Apparently 'High Violet' is at 2 and 'Total Life Forever' is at 4.
Big week for indie-rock / 'our world'
Foals #9, The National #14
AMAZING for The National to be that high in the midweeks! Foals I'd have expected - Antidotes charted at #3 I believe and they're generally a more popular crossover indie for the mainstream band.
But I guess Fleet Foxes' debut hit high, and then climbed higher in early 2009, and both AnCo & Grizzly Bear charted pretty well last year. I guess when on-the-cusp bands from 'our world' really hit their critical stride, the deluge of 5 stars and 9/10s tip them over the edge. Shows that reviews are still very much important in this day and age. And when The Futureheads can't crack the top 40 albums in the midweeks and The National are going in SECOND PLACE, well, wow. Wow wow wow.
I fully expect Is This Happening to get a top 10 slot too (top 15 at least).
The press from all quarters have been wetting themselves over The National.
The Times gave them a kicking (admittedly someone else gave it 5/5 in the same paper a day later) Observer: "glimmers of anything more distinctive are usually soon extinguished". The Independent reckoned it sounded like Jesus & Mary Chain. I know these are the sort of outlets that are going to go "blogs like that band? Pooee, they smell!" but they count as much as your monthly magazines.
ON BALANCE the reviews have been really strong; pretty much the equal of veckatimest thus far.
Their release is an EP though, isn't it? Is it eligible for the album chart?
Skins and that innit
its got so many catchy potential singles on it without alienating the core fan base.
