"Write about love, it could be in any form /
hand it to me in the morn..ing"
Hope the album's better.
Just.. mind bogglingly lacklustre and self parodic.
I wasn't exactly counting down the days until I heard new Belle and Sebastian material, but when this came on the radio I found myself thinking "well, there's another band I used to love releasing rubbish".
but then I had the same not hugely enthusiastic reaction to Funny Little Frog when I first heard it and wound up loving The Life Pursuit so I'm not too fussed yet.
and them having Norah Jones doing a guest vocal doesn't bode well for the album.
Also, that cover is a cliché of a cliché
it's very 'mature' by their standards, no real pretending they're teenagers anymore, no fey jokes, quite Burch Bacharach. But some really beautiful moments, very confident, very melodic. Haven't actually read the press release, but there's a lot of female vocals - Stuart only pops up on the bridge to the first track (which is really good) - so I guess Nora Jones is one or all of them, but she fits in. Write About Love is one of the only real guitar tracks, so it sort of fits into the flow pretty nicely, not really a standout though.
I better post here so I remember the next time, it's possibly the biggest lump of nothing I have heard for ages.
hopefully they've not lost it completely.
It's really pretty disappointing, but there are enough good qualities in it to indicate that the album might still be good.
Yes 'write about love' is very meh, but I don't think you can really dismiss the album after hearing this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snailu0RnLg
Whoever said Burt Bacharach is dead on, also Frankie Valli. Classic pop music. I'm looking forward to it.
It's actually one of the reasons I'm looking forward to the album. I think it's one of the best songs they've done in years.
will have to track it down and give it a whirl
Carey Mulligan is a guest on the album as well I hear
Come On Sister:
I see absolutely no need for complaint.
Roll on Bowlie 2.
