Am I right in thibking that The Cold Vein would be a good place to start?
I discovered these guys yesterday!! Have fallen headlong into an art-rap tip. Anyway, as The Cold Vein's their only album I'd totally start there. Start with the opening track. It's INCREDIBLE
then listen to Dalek
Which is why its taken me a good 3 years to move onto these!
It's full of stars
It's incredible. One of the best rap albums of the past ten years. Might actually be THE best.
Was just browsing on amazon and saw a couple, looks like i'll be getting The Cold Vein then!
already said that
oh and there's an album of just the instrumentals but i think thats credited just to El-P.
but yeah, get this and dig into the Def Jux catalogue (most of it is on spotify) and then feel sad that the label may be dead.
Cage, Cannibal Ox and El-P would be my highlights though. And Aesop Rock when I'm in the mood. His last album is great.
I'm not that fammiluar with them to be honest, but I think you'll dig it if you dig that. Free DL:
Vex'd ft Jest - Disposition
Love the eerie sounding hums in the background
One of the only dubstep tracks I've heard where an American rapper sounds good on it. Vex'd are a bit good at the dark stuff, pitty they've gone their seperate ways now.
El-P (the producer of Can Ox) has a great solo career as well, two albums that are must-haves IMO:
a) Fantastic Damage
My favorite track off it, Deepspace 9mm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNJFq6VjHJI
b) I'll Sleep When You Are Dead
Check this track, Tasmanian Pain Coaster: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9b-ibeakUA
And last, scratch that, first, get the album Funcrusher Plus by Company Flow, its another one of El-p's groups, he handles production and raps as well, unlike Can Ox. Personally I almost prefer Funcrusher Plus to The Cold Vein, but its damn close.
The Cold Vein/Fantastic Damage/Funcrusher Plus are three of my favourite albums, easily my favourite strand of hip-hop - El-P is a goddamn genius. Labor Days by Aesop Rock is a must as well.
But only by a hair.
