I'm a little concerned about my use of Last FM
I buy a lot of music. Really, too much. I play it on my stereo all the time. Often when my gf is around, more often when she's not.
Whenever I play something on my stereo I will simultaneously put it up to play on my computer on Media Player or Spotify so that Last FM can track what I am doing. This weekend, and not for the first time, I waited for a Soulseek download before I played a second hand vinyl purchase just so that Last FM recorded my playing of this in real life.
Please go on and tell me that I am a crazy fuck.

A Genuine Freakshow
I often do this
But not obsessively, only if it's on the computer/spotify and I can be arsed. I've never specially downloaded something and waited. Surely you can listen now, scrobble later?
Yeah i do this sometimes
always feel pretty sad.
very thinly veiled 'I have a girlfriend' thread
I've done similar things. I also wait until a song finishes (even if there is 10 seconds of silence) instead of skipping when I play music on itunes to make sure it counts it as a full played song.
I'm pretty sure scrobbles count from the halfway point.
Right -but I meant for my itunes counter - separate from Last.fm
Oh.
erm
you can set tracks to end when you want on itunes

Youz crazy, holmes.
Mine are pretty inaccurate because I play CD's in my car and my iPod only scrobbles about 35 percent of the time.
But in the end, I dont care that much.
you're a crazy fuck
but this might help you out a bit.
http://lastfmstats.livefrombmore.com/universalscrobbler/
seems that ^this does the same thing as cog scrobbler
yeah pretty much
just it uses MusicBrainz rather than Discogs. I've used cogscrobbler too, and occasionally found things missing from the Discogs database. New releases seem to take a while to make their way into Discogs.
This looks like a very handy little tool
I'll still feel slightly pathetic using it but at least it's convenient!
Jesus wept.
I've known someone who left their laptop playing (sound off)
over night to gain extra scrobbles. bizzare.
This whole charade is unbelievably sad
Does it count plays on your walkman while you're waiting for the number 274 train to Whitstable?
you have autism
don't we all?
all the DiS users I've got listed in in my spreadsheet seem to have it, anyway.
You really need to delete your last.fm account
or else you will never get your life back
I hear you.
But you can skip the whole simultaneous playback charade by using Cog Scrobbler.
http://trac.ulfurinn.net/cog-scrobbler/
It's primarily for scrobbling vinyl & tapes etc. But it's linked to discogs.com, so you can scrobble pretty much anything in that database (i.e. manually scrobble CDs). You can either search by artist, or you can find the CD on discogs and plug it's ref no (the number at the end of it's discogs URL page) into it and do it that way.
I'm not religious about it but I tend to do it for bits and bobs that I've listened to that haven't scrobbled.
It'd be a worry if you were doing it purely for the playcount stat (the way people have 500 'friends' on facebook), but there are plenty of reasons why you'd want your scrobbles to be representative of what you've been listening to. The first ones that come to mind are live event and band/track recommendations.
It's a poor do that.
Do you even like music or do you just like lists?
Why why WHY?
lolololololol
someone i know does this
:D
Not got this bad
but I have played an album or two through Spotify or iTunes rather than just stick the CD on just so it scrobbles. I only recently got onto Last FM and am wondering whether I should have stayed away for this exact reason!
Now I've seen that cog scrobbler maybe that will help, or make my obsessivness worse!
When I listen
to music, I reach for a CD, put it in my CD player and press 'Play'. No one knows what music I am playing (unless some crackpot neighbour is obsessively holding a glass up to their wall to try to make out which album it is - I strongly doubt that this is occurring.. I think they may have lives to lead and such..)
Unless MI5 have a file on me, there is no record anywhere of what music I have listened to in the past 1 hour/day/month/year, except my own memory of what I have been listening to/enjoying lately.
Am I 'citizen insane'?
On further thought I've been trying to think why you would do this
Does it serve any real purpose or is it a meaningless OCD that you have no control over?
Do you document other activities in your life to such an extent?
In my case I just like my last.fm being an accurate depiction of my tastes so I can use it to demonstrate what I'm into
As well as for recommendations for artists and events. I just happen to use my CD player a lot and can go long periods of time without listening to anything on the computer. Essentially it's like those people who download the software to scrobble plays from their mp3 players.
However, as I've said, I'm not quite as mental about it as the OP.
And I haven't bothered with an mp3 player scrobbler.
Oh I Didn't know last.fm recommended events based on your listening habits
I tried using last.fm a few times but thought it's main purpose was mostly so that you could express your musical taste to other people in your list of friends, which doesn't interest me. Although I quite like the Big Brother feature of last.fm seeing what you listen to, and then letting you know when a gig is happening. Might check this out further, just hope I don't develop an OCD.
I don't know about everyone else
but I'm convinced. I might sign up tonight.
>"Does it serve any real purpose or is it a meaningless OCD that you have no control over?"
- As I said: "The first ones that come to mind are live event and band/track recommendations."
Whatevs. I don't lose any sleep if it's not totally right, and I couldn't really give a chuff what my overall playcount is. But I'm just quite interested in what I've been listening to, not that it means a great deal, but it's often quite surprising, and music's one of the things I 'do' so..., y'know... just having a last.fm account in the first place puts you into a certain category of music geek. And if you're gonna scrobble, why settle for doing a half job?
>"Do you document other activities in your life to such an extent?"
- I keep my digital photos well ordered and barely delete any that I've taken, even if it's barely possible to tell what they're of. Does that count? I've considered setting up a discogs account listing my collection, just because. Similarly, www.LibraryThing.com has it's appeal (good way to get recommendations, etc), but I haven't bothered to sign up. People have blogs of all the arty or crafty stuff they've made...
As said above I may check out the event recommendations
I keep all my digital photos, but don't document them as such, just put them in a folder and they stay there, however I'm not concerned about which dates I looked at a particular photo, which would be the scrobbling equivalent. I can also see the point in listing my record/CD collection/book collection as that is just a one off thing, but not documenting which book I was reading on a particular day.
I'm sure in ten years time it might be interesting to know what I listened to on a partuicular day, however not interesting enough for me to keep stats about it.
Having said all that I really should start documenting the gigs I've been to. Found an old list the other day and was interesting to see gigs on there I'd totally forgotten about.
Fair point about the photos.
I guess, at the end of the day, if I'm being honest, scrobbling is mostly an exercise in trainspotting. And if I'm gonna do it at all I'm gonna do it (kinda) 'properly'. Gig/track recommendations are nice (gig listings are just about as complete as any other single source, and I like being able to get the RSS feed of them in my google reader) but I could defo live without it (obviously, seeing as it's only been around for a fraction of the time I've been listening to music). I do like last.fm but I'm sure another distraction will come along before too long and it'll get sacked off.
I'm definitely going to check out the recommendations so might sign up for a while
Just found this cautionary tale though, maybe the OP can read this and not feel so crazy
http://www.theinevitablenose.com/2009/08/the-last-fm-straw-a-tale-of-addiction/
the person who wrote that is lame
and I say this as someone who was befriended by a Hot Girl I met previously just after I had been drunkenly listening to Jessie's Girl by Rick Springfield on repeat.
I didn't read the whole thing
but got the gist he was listening to music to improve his stats rather than for enjoyment.
Not so much that,
but more that he allowed it to guide his listening.
I've done this (although not to his degree) on occasion, but it's no bad thing - I generally don't get into albums until they've had a few listens, but I also tend to massively over-listen to certain things and ignore others. I often use last fm as a guide to make me stop listening to records and spend more time with ones I may have overlooked and need to put more effort in on.
(Test run)
9am - just had some Hovis wholemeal toast with Robinson's strawberry jam on it. Must invest in the 'Bonne Maman' next week...
9:03am - glass of OJ. Morrison's own, the one without the bits in.
11:14 - Bit peckish, going to try the 'Batchelors' minestone with a crusty white roll..
11:19 - Was lovely!
13:03 - Lunch! Cooked up a lovely little risotto - threw in some fresh greens from Bob's stall at the market.
Is this what I miss out on with Twatter?

You know
I suddenly feel like I just can't live without knowing all this exciting stuff that everyone else gets up to. I might give up my job just so's I can spend all day keeping up with people's habits. Why live when you can keep track on everyone else living?
I have a "thing" about only letting whole albums scrobble
i think it looks messy when there's lots of random tracks by different artists. even if i get bored of the album ill force myself to listen.
I do this
I don't want to look like someone who's always skipping between things.
I think its ended up being a good thing because its stopped me paying for whole albums and only listening to three tracks, which I used to do a lot.
I do this as well
I also believe you need to give music space to breath - I like to get to the position that I can 'picture' the sound - I mean detect the single instruments and the recurrent lines/themes/whatever
the live performances are then more rewarding as there is a measure of expectation built up
I used to do this
I only really tend to use Spotify at home now, though...
But essentially a recommendation service is only going to be as accurate as what you feed into it, and I find that Last FM is really good as a recommendation service.
Also I like stats. Lots and lots of stats.
(But I do love how antsy some people get over others doing this
All my music is on my laptop anyway as it all goes on my iPod. it makes no difference whatsoever except to improve a service I like to use. OH NOES!)
Surely.
Now you're being a bit OCD on the other side of the argument. Also, your last paragraph made no sense at all to me.
I've heard some people talk about going to last fm profiles and reading them and thinking "wow, I feel much more enlightened for having visiting that than I ever did beforehand"
ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE YEAH
I just think some of your posts make you look like a confrontational dick, and you should probably tone it down
I can provide some evidence here
I love it when you click on someone's profile and they have, say, 200 plays of mount kimbie, but their most played track is by Hulk Hogan & The Wrestling Boot Band.
Honestly, I didn't think you could get much wordier.
Somehow you did it.
^ Your shortest post.
When it comes to bringing out mild forms of OCD
Last.fm is the least of my worries.
If the original poster
is the same as you then they must be having one helluva life party.
Is this thread still going?
Why didn't you all get on board my alternative ironic thread? It could've been way funnier...
I really should delete my account or keep it and not be so arsed about it
I scrobble albums mostly
Ifi I listen to random songs I painstakingly pick them out
I don't even like how they scrobble a song several times if you listened to an album more than once on your iPod
Do crazy things to avoid getting jewed out of scrobbles
Listen to a track alll the goddamn way to the end even when scrobbles pick up halfway through
Will curb listening to music depending on if it scrobbles or not, vinyl is usually fine w/ me, but that thing about playing an album after listening to vinyl is a good idea. Never thought of that.
Funny thing is hardly anyone sees my last.fm page
See? I'm nowhere near as bad as these people.
Only listening to full albums because individual tracks 'look messy'? I genuinely don't understand this at all. Plus, part of what interests me about last.fm stats is the ability to click on an artist and see how many times I've listened to each track (and if you click on the number you even get to see when!).
All sounds a bit too involved for me.
I'm going to continue life without the stress of this scrobbling business. That is all this thread makes it sound like: stress.
