So, what with the British Sea Power attack this week I thought I'd dig this gem out. Still pretty fucking good, huh?
about how they've gone downhill. it isnt though.
its a great album, but i prefer do you like rock music? atom is stupendous.
Just because I'm so in love with the BSP of the first album - and the spectacular B-sides at around the same time - that I don't think anything could quite live up to them for me. I do like Open Season though, must go back and listen to DYLRM then...
never got into Open Season that much, but DYLRM has some corkers (no lucifer, canvey island, waving flags, ATOM etc)
and I think they were so different, without being gimmicky, that there was kind of a mythology around them that made them easy to fall for. So many amazing B-sides around that time too.
Open Season was a really solid album, and DYLRM was spectacular at times but quite severely frontloaded. I think they'll always release high-quality stuff, but probably not anything quite as special as Decline.
Top 5 BSP, just cos I've been reminded by this thread how good they can be:
North Hanging Rock
Big fan of 'Carrion' and 'Lately'.
Lost a bit of interest after DYLRM but that was rekindled after seeing them at Green Man last year and recently in London. Will follow that up by buying the new Zeus EP which by all accounts sonds pretty good.
knocks spots off everything else they've subsequently released for me, which is not to say Open Season or Do You Like Rock Music? don't have their moments, but neither is a classifiable 9-10/10 album either whereas The Decline Of... most definitely is.
