"new" music you've loved this year (so far)
personally, i've been loving Mount Kimbie, Emeralds, Memoryhouse, White Hinterland and Blondes, but i feel like i've not really explored as much as previous years due to spending so much time obsessing over the past 10 years for our DiS is 10 coverage (which kicks off on monday, btw! with a dubstep week!). been massively disappointed by all the backgroundadelica/chillwave stuff blogs have been dribbling over and not heard much guitar music that's seemed very exciting.
i haven't really noticed any obvious acts lining up for "tips for 2010" or found many people in agreement about new acts (apart from lots of dis staff loving Everything Everything - not quite been bitten by that bug as yet but not given them much chance, and for ages I thought they were Remember Remember or whoever that scottish band are?!)
curious what you're all loving...and even more curious whether the lack of any exceptional new acts is gonna leave room for exceptional acts that haven't had the attention they deserve to rise through in the mainstream a little more (tis f'in great to see Blood Red Shoes all over R1, for instance)

Toro Y Moi
Im's ace
Kinda new
Guido (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QNwESNOiMg), Mount Kimbie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0N2NmSKoU9o) and Eleven Tigers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0N2NmSKoU9o) all have ace debut albums out.
I bet Ikonika, Actress and even Flying Lotus, Digital Mystikz and Scuba are new to lots of people this year. They've all made brilliant albums.
Loads of tallent just making singles and EPs too, to many to mention really.
oh kinda indie tips...
they've been thin on the ground but I've really dug: Esben and the Witch, Golau Glau (no idea where to put these peeps they are somewhere between indie and not indie they just make Golau Glau music haha), Laurel Halo (she can be pretty ace this free EP is well nice: http://nfrblog.blogspot.com/2010/08/download-laurel-halo-king-felix-ep.html), Forest Swords, Balam Acab, Zola Jesus who I've finaly caught up on, same with Former Ghosts. Trouble Books deserve a shout every year too even if thay aint that new anymore. Sun Araw are damn good but not to new either... ummm Deerhunter? haha
Been a few great new bands this year
Esben and the Witch
Veronica Falls
Teeth
Summer Camp
Wild Nothing
Best Coast
Memoryhouse
Best Coast
Forest Swords
Ikonika
Sleigh Bells
Baths
Has that Stellar OM Source come out yet?
I cant seem to find it and I love that track Geiom played in his Planet Mu mix.
Oh yeah been playing that Rangers album too, it sounds like early 80s sitcom music from an old VCR but still good. I like that he's got a bit of funk about him he kinda fits next to Onra or something but with a more washed out sound.
I'll have to keep a look out for it
pretty sure loads of bass producers listen to stuff from outside of the scene its prob one of the reasosn there is a massive melting pot of sounds in it right now.
Candy Claws
Read an interview conducted about the time of their first album where they said they were just making music like the bands they love, MBV and The Beach Boys. With the just released Hidden Lands their sound seems to have softened somewhat, with only the occasional burst of noise to herald such delights as the Pet Sounds-esque loveliness of the 'The Sunbeam Show'. Quite brilliant really, and Candy Claws just edge Memoryhouse as my own favourite new band of the year.

Grouplove
Grouplove is seriously the best guitar based indie band in the last few years. Their single "Colours" is outstanding. Saw them in NME a couple weeks back. HIGHLY recommend it.

Which instrument do you play in the band?
I wholly endorse the JAG police
Superintendent WhiteCity
Ikonika and Guido topping my personal list.
Ben Frost was a discovery around the start of the year as well. And that Brainfeeder new boy, Lorn, is fast becoming a firm favourite. Really surprised by how much I'm enjoying Forest Swords as well.
I'm a bit disappointed I haven't heard anything new/heavy/rock which has really made me sit up and listen. White Hills and Francis Harold have been the only two really, and they're not 'new' bands.
You heard that Anais Mitchell album?
If you haven't, you definitely should.
i listened to it, once. wasn't very into it.
But... it's amazing!
Theres two duff songs in 20, and the rest are solid gold.
...and its an OPERA! A good opera!
MORE EXCALAMATION MARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
James Blake, Veronica Falls, Zola Jesus, Active Child, Summer Camp, Sleigh Bells, Warpaint
So many great new acts this year
Sleigh Bells
about the only act — new or old — that have gotten me really excited this year. There've been a few 2nd/3rd albums from artists I like that have been better than expected (Radio Dept., NYPC, Autolux), but nothing that had me dribbling with praise in the way that Sleigh Bells did.
lots...
of things have been getting me exciting this year. Although Warpaint / Zola Jesus etc. are hardly new for 2010 - they'll get the credit they deserve in 2010. so I'll just list bands I've discovered this year...
Warpaint
Zola Jesus
Sleigh Bells
Mountian Man
Caitlin Rose
Summer Camp
Veronica Falls
Call The Doctor
Cults
No Joy
Still Corners
2:54
Islet
Lanterns on the Lake
and no one told me how good Dirty Projectors were until about June!
How To Dress Well and James Blake are the new artist MVP's this year.
Honorable mentions to Memoryhouse, Ikonika, Laurel Halo, Balam Acab
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
oh god, Happy Birthday is so good...
But also:
Best Coast
Caitlin Rose
Jaill
Velvet Davenport
The Young Sinclairs
Balkans
Mind Spiders
Monster Rally
Everything Everything
Fucking hell. Don't worry about it, Sean. I thought that song they released that had a line that sounded like "Who's gonna sit on your face when I'm not there?" was fun, but almost *entirely* because of that line. Then they released a song with a line "And she was looking at me like woah-oh-oh", which again was fun, but again, because of *one* line. They're appealing for the same reason Al Jankovic and Flight of the Conchords and stuff like that are, but that's it really. Not to knock what they do, but for me, it's not music to get excited about.
I started a thread a few weeks ago, asking for people to highlight great debut albums from this year, because I agree, it seems to be established acts making all the running at the moment, and as someone who most years is excited by the fresh and exciting sounds of new bands, I find that slightly odd. The only ones that come to mind are from people who are already fairly well established as members of bands - Miles Kurosky, Connan Mockasin, Big Boi - which isn't really the same.
Loads!

i think they're the best at the punk rock
If we're talking 'New' stuff...
I'll carry on plugging Zun Zun Egui, as I think they're brilliant. Been around a bit, but no album yet, just EPs, of which there is a new one in September apparently. And it's guitar based too, whilst staying far from the sort of thing I think Sean is maligning. I just find them really interesting and exciting, and yes, i 'love' their Bal La Poussiere EP. Try it all! I'm sure you can find the links to myspace and stuff...
I'm finding 2010 a pretty good year for music actually. Too much for me keep up with anyway- only just properly got to These New Puritan's 'Hidden'. Turns out it actually is brilliant, as well as ambitious and everything! More thoughts here, if you care (its comparing the Mercury shortlist to the Neptune one, and DiS is currently winning!):
