Benga feat Katy B - Katy on a mission
tune of the summer? when's it out?
Benga is really hit and miss for me but I'm a sucker for Katy B's voice. I think the instro is out or has been around for ages. This track she did with Geeneus is brilliant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCqFP0dTFSQ As I... Those two gave away their version of Good Life as well: http://rinse.fm/index.php/music/roskakatyb_giveaways
man on a mission has been around for ages it seems, but hasn't ever come out. Benga hasn't been releasing very much of late apart from the recent double pack. He's been signed to a major as part of Magnetic Man with Skream and Artwork and they're making an album and touring loads as well as DJing on there own, he'll prob be playing this everywhere. I dunno if a release will happen, it might. But keep an eye on Rinse: http://rinse.fm/ because they sometimes just give stuff like this away cos Katy B and Benga are pretty connected with the place.
forgot that was Katy B too.
One of my fave funky vocals... still!
This track is more like an electro house dubstep thing Katy B makes it come alive though the instro isn't to hot on its own. Its got a Rolex Sweep kinda vibe to it but with soulful vocals.
the vocal really makes this track
when I was working late and heard it on Rinse. Really hope it gets released.
her vocals on this track are really great. Excellent soul/r&b skillz but with an unmistakeable british twang and awesome control - not a hint of oversinging
with lots of diffrent producers on it so maybe its gonna be on that. Dunno how long that message has been up on there though: http://www.myspace.com/katyblondon / http://www.katybmusic.com/
This tune is so gooooood: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI4JEG86Zsw
Its got a propper vid and everything.
this tune is going to go SO overground
Katy B for the Mercury Award
put a pony on it
I think Rinse are releasing it and they're not to big right now. I've not heard it on anything but Rinse yet either This will prob get a biiiiiiiig push instead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2vWQFHP3D0 cos its on a major and already on Radio One quite a bit... Tiesto-Step
She deserves some props though she's a brilliant singer so I hope she gets some good stuff going for her.
Not suprising I guess since Magnetic Man is Skream, Benga and Artwork
and then Tong, Annie Mac, Mary Anne Hobbs et al are going to be playing it to death at the end of the Summer
it's gonna be big
I heard her on the radio from glasto and she played: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xxe7v4Yfcxs and all the pop kids and Tiesto-Blog_House_step crew where loving it and it made me smile cos Donaeo is a right laugh and needs more props, so does Katie B... and I even heard her play Zomby on her lame blog-house-shite-electro-fest radio one show. Shes some sort of gate keeper to the masses to some really really good stuff, so I'm torn about her, shes either brilliant or well annoying or both. Big up Annie Mac!
I heard Party Hard at least 20 zillion times at St. Paul's Carnival last weekend.
Which reminds me, does anyone know what that kind of ubiquitous semi-uk funky track is that isn't The Funky Anthem, Party Hard, Are You Gonna Bang Doe or the one about touching your toes... it's just like an riding up the scale thing, and it's annoying me that I can't remember what it is...
I never hear Donaeo outside of Rinse, I've not even heard him ON Rinse for AGES until I heard him on Annie Mac. So I dunno how big he is really.
There is too much semi-funky-afrojack-major-lazor-shite about I dunno if I could tell it appart really. I went to a random electro night not long ago, just passing thru for some reason and it was all funky rip offs... it read like blog-house got bored of 4x4 but not the shit synths. There is only so much you can do by just adding funky drums, you kinda need to funk the rest up too... which is why funky works and semi-electro-afrojack-major-lazer-shite doesn't.
I was thinking it was a joke for a while haha
Seriously, along with Footcrab and Tron it was the unofficial Bloc anthem. Played by Roska b2b Scratcha, N-Type (I ran quicksharp), Kode9 b2b Martyn, MJ Cole and at least one other DJ as well.
I bet shite pop clubs play it.
no idea how tho, It should really be a one week anthem before it gets annoying and makes your brain itch. But it keeps coming back all over the place. I wouldn't hate on it so much if I wasn;t so bored of it, I mean it was ok for a week or two, kinda fun the first few times you heard it in a club. But any more is just silly haha.
Shit happanes I gues, really didn't expect 9 to drop it though I've not heard him enjoy much new music let alone Pon De Floor hahha propper spun me sideways haha.
How did I forget that! Haven't heard it for ages I guess. Kinda wish you hadn't reminded me, tbh. Anyway, yeh, it's rubbish. St. Pauls carnival peeps should get back to playing old dancehall records at ridiculously loud volumes.
(in reponse to jimi's thoughts about Annie Mac)
"Most likely to: Make you think, "Wow", as in, "Wow, that's not as mind-blowing as I was expecting"."
He reckons they've not released anything though. I distinctly remember a certain white label Mag Man twelve coming out last year, unless I'm VERY much mistaken. I wasn't overly enamoured with their live show at FWD/Rinse last year, but who knows, I think they've earned their right to make whatever they want really.
I know it's well pompous but I'm pretty scared of people jumping on the dubstep bandwagon. Not that it hasn't already happened but the scene's still so vibey and welcoming (for the most part, Matter's FWD/Rinse raves were a step too far imho though the people putting them on were sound), I'd be horrified if it turned into a dodgy facsimile of d'n'b, all aggy kids and no (or very little) soul.
that really electro as in old skool electo 12" from Magnetic Man last year with the vocoder vocal hooks and that, it was alright yeah...
To be honest I think the main dubstep scene is to far gone to worry about, its already into the too aggy, too much of a cartoon of what dance music is to worry about. Its shite. Its at that stage where its going to be big and going to take over clubs for ages with brash sounds that cool kids and pop peeps listen to and old gimps at the guardian have to talk about to get a check at the end of the week.
Its just about the fringes since its gone over the edge. Its just a good thing that the fringes are so diverse and so much fun right now, any backlash thats coming from the proliferation from the shite in the middle isn't gonna matter to much at this point. Cos the heads that know are living it and the people that are open to it are going to find it. The rest are just riding the hype and wern;t bothered anyway.
Bless Burial for confusing the masses about what dubstep should be, when they get nowt but noise and Tiesto-Noise-Core-Wobble-Step from Annie Mac now haha.
The fringes are great but they're merging with loadsa house sounds and the like - I'd love just once to go back to a 2007 FWD rave, just for the difference in sonics. Eyesdown kinda thing.
Not that I'm complaining at all, loving loads of the new stuff as well, just going all prang about being misrepresented a la P4k.
but only from one end, I mean you hardly ever hear the house heads playing the stuff the scene is producing. So its kinda vibing off house but not really connecting apart from on the odd occasion when people like Martyn get booked at Fabric or Shackleton gets love. Or Villalobos plays some Ramadanman or the odd UK Funky track. Or someone like Shed that is picking up on it along with Redshape or something. You talk to the average house head they don't have a clue. Its got to the sad state of affairs where more blog house hipsters know about uk house than the big house/techno guys. Cos they've all got stuck in a rut somewhere. I mean its a rut that they might work them selves out of but right now most big house/techno guys aint on it by a lonnng way.
but I Need Air is a little bit rubbish, right?
Also I'm kind of relying on Paul Lester quotations to get people to come to my first ever gig next month (Trouble Books hopefully) so I wince every time he makes a tit of himself.
but they keep doing strange stuff and really obvious ravy wobbly stuff under Magnetic Man too. Its kinda strange. I mean if they make waves in pop circles its gonna be a weired one. Cos one minuet they're gonna drop a big pop cheese anthem and the next a lfo wobble over a beat and in their sets they play other peoples stuff too so you're prob gonna hear whatever big dubstep tune is about get played too. They're the next prodigy haha
But want I really wana know is... Is Artwork still gonna make beasts like Red on the side? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5kz4JECAxQ Cos I've not heard from him in ages untill this all popped up. and I'd love to hear if he's been at it.
Heard this on Rinse a couple of weeks ago and listened to it on Youtube about thirty times in a row. Such a banger.
wasn't expecting top 5 nice one! Pretty sure everyone in the scene was so bummed that As I didn't even get a nod that they gave up hope of owt else doing it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRCV9ktiBOk
Nice to see James Blake get a shout in the recent Guardian article too haha
'You're a Brit school and Goldsmiths alumnus, what do you think of the talent coming out of those camps at the moment?
I was never under too much pressure, even though they've produced famous artists. I mean, people are still writing about Damon Albarn, but the new stuff is just as exciting. I love James Blake, he's really cool, he was in my class. I'm also into bands such as Embers.'
benga, i'm not a fan of. the much hyped magnetic man show isn't very good either.
