28 minutes for me
Anything over that mark by ten minutes or more is overindulgent
Ramones: 29 minutes
Pink Moon, Los Angeles, Is This It, Milo Goes To College: all under 30 mins
they're also the only albums that don't have any filler on them
They're all 29 minutes, and 28 minutes is optimal length
if only they'd counted just to 3.
Too many words in the chorus to sing
What makes a man start fires? <27 mins
First four years <25 minutes
Bangers vs fuckers <20 minutes
Reign in Blood <29 minutes
Come on Pilgrim
Out of Step <22 minutes
II (Meat Puppets) <30 minutes
From Enslavement to Obliteration <30 minutes
STRIKE IT FROM THE LIST
28 posts for me
approximately the same length as the human concentration span, allows time to mix things up with longer and shorter songs and just seems to feel right.
That was my view around 1996 so I think I'll stick with that.
1800 - 2400 seconds
I can't remember how long that is or even if I'm telling the truth.
Anyway, I can get home from work in about 45 minutes, so that. Or shorter or longer or whatever.
about 3.75" for a CD
and about the same width.
and I think if you'd like to release or listen to a 20minute album then that's a good place to release one, otherwise I do feel a teensy little bit disapointed if a newly-bought cd is less than 30mins.
9 tracks is my favourite number of tracks. Old school, feels like they've spent time on every track with no filler. If a 9-track album has more than one shit track on it, it's inexcusable.
That or 12 tracks. But I DO NOT, under any circumstances, want to deal with an 11 track album. Ugly number.
10 or 13 are ok.
But I remember many occasions when my excitement on putting a new CD into the player would be killed almost immediately when a running length of, say, 70 minutes would flash up. This seems to have been a particular problem in the late nineties, for some reason.
I'd say anything from 24-34 minutes typically feels about right to me in most cases.
But then, of course, I rarely listen to albums all the way through any more, so it hardly seems to matter now.
I think it was partly in response to people feeling like shelling out for a long CD had more 'value'.
It's the same thing happening with films now - they're all two and half hours long because people feel ripped off if they pony up £12 and they're back on the streets too soon.
90 minutes is the optimal length of time for a film.
but at least 19% of my favourite albums are over 70 minutes.
why would you want it to be all over in 24 mins? might as well just listen to an ep, surely.
I bought Elliott Smith 'XO' and Mercury Rev 'Deserter's Songs' on the same day and they were both exactly the same length. Both 44 minutes and 44 seconds. It freaked me out a bit.
Can happily go up to an hour for the right band though.
so if you lot are buying the same cds as me you must all be pretty unhappy.
if every album was the same length i'd probably stop listening to music.
I'm just going to file that away under 'silliest posts this year'
I didn't say 'how long should ALL ALBUMS be?' I said 'what do you think is the ideal length of a record?'
If you can find a more sensible thread on the internet, I'd like to see it
That seems like the way to go.
If you go over 45mins, you better have a darn good reason.
Times New Viking:
Present the Paisley Reich (CD version): 28 minutes
Rip It Off: 31 mins (at least two minutes of 'Relevant: Now' are filler)
I'm busy here.
Although Rip It Off is getting a bit baroque at 31 minutes
If you cut all 3:38 of that, you get a neat time.
22 for a hardcore band.
number of tracks can be. I don't seem to like albums with 13-14 tracks if the tracks are all similar in length, like 3-4 minutes. If it's a 14 track album, I prefer 6 minute tracks among 2 minute ones.
I like 10 track albums. Of the ones I'm thinking of, track 7, 8 or 9 usually has a very different, more relaxed mood, and then the final track is an epic, intense track, and that always works for me.
AND 59.9 SECONDS
when compiling mixtapes. Hard to do.
Or 45 mins, whichever is shorter. This is the only answer.
Inception is fucking amazing.
