Fuck me, what a way to open an album. Still sounds absolutely ridiculous.
he started doing rubbish dad headbanging during the breakdown of invalid litter dept.
i found it quite sweet tbh, in a patronising the person who created you kindsa way.
Once when Idlewild's 'A Way of Letting Go' came on, my dad sort of started drumming on the steering wheel. Dads rule.
but really stiffly and out of time. I think he thinks he's Max Weinberg or that drummer who does the robot when he's drumming.
He always says, "Yeah, reckon I could've been a drummer if I'd given it a bash."
but the album as a whole is a bit.. adolescent
now i only listen to Adult Contemporary, like Kenny G
but i remember that episode of my own life where my dad played kenny g to have sex with me. Hang on a minute
yeah I know it takes 13 minutes to make its point but when Con Safo kicks in it's like WHOAAAAAAAA
I need to listen to them a bit more thoroughly - always raises a grin when they come up on shuffle
but for me TMV at their finest (parts of albums 2 and 3 IMO) are genuinely exhilarating in a way ATDI don't quite reach
I haven't listened to TMV much recently - perhaps I've grown out of them. C...VC, Tetragrammaton and Meccamputechture are still both fucking righteous
I typed 'both' then added Meccamputechture and forgot to change it
I am awful
Which basically matches Relationship of Command, In/Casino/Out and Vaya as the highpoints of Omar and Cedric's career, methinks.
i.e. Eriatarka and Cicatriz ESP, but I actually prefer TMV when they go loooong. Although not too long; Cassandra Geminni is IMO a silly contrivance. But those three tracks I name up there...they really do build to mighty, mighty peaks - their narratives are good enough to justify their pyrotechnics.
Anyway, sorry for saying nice things about silly music. Feel free to laugh at the fool.
then it goes a bit jammy
I also prefer TMV to ATDI but only because I fucking love pretentious long-winded music. That said Arc Arsenal is a fucking beast of a song and Relationship of Command is probably one of my favourite albums and never gets old, i still listen to it fairly regularly
Every time I take 32 minutes out to listen to it I realise it's time very well worth spent.
It just irritated me in the context of their massively wanky live shows at that time (about six songs in three hours at Brixton...). Cygnus Vismund Cygnus is madness, and to be honest I could probably whack it on now and go mental. I was absolutely obsessed with TMV for a while (biggest fan evarrr sorta thing), so I'm not being overly critical :)
What I love about Arcarsenal (and ATDI generally compared to TMV) is the way they concentrate all the energy that they'd take 20 minutes to unleash on a TMV track into about 3 minutes. As Alex_b said down there, it's like getting a shot of pure adrenaline, and it's such a massive rush when it kicks in.
I shall retire to the cave I crawled out of, forthwith
n.b. ATDI are WAY more consistent and have WAY fewer shite songs than TMV, I am in NO WAY gonna dispute that - but TMV gambled more on each song IMO (well, until the last two releases)
what about if you like them equally as an attempt to balance out each band's strengths and shortcomings?
reunion happening then?? : )
WARNING: this is pretty much the closest you'll get in musical terms to injecting adrenaline straight into your veins and as such is NSFW
is how I always thought of Helitrope http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCV3zQOdGHA
and I promptly got elbowed in the face 10 seconds in.
the first ATDI is really poo? Got a vague memory of them sounding horribly loose and out of tune. Relationship of Command still one of the best albums of all time.
But not without it's charm. It's really grown on me over the years.
Beware of anyone who says it's their best work though. They're suffering froma particularly bad case of I-prefer-their-earlier-work-indie-itis.
to a great album.
brilliant album, brilliant song, brilliant band. Who heard the rumors of them reforming? All bollocks im sure... but a girl can dream
over relationship of command though. There two amazingly good albums but i think In Casino Out just edges is for me!!
Transatlantic Foe is a great finisher!
#1 'Invalid Litter Dept': "Intravenously polite/It was the walkie-talkies that knocked the pimps down/As their shoes gripped the dirt floor in the silhouette of dying"
still, what a record.
From Lopsided (I think):
"The anchors kiss was scrawled in dyslexic crayon/does it all make sense now?/is this just a life preserver? Bivouac tenure?/The tropic of Cancer answers, "drink the quick sand."
"Exoskeletal junction at the railroad delayed"
"Still scalping this ticketless applause/And when they drag the lake there's nothing left at all"
There's some jewels on RoC though, yeah. My personal favourite is "This gravity is a quadroplegic horse and carriage".
but you have to know what the song is meant to be about to know what it is... erm....
That's still going on apparently, alongside all the other horrible stuff that's going down in Juarez these days, what with it being a major entry point for cocaine into the US. Pretty horrible things.
BEST ALBUM OPENER EVER.
atdi was the best band to ever walk the planet??
Seriously wheres all the heavy alt/rock bands gone?
you need to listen to them obviously.
So much so it's not even funny.
But also in two entirely different leagues.
I've never really gotten on with Pissed Jeans, always found them a bit dull...
IS IT HEAVIER THAN AIIIIIIIIIIIIR?
a very overrated record: bullshit, random-word-generator lyrics; ostentatious "singing" from Mr Up-his-own-arse Bixler; almost unrelenting, flailing, adolescent, look-at-me-I'm-an-angry-young-disaffected-man aggression; a distinct lack of real tunes and hooks (with some exceptions)...
Am I missing something?
does not necessarily equal fun. Especially when it's as po-faced as ATD-I.
All of the reasons you gave for why they're overrated is exactly why they're one of the ultimate teenage bands. They're loud, snotty, angry and incoherent which is just perfect for that time...
I'm 28 and that still sounds great to me! I'd take something with urgency and abrasiveness above any pitchfork endorsed watery fuzz pop any day of the week.
I'm still waiting on the 90s revival so I can hear some reverb again. Not that I don't like the prettier stuff of course. It's just when Grizzly Bear is the cornerstone of indie you know it's time for some serious noise again...
Man are you for real?? Theres hooks abound on that record!
It's also almost ten-years-old but sounds like it could have been released yesterday.
Mclusky do dallas > RoC
