London record shopping - where to go?

russelrw [Edit] [Delete] 19 replies 14:06, 1 April '10

Hi everyone,

I think something like this has already been asked before but ah well...

I'm gonna be in London for a few days before I run the marathon on the 25th April as I need to pick up my number etc etc.

I was thinking I'd use some of my dead time before race day to go pick up some vinyl and recent releases. I'm obsessed with electronic music at the moment but I'm usually an alt.Rock/heavy rock kinda guy.

I'm never in London so this is quite exciting :) There are literally no record stores near me.

I like the idea of just grabbing a load of records, chilling in a store somewhere listening to them (preferably vinyl), having a coffee and eventually buying a few. Is there somewhere like this in London?

I hope so!

Taking all recomendations :)

Thanks in advance

  • This:

Second Layer - best for weird/noise/experimental/jazz
Flashback (2 locations) - best for second hand
Rough Trade East & West - best for indie/alternative in the broadest sense
Phonica - best for electronic stuff
Sister Ray - best for back catalogue
Pure Groove - best for instores

    • And then Sister Ray went bust

and it reopened as Sister Ray.

(one of the co-founders bought it back from the administrators)

There's a massive on on Oxford Street. It's got T Shirts and posters too.

        • a few doors? HA!

HMV on the east side of Oxford street has quite a good selection of metal. For more extreme weird stuff though I'd say rough trade east and for stoner/doom I'd say sister ray :)

          • i just came back from Honest Jons and Rough Trade West

out on the Portobello Road. very impressed by both of them, Rough Trade especially caught me of guard with a much better selection than the East shop, they even had a sale with good stuff in it. Honest Jons was just full of different stuff and was nice and cheap as well.

          • Brilliant! A million thanks.

I will refer back to this message when I go.

Are there places I can sit down and actually listen to a record from off the shelf? I love that idea.

            Thanks :)

            • i say

Sister Ray & Rough Trade were the two that were goodly enough to take my label's Nosferatu D2 & Benjamin Shaw records, but there's heaps of good stuff there.

I recommend going to Sister Ray and then just keeping an eye open, as there's another couple of really nice second hand ones very nearby (one on the same road, and one around the corner).
