Has to be one of the most underrated lyricists. Especially his early stuff...
'Battered Old Bird' is a favourite, lyrically, but there are many.
He makes an appearance in it towards the end although I must admit i'm unfamiliar with all but a few of his songs. Any reccommendations?
and you can't go wrong. My favourites would be This Year's Model, Armed Forces and Imperial Bedroom but I'm sure others would disagree. Of his later albums, I really like Blood and Chocolate.
there's an album of country covers (Almost Blue) he released during those first six albums, I'd avoid that unless you become a Costello completist.
He usually gets a mention in best lyricist debates doesn't he? Anyway, definitely one of my favourite lyricist (probably *the* favourite). Musically, he can be pretty interesting as well, a lot of his songs shun standard song structure/chord progressions.
and one of them was a transcript of the 2 chatting about music and such. Seems like an interesting guy, i'll check out a few of his earlier efforts.
Watching the Detectives is like a whole Raymond Chandler/Dashielle Hamett book wrapped in a 3 minute pop song. So I dunno about underrated...but the man was so prolific it became hard to keep up with him...and then he went all Burt Bacharach on us and I lost interest. Still, the man's a legend.
and the lyrics are incredible. i urge everyone to try and find it.
is the moment that Costello went from being a great pub rock artist to being SOMETHING ELSE, especially lyrically. It's his 'heaven knows i'm miserable now' moment.
History repeats the old conceits
The glib replies the same defeats
Keep your finger on important issues
With crocodile tears and a pocketful of tissues
I'm just an oily slick
In a windup world with a nervous tick
In a very fashionable hovel
I hang around dying to be tortured
You'll never be alone in the bone orchard
This battle with the bottle is nothing so novel
So in this almost empty gin palace
Through a two-way looking glass
You see your Alice
You know she has no sins
For all your jealousy
In a sense she still smiles very sweetly
Charged with insults and flattery
Her body moves with malice
Do you have to be so cruel to be callous
And now you find you fit this identikit completely
You say you have no secrets
then leave discreetly
I might make it California's fault
Be locked in Geneva's deepest vault
Just like the canals of Mars or the Great Barrier Reef
I come to you beyond belief
My hands were clammy and cunning
She's been suitably stunning
But I know there's not a hope in Hades
All the laddies cat call and wolf whistle
So-called gentlemen and ladies
Dog fight like rose and thistle
I've got a feeling
I'm going to get a lot of grief
Once this seemed so appealing
Now I am beyond belief
