The bloke thinks he's created a masterpiece - I've given it every chance and it's simply awful! Whadaya think?
Give yourself some time to grow a brain and one day you'll understand.
Best record of the year.
but it won't rate in my Top 10 or anything, because it's simply not an album I'm liable to pull out on a regular basis. I certainly like it when random songs appear on DJ mix.
But I genuinely don't think I've got in to it yet. Its the sort of thing which I'll suddenly realise is brilliant in about a year's time.
I got as far as the words "space opera", laughed, closed the window and decided it's not for me.
I don't know how those expectations could be that massively disappointed since it isn't that massively different but to be a bit more discursive about it than my first post, I think it's better for being more all-over the place and at times less of an easy listen than L.A. - I don't personally think it's a record to just smoke a spliff and sink back into it as I guess some people expected, and I think if you do do that, and when I've expected it to be an easy record I've been a bit left out by it's more complex and less 'laid-back' bits. So yeh, I like that but I can see why people would go off it, it's not always in your face or immediate in the way a lot of L.A. is, and I do think some of it can be a bit noodly.
as with lots of things, I think Chris Power's review for this site is pretty spot-on http://drownedinsound.com/releases/15325/reviews/4139725
not for me the best record of the year, or an entirely perfect one, but a very fine one that will probably visit my stereo for years to come/
and it's pretty fucking a.
ANYways...Top 25 maybe. It's fun to listen to, sure. It's just not as mind-blowing as everybody says it is. First time I heard and second and third and so on all I could think of is Prefuse 73 jamming with J Dilla (bless his soul/may he rest in peace/he changed my life).
I don't listen to Prefuse 73 too often so I don't really know what he's all about. I'm hearing more of the jazz influences, which I find quite awesome.
I like that. Might have to adopt it.
but it's in the top one
if anything. Seriously.
But srsly if every track was as awesome as 'Do the Astral Plane' I'd listen to it every day for quite some time. What a tune.
And the bass runs on Pickled are stellar, which is the song I would guess you are referring too. Different strokes man.
For me the bass runs are my favourite part and a lot of what makes it more organic then los Angeles. Instead of the record sounding programmed, it sounds like a bunch of jazz musicians jamming together ... Albeit observed by someone on a lethal mix of acid and speed.
Satelllliiiiiteee. S'about it as far as the bass-wailing songs go.
it took a few listens to click with me but it's a great album
I think it's a great album. If Botch201 doesn't like it, that's his choice.
