Seriously incredible. This is pretty much the best hip hop record I've heard in yonks.
Can't remember who initially recommended it - i think it was in that "Hip Hop Will Never Die" thread which contained a fuck load of amazing records that i'm still exploring.
I definitely don't see that...
you coulda chosen.
Maybe the worst song on the album, and definitely nothing like the rest of the album. Hes just telling the story of some suicide attempts on that track, not glorifying it.
Is that the only song you've heard?
Try listening to something like 'Stars' or 'Life as a Shorty'... or actually, any of the other songs on the album.
That's just a scam to lure the indie kids (tm) in.
but the mixtape he did after, Grizzly City, is fucking awful.
I'm telling you all again, listen to ScienZe. Seems to be ridiculously overlooked, but his mixtapes (An Ode To Dilla and The Phone Tap(e)) are unbelievable. Second only to Jay Electronica (get the fuck on to him if udunkno) as the best MC I've heard for years.
I DL'd ScienZe last weekend, will give it an ear soon.
Any good recent releases? I've not looked for a couple of months...
and I'm off to see him tomorrow. Dead excited.
Stones Throw: You should have Guilty Simpson's album, its great and is still growing on me. I am about 3 months behind on Madlib's releases but will catch up soon. I think its almost too much to decipher at the moment, I will be getting to know those better for years to come. The Whitefiled Brothers lp is pretty cool, been enjoying that.
If you like Aloe Blacc and/or soul in general, you should have Bilal's new album Airtights Revenge.
And I've heard the odd tune with Bilal on, but not the album. Shall download later. Fanks.
Ugh, that question's cringeworthy. But they've just released a box of 10x 45s that I'm sure a lot of nerds will go mental over.
Personally, I think I've got all of it anyway in CD form, and I'd rather spend my rather-limited money on stuff I've not heard. But a heads up nonetheless.
But that does look amazing. All need and tidy and lovely. Not sure I can justify it, like you I think I have a lot of it in digital form.
was that I didn't start with vinyl.
But then, they certainly look better than jewel cases, and it IS pretty cool to have larger versions of decent artwork...
when it was popular in the 90's NOT to keep the jewel cases and just save the artwork and cram the disc into one of those binders with ALL your other cd's, I did that. :((( It pisses me off so bad, sooooo bad.
its that the discs are scratched beyond belief. Whoever thought that would be a good idea?!
http://scienze.bandcamp.com/ - Free downloads of the above mixtapes.
but all I remember is that the Newsom track was bloody awful. Might give him another listen at some point. But not now.
the original is lovely.
I prefer the original. But Exile flipped it real nice-like.
and talk about Dessa's "A Badly Broken Code". I was gonna start a thread about it, but this'll do. I know I've not heard all that much from this year yet (and this has been out since about January, so may have been done to death?) but I'm really, really liking it. Sounds like Ani diFranco goes hip hop. Thoughts/ similar recommendations?
I remember giving it a sample listen when it came out. I enjoyed it but forgot about it and haven't searched it out since. Might have to do so.
'til I heard her performance on KEXP: http://kexp.org/live/liveperformance.aspx?rID=31021
The album lives up to the performance.
