing at the front of the audience and suddenly puked on the stage.
I was there and I don't remember that.
^remembers the hangover the morning after though
Dick Dale/Stinking Lizaveta was a great show
plus
Julie Doiron/Constrution & Destruction
Chris Brokaw & Jason Molina
we have Chris Brokaw and Geoff Farina this saturday and its set to be one of our best shows of the year.
lovely venue-best in London and here's why:
great sound-best in London
rich, clean decor that sets the scene
They don't put on PAY to PLAY gigs
nice bar with pints + full pub selection rather than just £3.50 bottles of beer
helpful staff that love music and bands
lots of monitors that work and are crystal clear
decent microphones and stands that work
heating and air conditioning
band parking
a large clean back stage room with free towels, working fridge and sink
clean toilets!
wifi, access to printer
a place for flyers/posters
and
best of all they have a massive mailout, flyer mailout, up to date last fm/facebook/twitter/myspace accounts that really helps promoters get people to a show.
Your just don't get those things in almost all other London venues- so its really sad to see the place shutting down.
Musicians love to play there and the public love seeing bands perform well in a nice music-friendly atmosphere.
Come along on Saturday and let's have a great last gig at this wonderful place.
memories...
- lightning bolt: i managed to climb on top of one of the speakers and watch the chaos unfold. my ears have never been the same.
- stars of the lid: they confessed at the start that that they were really nervous as their previous london show (some years before) had gone terribly. this one couldn't have gone better.
- a hawk and a hacksaw: beirut dude failed to show, but AH&AH played to an ecstatic crowd anyway. encore with his band, half on stage, half in the crowd, went down a storm.
- parenthetical girls w/ former ghosts and ghost bees: this was the end of their tour and my birthday, so the party atmosphere was spot on. ghost bees support slot was prob the best i've seen from a band i'd never heard of.
- volcano!: first and only time i've seen them. (they were great though!)
Just got in from The Lexington
I reckon The Lexington have probably stolen their crowd to an extent. Nice people, well run, solid line-ups and perceptively more accessible to people.
The comments in this article
are mindblowingly stupid

I don't understand why Kilburn is seen as such a disastrous place for a venue
It's in Zone 2, got really good transport links...so why is it a problem that it's in the northwest? Surely gig-goers live all over the city?
Maybe Kilburn just isn't seen as a buzzy place to go out. But personally I don't care where I am when I'm watching a band.
I really like Kilburn
The problems with the Jubilee line and the Overground must have been an utter pasting for them though
I don't know. The Luminaire never really did weekend events,
in the same way that, say, Barden's used to.
The Overground (both to Kilburn High Road and Brondesbury) has improved hugely over the past year or so, and hasn't actually been closed that much.
It was closed for 6 months solid!
Not that part of the line.
The Gospel Oak to Stratford part was shut for 3 months earlier this year.
Obviously, it means that people from Dalston, Highbury and Camden couldn't get direct trains to Brondesbury, but I can't see it having a massive impact, compared to, say, the rise of Dalston, Hoxton and Shoreditch.
*the rise of Dalston, Hoxton and Shoreditch as destinations in themselves.
Right, so I'm putting on a NYE party here the day before it closes
Come along
