mine is Beethoven's moonlight sonata.
Single best piece of music ever written.
I haven't heard Rites but Petrushka leaves me a nervous wreck. Is Rites of Spring as harsh?
Bach - Cello Suite No.1
but atm it's probably something by Arvo Part - call it the Te Deum
or maybe no 3.
which also said Bartok String Quartet #4, #3 isn't far behind - those two seem to be way out in front of the other four of his, in fact I prefer them to any of his other compositions even the piano stuff.
Also Shostakovich String Quartet #8
Nimrod (Enigma Variations)
"Quando M'en Vo'" from La Boheme
I'M NOT VERY ORIGINAL but those 3 are pretty smashing.
"Bachianas Brasileiras number 5" by Heitor Villa Lobos
"Piano Trio opus 100" by Franz Schubert
Most classical music is shit, though. Pretentious crap done by men in wigs. Blues is much better. Skip James is better than Wagner(who has some good pieces, mind)
obvious answer i know but it means a lot to personally and frankly it is just phenomenal.
Arvo Pärt's Tabula Rasa, or Fratres, especially the version for 8 cellos.
And for nostalgia, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, specifically the Adagio Sostenuto (2nd) movement.
And I don't care if it's cliche, but Mascagni's Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana is beautiful - I imagine every Italian hears it in their head when they cry.
Verdi's Requiem, Dies Irae is immense, too.
Saint Saens' Danse Macabre a close second
