Such a great album, such a great mix of music styles.Think this might be my new favorite album.
top 10 (personal list of best albums ever) material.
Don't know why i never got this album untill recently,it's mind blowing, it's a similar album to "Mule Variations" but i think it is better.
Incredible, astonishing album. I've been delving my way slowly through Waits' back catalogue for the last few years and still haven't got anywhere near through the whole thing, but the triptych of Swordfishtrombones (which I think might even just eclipse RD for me) > Rain Dogs > Frank's Wild Years is one of my favourite sets of records of all time. Up there with Evol > Sister > Daydream Nation.
We could just turn this into a general Waits love-in thread, and I'd like to throw Nighthawks At The Diner out there as being a massively underrated gem in his history.
But yeah, Rain Dogs - Cemetery Polka, Hang Down Your Head, Jockey Full of Bourbon, Tango Til They're Sore... What an incredible collection of music.
Fave album eva. Totes Bare Amazing.
Swordfishtrombones always seems to get more love than Rain Dogs but personally i prefer Rain Dogs.
Amazing start to an album
surely must go to Closing Time. And Small Change and Alice. The Early Years, Volumes 1 & 2 is also amazing. I love Tom Waits. His voice makes my ovaries ache.
With regard to Closing Time and Alice, oh and the Early Years. And the ovaries aching bit.
it's good alright. sometimes I feel like it doesn't quite hang together as an album as well as it could... kinda like there's too many different styles and moods...
but I love how it sounds like a career-spanning Greatest Hits set even though it's just one amongst many. AMAZING.
was where I started, so possibly only for sentimental reasons I like it more. But Rain Dogs and that = ace.
Have you seen Down by Law? Raindogs era Tom Waits acting (very damn well) + a couple of the songs off it sounding flippin ACE in the soundtrack.
Is my favourite Waits song, along with 'Shore Leave' and 'Swordfishtrombones'. Lovin' the marimbas on that record.
Or maybe it's "All the Right Bullets"... Or "Shiny Things"... I should listen again, it's been awhile.
For some reason the 80's Matchbox solo on Psychosis Safari reminds me of this, bit more rawk obviously but still.
Love it...especially the lyrics! :)
I may prefer blue valentine but if that is the case then its probably more to do with the fact that it was blue valentine that got me into waits in the first place but yeah rain dogs is incredible.
Saw him play edinburgh a couple of years back and i was over the fucking moon when he played cemetery polka :)
