How was it? Does he have a string section and brass etc.? Tell me everything.
think he had a string quartet, cant remember about any other instruments but there were a lot of people on stage, and they were wearing creepy feathery masks, and played a lot off seven swans as well as illinoise. Kinda gutted I missed him play the proper illinoise show, I read he had a human pyramid of cheerleaders
The first one was at SBE and it was the full on Illinois set with a huge band, lots of larking about with cheerleaders and was full on grandiose.
Then exactly a week later he did the Kings College gig which was just acoustic with some strings. Couldn't have really been more different. And they were wearing weird masks because it was halloween that night if I remember correctly!
I always thought it was weird the full on show was seated and the acoustic one was standing
And what was worse I had to sit next to my ex-girlfriend, having split up during the time between purchasing the tickets and the actual date of the gig. Now THAT sucked. She wouldn't back down about not going, despite the fact she'd never heard a note of his music before she met me. And the fact that she was the one who broke up with me. To get back with HER ex. GOOD TIMES!
In all seriousness though the gig was excellent. All Illinois apart from 'To Be Alone With You' if I remember correctly. Which I missed half of because I had to go for a piss. GOOD TIMES!
really wish id seen that show, I missed getting tickets at the barbican circa the avalanche so I went and watched it on the tv screens outside instead
there was maybe 2 or 3 playing brass and 1 or 2 on strings as well. nothing recorded was played.
this might give you more of an idea:
st vincent supported, pretty sure she was playing keyboards for SS too.
think it's still the best thing i've ever seen live. pretty much unbelievable. the full works instrumentally, choirs, costumes, cheerleaders, etc.
that is all
so I think The Avalanche had been released by then - but that's still Illinois-era in my view (as The Avalanche was just Illinois out-takes).
He was pretty amazing and I cried like a girl during Casimir Pulaski day. But in answer to your question - strings: yes, brass: yes, plus all sorts of other stuff (percussion, celeste, etc).
SBE and Barbican.
Touted SBE show without knowing much about him, wasn't disappointed - great show with the American prom/highschool feel
Barbican sound was superb - full brass and string orchestra, most with wings
supported by St Vincent - FACT
