Girls - Laura

beautiful_balloon [Edit] [Delete] 6 replies 18:20, 8 June '10

I really like the Girls album and this song is a particular favourite - so I was slightly taken aback when listening to it earlier and my friend said 'Is this the Kooks or something?'

I was like 'no, of course not' but then thought, oh hang on, it does actually sound EXACTLY like it could be a Kooks song.

The slightly strangulated intonation of his voice when he says 'reach out, touch me I'm right here', the simple acoustic strums, the gentle 7th chord changes, the generally MOR lyrics 'I know I've made mistakes, but I'm asking you to give me a break....'

then it struck me if it was a Kooks song I either a) wouldn't listen to it or b) secretly listen to it as a guilty plesure

So, yeah, indie snobbery eh?

  • I actually enjoy a few Kooks songs

I like Girls, too. Not so much 'Laura', though, interestingly.

Anyway, a catchy song is a catchy song, in my eyes.

  • my name's the title

and none of my namesake songs are any good (bar "Tell Laura I Love Her obviously) so i love it anyway. I am sure Girls just have that certain something that the Kooks don't - not including talent.
