Best record of 2010, and best live band. Yar?
Haven't seen them live sadly but this album is still growing on me. Top 5 for sure.
which means my number 5. The best straight up guitar band around at the moment though, yes definitly.
public strain is staggeringly good, particularly China Steps.
it's a great album, certainly a contender. enjoyed them live, but not one of my gigs of the year.
noisy, great jams and lots of nice krauty rhythms. Way better than their first record suggested.
it's the intensity of the rhythms combined with the control of the noise that really comes out when they play live.
the new album is much better than the first, though it's made me revisit the first one and find more i liked about it.
the only thing that struck me was how outregeously they ripped off Sonic Youth's guitar sounds circa Kill Yr Idols
I may listen to it again, as it seemed alright, and I generally think it's best not to judged things based on one cursory listen
it's about what you do with the guitar tones, i think they've released a record that's a lot stronger than Kill Yr Idols or Confusion is Sex were. they've integrated those Kraut-y ryhthms into it really well. but yeah, that was a central plank of the reviewi wrote as well, the guitar tones sound so much like SST-era Sonic Youth
though it seems somehow more shameless with Women, since they came 30 years after, whereas both Renaldo and Moore (even though they were definitely on the tail end) were still vaguely part of the no wave scene, and both at various points played with Branca, which kinda gives them more leeway maybe.
but yeah, I haven't really heard the album enough so I shouldn't really say anything much about the actual songs and so on
I'm no expert, but they play around with tonal/atonal interactions in a very cunning way.
But 'Eyesore' is something of a sledgehammer to the chest, so I'll pick this up and hope I don't suffer the same fate once more.
contender for album of the year for me but live they are somehow even better. an amazing live band. saw them in leeds and lots of people were just talking, drinking at not really watching. if this band doesn't make you sit up and take notice, nothing will
It should be 10 minutes longer. I saw them in Leeds t'other week and they were incredible, pity about the twatty crowd though, they're not a friday night band thatsfersure. Structurally their songs are amazing, some of the chord shapes they toss off is like WHA?!!?
...what demons said! :)
I love the last 3 songs especially, especially Eyesore which i think might be the best song of the year.
