releases prior to Underworld ?!
Don't think I owned many decent records back then, more a case of going backwards since the advent of the internet and searching out the releases I remembered from yonks ago. This is an absolute corker (Eclipse)
I did use the mixingbowl for a while but they ban you pretty quickly if you don't keep your upload ratio high..
though I foolishly lent my 12" to someone and never got it back.
The Telegraph 2.11.92 mix is THE best dance track ever.
You should check this out, the Underworld Dub is very nice indeed.
recommend me any artists/albums that are similar to (and as good as) Underworld?
I don't listen to a lot of electronic music but Beaucoup Fish is just about the best thing ever.
Orbital are great, but more instrumental. No other band combines stream of consciousness lyrics, awesome music, electronic beats, great visuals and anthemic outros in quite the same way without coming across a bit heavy handed or plain shit.
There are other electronic acts I love lots like Vitalic, The Juan Maclean, Four Tet, Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom, etc but none of them touch Underworld at their most average, let alone best.
Will Youtube that lot. I love Orbital - never really got Leftfield or Chemical Brothers though (brightonb). OK in small doses.
Dogman go woof, Glam Bucket, Beautiful burnout, Two months off, the Riverrun EPs...
I really like 'Oblivion with bells'. More than 'Beaucoup Fish', I think?
is the only one I've not heard I think - will give it a listen ASAP.
Though it does contain a track which is a bit like The Streets. So skip that one.
Don't really sound much, if anything like Underworld, but they are awesome, particularly the album "In Dub", its round about the same time as early Underworld releases. "Thunder" "Women respond to bass" and "black eyed boy" are classics.
saying that, Soundclash is awesome as well.
Will def give a listen
Haven't heard that name for years! I had Soundclash, mainly for Probably a Robbery and Biting My Nails (tune!).
I think this CD was one of many that got nicked in a burglary in 1993 :(
Tongue is an amazing song.
"Bird 1", track one off Barking, sounds very much like "Dark & Long" but with a twist. A "Beautiful Burnout" kind of twist.
Bad news (?):
The rest of the album sounds distinctly un-Underworld. In places it sounds like the Tamperer.
Good news part deux:
It really will eat a lot of dance floors.
I had a feeling they were about to go all 'hands in the air' after the Roundhouse gig. It works when they do it for the odd song like 'Crocodile' or 'Two months off' but a whole record? Hmmm...
I might be interviewing them soon. What shall I talk to them about, eh?
dubnobass is brilliant, and sadly unmatched by anything else they (or anybody else in a similar vein) has done.
I was going through all my old dance 12's last night wondering what to keep or sell and spotted the Skyscraper 12. How great is that and the Rez 12!. Wonderful memories of that time and all that went with it. I hardly play any of them now but will always keep those early Underworld 12s and remixes, Dust/Chemical Brothers, Sabres Of Paradise label, Drum Club, Leftfield. I was 20 in 1992 with similar habits to brightonb (munching but without the penchant for hardcore). Stopped buying Underworld at Beaucoup Fish. Saw them live a few times, best time at the Astoria with the Chems when they were the Dust Brothers. Mighty fine!
Underworld mix of Drum Clubs 'Soundystem'
Mix of One Doves Why Don't You Take Me which might still sound good
I was buying a few 12" around the time, but have given most away...
Another old favourite (not Underworld):
Either the album or Dark Train version will do it for me.
I'd forgotten all about this one. God, I love going through old records after reading threads like this!
