or your friends would give you a tape/cd....Good times.
a couple of my mates started selling copied CDs to make money. i got a copy of All Filler No Killer, i played it to death because i really valued having it. now i get given some MP3s now and then and never listen to them.
Maybe because I spent the little money I had on it.Also listening out for the name of a band and writing it down so you could request it again at a later stage.TAPEING FROM THE RADIO.
also: getting a free CD with a magazine. i still listen to pretty much all of the CDs i got with magazines.
jumpers for goalposts. Marvelous.
But I remember discovering music off MTV2.
Like it was last week. Cos it was. Good times.
Mary Anne Hobbs still does the radio thing for me...
thanks to radio. Some good, some only good at the time. see:
Alfie (local Manc band, easily smitten)
Mull Historical Society
The Strokes! (very early on thanks to Lamacq)
White Stripes (again early on, but thanks to Peel this time)
they were a band I discovered, that no on else really liked massively , bar my girlfriend. saw them touring each record and was disappointed when they split, despite the thought that they werent necessarily getting better.
But, they had their own style and understated charm, which I loved, and it marked a really important milestone in my musical journey at that age. Great guys!
Don't be silly. In fact it's still the best way. I'd much rather have the radio on while I'm doing something else and just wait for something to catch my attention than have to trawl through endless MySpaces off the back of Pitchfork reviews or forum recommendations. Try X-Posure on Xfm between 10 and 2, and KEXP whenever.

Not all of the above is new as in 2010 vintage but that don't bother me none.
I'm not saying that it is completely dead but there is a new age of discovering music, blogs and such things.
what's your username
now if i hear a song i like but miss the artist's name, i remember some lyrics and google it up. back then, i'd have to keep listening to try and hear it again, or sing it to my mum and hope she knew it which was just as bad. never liked singing in public
used to help me no end, until i moved out
Discover somebody new everytime I listen to Gideon Coe's show in the evening...
