Sod all this 'must progress' nonsense.
Funeral for a Friend
I look at the music board, I see a thread title that seems designed with them in mind.
of what can be accomplished in music. :)
what else I like and dislike?
If you dislike Midnight Organ Fight
I mean fucking come ON. POKE?! That song doesn't make your heart tremble?
you're just unware that they had an album before Midnight Organ Fight. because Sing the Greys, although a decent album, doesn't even compare to Midnight Organ Fight
roscoe is a fantastic track, and it's natural for things to progress, but i do prefer the admittedly more bareback first album, likewise with tunng and asobi seksu. And 'courage' left me wanting, but i usually do go for the more lo-fi approach so it could just be me.
but it isn't really the record I thought they'd produce after listening to 'Bamnan'. Granted, I'm not let down by it, I just prefer the electronic flourishes to the "70s / AM Gold / Fleetwood Mac" sound they seem to have landed on.
I'm all for bands taking chances, using different approaches and whatnot, but 'The Courage of Others' was the biggest let down for me this year by a wide margin.
To each their own, but you prefer it to 'The Software Slump'? That album has never left my player!!
but yes i definitely would pick western freeway over software slump. not saying any of artist preceeding albums are bad i really enjoyed Adems 'Takes' for example. Just that i prefer the originals. I think this quite often comes from having the debut album and then when the second album comes out feeling its not quite what you were expecting/wanting
because i wasn't counting the self released albums, and comforter was older material released after freeway, my bad
(Kings Of Leon)
his new album is actually pretty good.
Instead of Evol, Dirty, Daydream Nation, Sister, Washing Machine or whatever we had endless re-treads of 'she's in a bad mood'???????????????????????????????????????/
i'd probably have to put the cat and the cobra and the rome upside down ep over 3/5 but i get your point
i do enjoy their early records but prefer their less abrasive, more crafted sound.
The Beach Boys
these new puritans
But I don't think there's anyway that they could still sound like that. Listen to Funeral now, and it sounds like a bunch of young people who can barely play, and it's great. But to try and recreate that would probably just end up with blander, better produced, fascimile of the same.
Other bands would be The Killers (and Brandon Flowers was far better when he was fat!), Bloc Party, Interpol - basically any band from the early 2000s then.
I've also been listening to Suede recently, and think that Butler should never have left and they should have retained the same sound forever. What makes me laugh about Butler and Anderson, though, is that they always seem to criticise the production on the first two albums, but everything they have been involved with since has had an awful production.
and called it Neon Bible, and basically nobody liked it?
massively seconded about Suede though: not that their first two albums sound anything like each other (they're both ace though)
I may even prefer it to funeral. It's got a total different atmosphere, it feels darker and more textured. If that makes sense. Which it doesn't.
I think Ed Buller was really onto something with those first 2 Suede albums. Bernard Butler always massively slated the production but I hate his own production. I got into the White Lies album about a year ago - the production really stood out as great and who was it? Ed Buller...
De La Soul is Dead, Buhloone Mindstate and Stakes is High all trump it, I reckon
but each to their own
and BIONIX is great too.
Granted, they haven't evolved very much, but this is an inherently picky thread, so there you have it. Them and KIngs of Leon...
Were better before they started fucking around with octave pedals, bagpipes, marimbas and Meg on vocals.
Although De Stijl was their peak IMO.
Common sentiment I know but Rev's first LP Yerself Is Steam is unique and has never been matched at what it did by them or anyone else (whatever that was..opiate pop and bone crunching nose?).
They made great albums after, but this was something special wasn't it? Bring back the flutes...
urm...i meant noise
Boces was great too
Deserter's Songs is where it's at. They never have and doubtful never will top that.
SYOTOS has some awesome moments too. Dross thereafter. :D
(First half of All Is Dream is actually better than DS IMO)
Think about it, they basically perfected that sound with one album. If they tried to stay the same they never would have been able to top it, and would have gotten very stagnant very quickly. Instead, while their two subsequent albums may not be quite as good as Funeral, they're still a change in direction that, however slight, was needed. I can certainly still see them topping or equaling Funeral in their career now.
Interpol are another example of this, in that their first album basically perfected the sound they were going for, but, unlike Arcade Fire, they have now become a shadow of their former selves.
dillinger escape plan
mewithoutYou (but I still like their new stuff)
but, yeah, pretty much.
Note no The
End Of Thread
Unfortunately I fear Turn on the Bright Lights may have been the high water mark.
but they've never matched it. I don't know what happened after this record, but everything seemed to go downhill. Although, I did like some of the stuff they did with T Bone Burnett.
s/t precludes a ^This from me, I'm afraid
thats just silly
Their debut might not their best, but it'd be a massive improvement, so I'd take it without grumbling.
Belle & Sebastian
I still haven't been able to work out whether Highly Suspicious is some sort of musical joke or not.
Nailed it on the head.
My friend went to see Brandon Flowers solo tonight. Said it was awful.
that is sorely lacking in their now stadium-pounding sound. Granted their current sound isn't without it's charm, but I do miss the quieter, smaller feeling of Parachutes. With the exception of Yellow, most of those songs still sound amazing for a band's first album.
as opposed to the 5th/6th (inc. Digital Ash)??
are one of those bands with a sound that really benefits from the experience of recording together and expert production, i love everything from frengers on but find the early stuff before that almost unlistenable
The Dandy Warhols
I AM RIGHt. YOU ARE WRONG.
How could something so good get so bad?!!
The Menace was fucking excellent!
Oh, wait. Thank fuck for that. :D
100 Broken Windows is the height of everything. Ever.
VoB is my fave album but it sounds the same as blackened sky so it works. The other 3 are guff.
And Mountains etc but basically ^this
And I agree about the Killers. Hot Fuss was great and then their b-sides etc album Sawdust was good but Sam's Town was pretty bad mostly and I've not managed to properly get into Day & Age.
All the albums have at a few good songs but Sam's town really was bad.
Second album please
Fall Out Boy
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
1. Does Fun House really sound much different to The Stooges?
2. Fun House > The Stooges
