not just pretty album covers.
i'll start with obvious ones:
My bloody valentine- loveless http://tinyurl.com/26hhcaq
Bloc party- Silent alarm http://tinyurl.com/2wtbd7s
moreso the red colour on the back
slint- spiderland, aptly named and the back cover of the spider is about right, and even the front cover conveys the mood of the album.
Also, how about The national- boxer? i thought the latest albums cover almost stopped me from listening to it as it "looked" like a departure from their other covers, and therefore you (stupidly) think it's a departure from the sound.
though I'm not sure exactly why the candle so perfectly conveys the mood of the album. But it does.
The Microphones - It Was Hot, We Stayed In The Water
Psychocandy by Jesus and Mary Chain
Either of the two Burial albums
Stankonia by Outkast
Low by David Bowie
Happy Mondays- Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches
Fugazi - Repeater
Mars Volta - Octahedron
I think the cover of their Young Liars EP is quite apt: glaring, fuzzy electronics up front with dark sonic depth.
White Denim - Workout Holiday: Colourful, piecemeal arrangements with a sense of fun.
Swans - Filth
Yo La Tengo - Painful
The Birthday Party - Mutiny / The Bad Seed
a million i haven't thought of.
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
NWA - Straight Outta Compton
Does It Look Like I'm Here?
Bat for Lashes: Fur and Gold
Best Coast: Crazy for You
jj: jj no2
Refused: The Shape of Punk to Come
Late of the Pier: Fantasy Black Channel
M83: Saturdays = Youth
Maybe Arcade Fire - Funeral
Oh and I suppose Radiohead - Kid A as well.
Te most recent Sigur Ros one as well (I'm not gona try and spell it)
Doesn't make you think of a particularly quiet album like that one is.
I think the album and the cover both feel really warm
(mind you,had to get the album out to copy that down)
I agree with this, that photo just seems so free and joyful (like the music). It has though, changed my sisters view of, 'you listen to weirdo music,' to, 'you listen to porno music,' I was quite suprised at this because to me that image doesn't have any dark or remotely sexual connotations; it seems like the most natural thing to be running naked across a main road in the middle of nowhere.
And I agree with the Radiohead one too, their artist (Stanley Donwood) has been the same for years and I think he's great - I genuinely look forward to seeing the artwork as well as listening to the music (although not quite as much).
f# a# infinity
And on another wavelength altogether, Matthew Sweet's 100% Fun.
Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - Jacksonville City Nights
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
and Burial's first album too
Midnight Organ Fight
I think album covers effect the way you interpret the music anyway, subconciously.
More often than not it's the other way around. You usually see the lovely cover before you hear the lovely music.
Monoliths & Dimensions
Ben Frost - By The Throat
His solo album from 1971 featuring Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane...
Pure hippie Californian album with an album cover to match -
Ice T - OG
Beastie Boys - pretty much all of them
well, pretty much all.
Ministry - Psalm 69 and Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste
NIN - Downward Spiral, Pretty Hate Machine
Both the Fuck Buttons albums
