Always fancied getting into them, so where should I start?
I hope that's okay. To anyone who knows, what's earlier - like 80s - Yo La Tengo like? I heard it was rockier - is this true?!?1?1!
I say they're one of my favourite bands, but then I've never actually listened to an album pre-Painful. I feel something of a fraud.
but probably has less of the mellow stuff they did later. The album immediately before Painful (May I Sing With Me) is excellent, like a dry-run for Painful. Fakebook's good, but the other three (Ride the Tiger/New Wave Hotdogs/President YLT), while pleasant, are nothing particularly special.
It basically just took them a while to find their voice and start sounding like Yo La Tengo - the early albums are fairly generic 80s indie pop/rock.
I've heard that - bloody love it. It's maybe their most accessible album but I'd never recommend it as a starting point as it's something of a one off.
and Painful are my favourites. And I'm BRILLIANT at liking good music.
It's really atmospheric, and hangs together as an album really well and is wicked.
But I'd say I Can Hear The Heart Beating as One is the most accessible and has them doing quite a lot of different styles.
One thing about them is they don't seem to put their catchiest tracks at the beginnings of albums so... watch out for that.
I would say it's pretty hard to choose between Painful, I Can hear the Heart Beating as One and And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out.
Cos you should really download 'em all. I mean, am I right or am I right?!!
Or spare your conscience: buy Electr-O-Pura and steal the rest. *cough*
of the 3 i have nothing turned itself inside out is the best. great late night album
But I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One is possibly there best place to start as it covers so much ground. I've been listening to Electr-o-Pura a lot recently, I think it contains some of their best songs.
