Forest Swords
Just listening to Dagger Paths at the moment - it's flaming brilliant. I must have been mad - the first time I heard it I didn't get it.

Yeah, it's amazing
You should check out the new thing they've just put out on No Pain In Pop as well. 'Hjurt' is my favourite thing he's done, the middle section of it is absolutely gorgeous.
Thanks for the tip
Will do. Anything else sounding like this at the moment? I heard him get lumped in lazily with WitchHouse but I don't realy see the similarities myself.
He fits in more with a lot of the other stuff on Olde English Spelling Bee, and some of their compadres
Try out James Ferraro/The Skaters (though he has a pretty intimidating back catalogue) for sure. Other than that, there's quite a lot of stuff with the same vague, muggy atmosphere that I'm really enjoying at the minute -
Golau Glau (there's a great mix of their stuff up here: http://www.mixcloud.com/spaceinvaderradio/songs-of-praise-11710-with-golau-glau/)
Emeralds and Oneohtrix Point Never - a lot more synth heavy but with the same spaced out, dreamy feel to them
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og1qs2OAuPE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxiWjl9GPhM
James Blake and Mount Kimbie - with more of an electronic bent, but again tap into similar headspaces and woozily melodic styles. 'Maybes' in particular has that same beautiful, melancholy feel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hTN19x1DyM)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B_6MLse0Lc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzxmWxkXgCg
Err also lazerlife tends to be full of suggestions about this kinda ting
Lovely
Only heard Emeralds, OPN & Mount Kimbie of that so plenty to get stuck into.
new sun araw is very much in the same vein
and good. its called on patrol
I Was Thinking that as I listened to it
And can only out my initial distaste for that record down to it not being Magic Lantern!
That should say put
not out
Two great releases so far
Wish I was on the ball and picked up the 7" T-shirt deal No Pain In Pop were doing form Rattling Cage
Facebook page says
"- there will be a bunch of new FS t-shirts available early next month and
- the Rattling Cage/Hjurt tracks will be featured on a full CD version of Dagger Paths this autumn"
I need me one of those FS tees then
This has really grown on me in the last few weeks
liked it from the first time i heard it, but it really rewards repeat listens, especially on a decent sound system.
Was actually about to make a thread about Forest Swords myself.
Crazy times. Anyone know if it is still possible to pick up that mixtape they did for Gorilla Vs Bear anywhere - wasn't on the ball enough to pick it up first time round and the tracklisting looks intriguing! It used to live here:
http://www.gorillavsbear.net/2010/02/15/mp3-forest-swords-mixtape/
But yeah, am really enjoying the two releases so far. Really like Rattling Cage.
my mental sprawl in response:
Ghost Box record label sound is similar to this kind of distant murkiness. In that FACT interview last week Mike Barnes said he doesn't think there's anything nostalgic about Forest Swords sound, but it does definitely overlap with that surreal feeling a lot of Ghost Box stuff has, and the non-Ghost Box Broadcast & Focus Group album.
Julian Lynch is another Spelling Bee artist who sounds a little like Forest Swords but I find his version of ethereal hypnagogy (sorry, cannot write any more without that word!) a lot sunnier sounding, it's more open and lets more light in that Swords does - the Dagger Paths track that samples Godspeed: that's a reference that lets you know you're right in the realm of mental post-apocalyptic claustrophobia
LA Vampires & Zola Jesus share the real murky dub element. High Wolf the looseness and space - new High Wolf album Shangri L.A. is awesome - moreso, there's a High Wolf/Forest Swords Split 12" coming out pretty soon on Group Tightener records, so you'll get to hear that percussive/dub trade-off at close quarters
Peaking Lights could work for you in a similar way, if you want a really intimate physical emotional all analogue circuit bent version of a similar thing.
The Stag Hare 'Sand Paintings' cassette on Moondial earlier this year is really pretty slow ephemeral trance - maybe a bit far from the original Forest Swords sound, but it's definitely out the other side of Oneohtrix and James Ferraro, so you could get to it from there.
that kind of stuff? hope ya dig all you astral liiight travellers. sorry no youtubes or nothing, got lots of werk to do.
Sweet
Quite a bit of that is stuff I've been meaning to check but haven't gotten round to yet, will be investigating for sure...
Also, does anyone know where I might be able to buy the 7" of Rattling Cage (non ebay centric)? Had no money when it first emerged and it seems to be sold out anywhere, massive sad face.
I think here maybe....

Amazing!
That's only a few doors up from where my mum works.
*gets out phone, attempts to explain what to buy*
Found Julian Lynch recently as well
Really like it and I'm pretty keen on that LA Vamps/ZJ EP as well
..
I work with Forest Swords. Just sayin. And that EP is cracking.
Really enjoying Forest Swords
and loving the videos as well.
Great recommendations here, I'll start of with Julian Lynch I think
Demdike Stare
I forgot those before - more hauntological than anything, but I Forest Swords' sound has an element of that.
Liberation Through Hearing is some awesome astral cryptosonicology

Have you heard their Osmosis mix
Was listening to it today and it's outstanding. They're such an underated group, mostly I think because they don't sit comfortably anywhere. They seem to flirt with dubstep, hauntology and all that Ghost Box/ Trunk records stuff whilst creating their own unique vibe.
Hey Goatmeat, shameless plug but you may enjoy my podcast....
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4265655
awesome.
that's fucking (appropriately) spooky. I am just making a mix at the moment - well, refining the tracklist before I mix it - so far I have been messing round with these:
Forest Swords - Rattling Cage
Teeth - See Spaces (AIDS-3D Mix)
Actress - Maze
Ikonika - R.E.P.S.O.L. or Fish
Demdike Stare - Dusk or The Stars Are Moving
Emeralds - Does It look Like I'm Here?
Gonjasufi - She's Gone or Candylane
Hind Ear - Rain Man
Washed Out - You and I
Paralyse Humanity Sequence - Eating Cake
Which was the long harmonious way round saying - your podcast looks great! I'm all for shameless plugging.
Yeah, I have their Osmosis mix - really inspiring. That's how I find all their music, they make my imagination feel so limited the way they reconfigure all those genres into some new otherworldy contemporary-library music.
Rangers
Another good OESB band

No Pain in Pop now giving a free d/l of the 7" as it has sold out.

Link in the tweet above.
so..
I'm doing an interview with Forest Swords, anyone got a question they may like to ask, leave here thanks.
new 7 is so great.
like Sun Araw if he listened to future garage and Mala instead of taking too many drugs and using a wah pedal on everything
Good news for me
tour would be nice
With quite a cool looking t-shirt
as well
not too sure about the t-shirt
although 6 quid for a t-shirt isn't a bad price
New material sounding very promising
based on last night's excellent performance in Manchester.
Seems like more of a ghostly, two-step/garage influence is creeping into their music. One of the songs erupted into a sort of speed-garage breakdown. Some really nice vocals chopped into the mix.
Anyone heard about dates for future releases?
Also, massive kudos to them for playing after being involved in a car crash on their way to the show.
would love a new album from him this year
I persume its happening but I don't think I've heard much word about it yet.
This just reminded me that I drunkenly ordered a t-shirt from his site a while ago
Should probably check what's going on with that.
the Manchester gig was great
so glad I travelled up for it. huge respect for them getting to the gig in the end. Tim Hecker was a real experience too. Hecker could've done with being a bit louder on the whole but I suppose that's just church restrictions.
spoke to FS briefly afterwards and he said there is something due after the summer, presume he meant an album.
fuckin finally
he lost his hearing for a bit last year apparently
which I guess is why it took so long
:S
Oh dear. Well, glad he's back to it.
This blog has a great sampler of 8 amazing songs by different Olde English Spelling Bee artists
http://blog.iso50.com/18768/olde-english-spelling-bee-playlist/
Certainly helped me with some musical discoveries..
Tim Hecker needed somekind of...
Light show or visuals for me. Forest Swords were great mind you.
New interview
http://www.sevenstreets.com/music-and-listening/forest-swords-dyymond-of-durham-liverpool-interview/
he's got an album in the works, can't wait for that.
Good interview.
Seems like a very measured guy and I've a lot of respect for him taking time over his music and doing everything on his own terms. I imagine it's easy to get caught up in the hype.
Still, selfishly, I really hope he puts something out soon. Dagger Paths is one of my favourite EPs of the last decade or so.
