Your albums of the year, so far... (listageddon-centric)

We're going to do a bit of a guide to the albums of the year, so far, as the year hits its halfway point next week.

Mine's topped by Deftones but haven't 'ordered' the rest but just popped my contenders in a list with a link to a playlist here: http://tumblr.com/xqdc0i967

And I see Gorilla vs Bear kicked off listing season yesterday and did theirs here: gorillavsbear.blogspot.com/2010/06/favorites-of-20105.html

So what are you top 10 or so albums of the year, so far?

View NestedLinear
  • Relevant artist taggings:
  • None
  • top10 is a bit hard...

But my top 3 should be :
    The Magic Theatre
    The Kiara Elles
    Songdog

  • Top 5 (haven't really bought that much so far this year)

    1. Beach House - Teen Dream
    2. Foals - Total Life Forever
    3. Los Campesinos - Romance is Boring
    4. Wild Nothing - Gemini
    5. Blood Red Shoes - Fire Like This

  • In no particular order...

    I'm not sure how many there is but off the top of my head I think the best have been;

    Beach House - Teen Dream
    Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
    Sleigh Bells - Treats
Los Campesinos - Romance Is Boring
    Rolo Tomassi - Cosmology
    Crystal Castles - CC II
Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me
Pantha Du Prince - Black Noise
Standard Fare - The Noyelle Beat

    Starting to really enjoy
    Delorean - Subiza
Lindstrom & Christabelle - Real Life Is No Cool
Pulled Apart By Horses - S/T

  • hmmm

probably won't end up at ten... probably not five either but still...

Land Of Kush - Monogamy (no really, listen to it, its amazing)
    Pausal - Lapses

(thats about it... music is being very dull lately...)

  • In no order.

Have One On Me by Joanna Newsom.
    Cosmology by Rolo Tomassi.
    Learning by Perfume Genius.
This Is Happening by LCD Soundystem.
A Little More Suspicion in our Fairytales Plz by Ace Bushy Striptease.
    Hadestown by Anais Mitchell.
    Romance is Boring by LC!
I Speak Because I Can by Laura Marling.
Dear God, I Hate Myself by Xiu Xiu.
    Odd Blood by Yeasayer.

Really, really excited for the new Former Ghosts record and the new Superman Revenge Squad EP/ possible album.

  • Only bought 7 albums this year (and one of those is an EP) so I'll put in a top 5.

    1. Gonjasufi - A Sufi and a Killer
    2. Surfer Blood - Astro Coast
    3. The National - High Violet
    4. Three Trapped Tigers - EP3
    5. Yeasayer - Odd Blood

The Black Keys' album, Brothers, may yet grow on me more and overtake Odd Blood.

    • I only recently got Astro Coast

OMG I put it off for too long, it's damn good and their from my home state! But, srsly, higher ranking than The National?

      • I think I'm maybe factoring in the added enjoyment that a good unexpected surprise can bring to an album

as was the case, for me, with Astro Coast. Now, I wouldn't be so dismissive or provocative as to say that High Violet is more of the same from The National, but it didn't offer too much in the way of the unexpected. A fantastic album nonetheless, but definitely not as good as either Alligator or Boxer in my opinion.
Moreover, Astro Coast is a fun album. I think there's a temptation to think more 'serious' albums, such as High Violet, hold more value in an artistic sense, so I suppose I've tried not to place too much credence in how profound (for want of a better word) an album may appear to be.

  • Not been overblown by much this year, and I fear the ones I really like are very obvious, but here goes (in no particular order):

The National - High Violet (probably my favourite so far)
Frightened Rabbit - The Winter Of Mixed Drinks
    Beach House - Teen Dream
John Grant - Queen Of Denmark
Field Music - Field Music (Measure)

Yeah, that's it. Yeasayer, Vampire Weekend, Foals are all decent, but not as good as those above.

  • Not bought much yet, cos I'm skint

    1. The Cast of Cheers - Chariot
    2. Yeasayer - Odd Blood
    3. Surfer Blood - Astro Coast
    4. The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang
    5. MGMT - Congratulations

  • Here are my top 5

    Richard Skelton - Landings [Type]
    Actress - Splazsh [Honest Jon's]
    Scuba - Triangulation [Hotflush]
Koss - Ancient Rain [Mule Musiq]
    Guido – Anidea [Punch Drunk]

Other really great albums by Trouble Books, Eleh, Rangers, Guilty Simpson, Kath Bloom and some others (basically can't be bothered to write a really long list.)

  • not in order yet

    Owen Pallett - Heartland
    Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma

Eleven Tigers - Clouds Are Mountains
Emeralds - Does It Look Like I'm Here
Konono No1 - Assume Crash Position
    Gonjasufi - A Sufi and a Killer

... but I still need to listen to all the stuff I've brought a lot more!

  • ...

    Male Bonding-Nothing Hurts

    Ryan Adams-Orion
    Spoon-Transference
    Cheap Girls-My Roaring 20's
    Paul Baribeau-Unbearable
    Free Energy-Stuck On Nothing
    Darwin Deez- S/T

    Ummm can't think of anymore

  • .

  • A shot of shoegaze

Soundpool - Mirrors in Your Eyes
    Butterfly Explosion - Lost Trails
    Serena Maneesh - Abyss etc.

I expect to dig Innerspeaker when I get around to buying it. And I like very much the Ariel Pink album, if it counts. Also, but to a lesser extent, Air Formation and Malory.

OH and a local Melbourne band TTT have a fantastic album out called Lands which is wonderfully Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Also a fan of Wild Nothing and the insanely professional debut by punk-gazers You Me Us Them.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Probs more that I can't bring to mind.

  • .

    Wild Nothing too

    Chemical Brothers - Further
The Fall - Our Future Your Clutter

    not far behind

  • Eek, listageddon indeed, 2010's been a stupidly good year for music this far

Emeralds - Does It Look Like I'm Here?
    Oneohtrix Point Never - Returnal
Konono No. 1 - Assume Crash Position
    Scuba - Triangulation
    Actress - Splazsh
Altered Natives - Tenement Yard Vol.1
Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me

Mount Kimbie - Crooks & Lovers
    Ariel Pink - Before Today
    FlyLo - Cosmogramma
    Roof Light - Kirkwood Gaps
Sam Amidon - I See The Sign

There's probably loads more as well...

  • Not that much

Probably just The National and Laura Marling. I never remember what year albums were released, so I always start to recommend 2009 albums by accident.
Islet's Celebrate This Place EP is worthy of note too though.

Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me
    CocoRosie - Gray Oceans
    Deftones - Diamond Eyes
    Foals - Total Life Forever

And the new Menomena album is absolutely fantastic, although i'm not supposed to know that yet...

  • As well as a lot of the above..

I've been really enjoying Plastic Beach recently as well as the Avi Buffalo album which I need to pick up a physical copy of.

My favourite album of the year so far though has been by a long way, The Monitor by Titus Andronicus. Seeing them play a lot of it only confirmed how good it is for me. A brilliant album made better by the fact I was really anxious about being a flop after how good the first one was.

  • Connan Mockasin - Please Turn Me Into the Snat (the best)
    Gonjasufi - A Sufi and a Killer
Miles Kurosky - The Desert of Shallow Effects
    Jamie Lidell - Compass
Lindstrom and Christabelle - Real Life Is No Cool

I've also enjoyed what I've heard of the new Women and Deer Tick albums, but haven't really listened enough yet to offer firm judgements.

  • 1. Trouble Books - Gathered Tones
    2. Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
    3. Beach House - Teen Dream

  • I'm with the "2010 = not that great" crowd

    1. Sleigh Bells — Treats (clear, standout AOTY contender)

girls in the eighties — Teenage Royalty

New Young Pony Club — The Optimist
    Nice Nice — Extra Wow

(actually, I guess that is in a particular order: alphabetical)

This thread has given me a few tips, though, so cheers!

  • great year so far

  • #1. Charlotte Gainsbourg - IRM

Can't stop myself going back to it.

It's also the best thing Beck has been involved in since Mutations.

  • >

    Liars
    To Rococo Rot
    These New Puritans
    Flying Lotus
    Lonelady

  • bit surprised at the lack of 2010 love

I've enjoyed loads of stuff so far, although most of it outwith traditional 'indie' music. In no real order (except FlyLo at #1):

    Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
    Caribou - Swim
Dillinger Escape Plan - Option Paralysis
    Deftones - Diamond Eyes
    Lorn - Nothing Else
    The National - High Violet
Errors - Come Down With Me
    Nedry - Condors
    Gonjasufi - A Sufi And A Killer
65daysofstatic - We Were Exploding Anyway

  • I'm with the camp that reckon 2010 has been a great year...

    Yellow Swans - Going Places
    Richard Skelton - Landings
Omar Khorshid - El Guitar Clark
the Ecstatict Music of El Jemaa el Fna
    The Dead C reissues

now I'm just going to give up as this list is never ending, been a pretty good year for stuff and its only going to get better.

  • The new 'Women' album

    .

  • Jogging - Minutes

The Cast Of Cheers - Chariot
And So I Watch You From Afar - The Letters EP (ok, not an album but 4 incredible and I mean INCREDIBLE tracks here.)

That's it so far. I've got the new Deftones...can't seem to get past Diamond Eyes and Rocket Skates. Needs more listening. Want that Pulled Apart By Horses record, I imagine that will sneak into my favourites.

  • Gil Scott-Heron!

    Cheers.

  • I got 4 I like enough to list...

Have One on Me - Joanna Newsom (Woah)
Warm Slime - Thee Oh Sees (Whoooooo)
Before Today - Ariel Pink (Weeeeird)
    Cosmogramma - Flying Lotus (Wow)

I'm honestly surprised that Have One On Me isn't top of more lists, tho I suspect it's a grower. In a couple of years it'll probably be easier to really HEAR it.
I'll be a bit dismayed if High Violet tops any polls at the end of the year, surely there are more than enough albums that sound like that?

  • In no particular order..

    Gaslight Anthem - American Slang
    Vampire Weekend - Contra
    Black Keys - Brothers
    Wintersleep - New Inheritors
    and ermm...
    Alkaline Trio - This Addiction

Also I'd like Dinosaur Pile Up to release that album already...

  • 1. Gonjasufi - A Sufi and a Killer
    2. Pantha Du Prince - Black Noise
    3. Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
    4. Four Tet - There is Love in You
    5. The Radio Dept. - Clinging To a Scheme
    6. Villagers - Becoming a Jackal
    7. The Redneck Manifesto - Friendship
    8. The National - High Violet
    9. Eluvium - Similes
    10. Enemies - We've Been Talking

Shitloads that are awesome but just don't quite make that list as well... Jogging, Delorean, Rolo Tomassi, Caribou, Broken Social Scene, LCD Soundsystem, Tallest Man on Earth, Local Natives, Surfer Blood, Sambassadeur, Future Islands, Guido, Liars, Foals, Janelle Monae, Jonsi, High Places, Errors, Vampire Weekend, Shearwater... fucking shitloads.

  • Top 3

Janelle Monae - The Arch Android
John Grant - Queen of Denmark
    Beach House - Teen Dream

Then a load of others I can't put into order:

    Shearwater - The Golden Archipelago
    Owen Pallett - Heartland
    Jonsi - Go
    The National - High Violet
Delays - Star Tiger Star Ariel
Jeremy Messersmith - The Reluctant Graveyard
Olafur Arnalds - ...and they have escaped the weight of darkness
These New Puritans - Hidden (a shame there's only a few really standout tracks, though)
The Radio Dept. - Clinging to a Scheme

  • In no particular order, thus far

Big Boi - Sir Luscious Leftfoot - The Son of Chico Dusty
Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Pt 2: Return of The Ankh
    Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
    Oneohtrix Point Never - Returnal
    Rangda - False Flag
    White Hills - S/T
    Wooden Shjips - Vol. 2
Francis Harold & The Holograms - Who Said These Were Happy Times

Haven't heard Harvey Milk or Melvins yet and fully expecting those to nudge into that...when I get some money, y'know. New Emeralds hasn't really clicked yet, and I need to get my hands on some more of those Madlib Medicine Show records: 2 & 3 aren't quite end of year list material to my ears, but the new one sounds like it really could be. Oh and that Guido record really is superb and could well be up there.

Haven't heard much noise this year either, so that could well change the list a bit if I get round to buying some...

  • List

Clubroot – s/t (II - MMX) [Lo Dubs]

and the Parson Sound 3lp is the best reissue and thing overall. So heavy.

Soon I will get the Conan cd which promises to be very good also

  • For me, this year's theme so far is...

bands I already like releasing pleasant-enough but ultimately disappointing albums. I'm sure some of them will grow on me as the year goes, but my list of clear-cut faves is rather short for now.

    1. Los Campesinos! - Romance is Boring

  • I'm loving

    Perfume Genius

    Field Music
    Villagers
    Silver Mount Zion

Off the top of my head. I think its been a great year so far.

  • Hope 2nd half of '10 is better

    Distinct lack of 'great'ness.

    Beach House
    Janelle Monae
    The National

are the only ones that come close for me. Flying Lotus will sneak in there eventually but it may take me at least a year to get my head around the fukkah; it hurts. Have also enjoyed Broken Bells, Broken Social Scene, Dark Dark Dark and Stornoway.

  • I forgot 65 Days thats in mine too

Hidden has faded somewhat for me since my original excitement about it, also forgot Nedry htats a fucking top album that.

  • Loving 2010 too.

Great and very distinctive, original albums.
I've not listened though to half of what came out this year yet. That's the drawback, plethora of artists and bands you can never catch up with!
