One trick pony?

I'm starting to doubt it's a good thing when you can pick out a member of a band by sound alone. I'm listening to some Godflesh to try and prove myself wrong though.

Can't bring myself to listen to anymore Greymachine or Jesu though.

  • I got bored of Jesu very very quickly.

I still listen to Godflesh all the time, and Final and Techno Animal fairly frequently. I think there's a pretty good progression in the Godflesh back catalogue (compare first EP with love and hate in dub, f'instance).

    • Forgot about Techno Animal and Curse of the Golden Vampire

      who I do quite like.

Just tried listening to 'Selfless' by Godflesh though which is their first album I got and seems like the closet link to Jesu out of what i've heard by them. Spotify has loads though and am quite enjoying 'Streetcleaner'

So yeah...proved wrong already and maybe it's just his stuff from the last few years which sounds exactly the same.

      • check out pure if you haven't heard it already.

one of my favourite albums of all time.

        • Giving it a spin.

Really don't like the first track.

          less_than_zero @thewarn | 27 May '10, 14:39 | X
          • yeah, that one's a 'grower'.

If you don't like the second, you're probably not gonna like any of it.

  • I got bored of Jesu swiftly as well

His remixes of Isis are delightful though, especially this badboy.

    • Primavera?

      • ahhh of course,

blanked that out my mind. therefore if he's at primavera he's probably being pissed on by members of the crowd.

        M-I-E @less_than_zero | 27 May '10, 15:29 | X
  • Yup

I'm very fond of Jesu's first couple of records but I am now tending to think they only have one song. Good song mind, but variety kings they are not.

  • funny; last night i sort of rediscovered him

i think some Jesu can just feel like banging yr head (Infinity, Opiate Sun i'm looking at you...)

but the ones that aren't that singular (mainly Silver, Sun Down/Rise, Lifeline and S/T) are still truely amazing.
i remember seeing him live with Mono about 3 years ago and just thinking "holy fuck that's heavy" and yet not having any urge to over do any of the metally bits and instead focus on that amazing balance between the weight and the melody of it.

should check this out. it's really interesting to hear him talk so fluently about himself...

  • Totally not a one trick pony

He's a living legend. The variety of the stuff is huge - compare Final to Streetcleaner; even within projects there's huge variety (compare first Curse of Golden Vampire Album to second; the evolution of Techno Animal from Ghosts through Re-Entry to Brotherhood of the Bomb; the difference between the two Ice albums; the God albums - acknowledging they weren't all his own work obviously; then how Jesu has evolved from Pale Sketches to Opiate Sun). In fairness I'd say I prefer Godflesh to Jesu but understand he can't carry on doing all that angsty stuff forever without looking a bit of a dick (reformations notwithstanding. Best Godlfesh for me is the first one and really robotic mechanical stuff like Cold World and Merciless. And Pure and Streetcleaner and...

And Grey Machine is pretty good overall especially in contrast to the increasingly shoegazey jesu stuff. The J2 thing wasn't great but had some interesting things going on and Blood of Heroes is next to be bought.

And when they get over the myriad technical hitches they always suffer from, Jesu are great live.

So when's the Godlfesh London date then?

    Stuzza | 27 May '10, 15:12 | X
    • Well, differences with Curse of the Golden Vampire are probably down to Alec Empire being involved in the first but not second album.

I reckon the bands change but he does the same thing regardless. I obviously haven't heard as much as you mind. The Ice album i've heard was pants though.

      less_than_zero @Stuzza | 27 May '10, 15:29 | X
  • Going from grindcore to industrial metal to shoe-gaze/post-rock

via side projects involved with ambient, industrial dub, hip-hop and drum and bass makes you a one trick pony? Some Jesu sounds a bit like some Godflesh, admittedly, and Jesu is a bit hit and miss (though wonderful when it falls together) but they're still entirely distinct projects.

    ContentToPlayVillain | 27 May '10, 15:27 | X
    • I've already admitted I forgot a couple of projects...

But he is the Timbaland of Metal. A very distinct sound which i'm now bored of.

      less_than_zero @ContentToPlayVillain | 27 May '10, 15:36 | X
      • I will begrudgingly accept similarities between Godflesh and Jesu

along the lines you mean, and given that Jesu is his main focus in terms of touring, me continuing to wank on about side projects (like I forgot Krackhead, which is just really very very fast drum and bass so utterly unlike anything else, except Zonal which is similar - see I'm off again). But ContentToPlayVillian sums it up in terms of the scope of what he does do or has done.

        Stuzza @less_than_zero | 27 May '10, 15:49 | X
        • oops I missed a bit of a sentence there

          Stuzza @Stuzza | 27 May '10, 15:51 | X
  • if you're not bored with him yet

You can check out Final at the Incubate festival in Tilburg, 12-19 september http://incubate.org

  • I've only ever really heard Jesu

I liked it, but I couldn't be bothered to keep up with the releases... after Silver, my general response was something along the lines of "...oh he's still at it?"

Should probably listen to some Godflesh though

    prunes | 27 May '10, 18:20 | X
  • I just don't understand how people can't see the similarities with Jesu and Greymachine.

Don't have to even go a minute into the first track of the album before you realise it's him.

Someone has got to agree with me. Listen to the start of 'Friends Are Evil' by Jesu and then the start of 'Sweatshop' by Greymachine.

    less_than_zero @13Monsters | 27 May '10, 18:51 | X
    • But how much of that is him?

He's doing the same thing, the only difference is the input of the others. He might want to pursue other things but he himself is stuck in a rut and needs to collaborate just to make it sound a bit different.
Whenever someone says his name i'm only going to think repetitive crunching guitars and horrible effects riddled vocals.

I never had too much of an opinion on him before today but am talking myself into disliking him more and more.
