Supersonic 2010 - the aftermath...
My first time at Supersonic/The Custard Factory/Birmingham in general.
I was eagerly anticipating Godflesh and Swans. Godflesh were excellent, mainly Streetcleaner and Pure was the bulk of it. Devastating starting duo of Like Rats and Christbait Rising. However Swans absolutely knocked the shite out of me, slapped me in the face and made origami yachts out of my eardrums. Earth-shattering brilliant.
They played mainly songs from My Father... which up until an hour before their performance I thought was good, but I felt it was a lite version of swans. All the songs from My Father... are transformed in drone/noise-fest progressions that are a test of your will to see if you pop your fingers into your ears to defend them. Not that it was a feedback overload, it was a case of how loud will it go before it feeds back? The guitars couldve gone louder! It was Gira's voice that actually played havoc with your spinal fluid and made your eyes vibrate.
Other highlights for me were Demons, Devilman, Napalm Death (greatest hits set, almost), Nissenennmondai and Zeni Geva who were the surprise package very very good.
Who were your highlights.
Swans were absurdly better than everything else around them
but King Midas Sound, Hallogallo and Nisennenmondai also rocked my world to a solid degree.
Swans
just Swans.
my left ear will never, ever be the same. I can't hear a fucking thing...
Blue Sabbath black Fiji were ace
Naplam were amazing as usual
Swans
i was at the front
left ear, me too!
Michael Gira's face was a total picture when he was rocking out
I liked how he was orchestrating mid-song, especially Thor and Chris.
First time for me too
Loved it, although I was taken aback by how cold it was, I naively expected it to be more 'indoors' so was on the verge of pneumonia on the first day.
Godflesh (from what I remember, I'd drank a few too many continental lagers by then) were great, although Justin Broadrick was apologising on Facebook for lack of volume. Didn't seem that bad for me. Other first day highlights were Eagle Twin, Gnaw (who got better by the end), Lichens and Gnod.
Sunday was all about Swans but I really loved Nissenenmondai and Hallogallo. Caught about half an hour of Barn Owl who were performing with a film backdrop in the theatre, left to see the end of Factory Floor and am still not convinced by them at all.
Swans were an amazing finish to the festival though, the fact that Gira almost kicked a photographer in the face in the first 5 minutes cracked me up. Such intensity from him onstage, I'd never seen anything like it. Amazing stuff.
i too expected it to be more indoors.
I nearly sacked Godflesh off because i was shivering that much. Glad i didnt, the old curry and coffee combo sorted me out just enough.
I didn't go to Supersonic
but am positively salivating at these Swans reports - can't wait to see them tomorrow night.
You're in for a treat
If I wasn't going away today I'd be going to see them again at Koko. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen, the volume and intensity of the performance was something I've never seen done quite so well.
seeing them in Manchester on Saturday
I am rather looking forward to it
I would too, seriously amazing check this out

Seeing them tomorrow at KOKO
I can't wait!
Better than last year I think
And as everyone else as said, Swans were mind (and ear) blowing, and easily he highlight of the festival, though Godflesh were great too - they could have been a bit louder, but it was loud enough, and standing in a moshpit as about a hundred people howled the lyrics to Like Rats back at Broadrick was pretty electrifying. Other highlights were Factory Floor, Eagle Twin, Zeni Geva, James Blackshaw and Gnaw. Napalm Death were pretty fun too, and I liked Peter Broderick's set despite being unfamiliar with his stuff.
Oh yeah, King Midas Sound were also a highlight
I wasn't expecting them to be so abrasive live, and the new Bug single sounded incredible live
Absolutely loved it too
Little gutted didnt watch Swans as left just before them. Wasnt really that bothered but have been getting rave reviews everywhere.... mind you was totally not in the mood by that point! Amazing weekend though, Melt Banana, King Midas Sound and loads more.
I did a review here:

Does anybody have any idea of the set lists?
Would be particularly interested in working out the Swans one, though I recognised a fair amount of it (mostly the stuff off my father...). Any others would be great too, I'm pretty sure there was some new material in the Factory Floor and Eagle Twin sets.
